| Zinder Travel Guide Edit This The best resource for sights, hotels, restaurants, bars, what to do and see photo Zinder was founded in the beginning of the 17-th century by Hausa tradesmen from Kano. In the 19-th century the city reached its peak. Situated on the trading route from Kano to Agadez , the city was a big trading center of the Hausa empire. When the French arrived, Zinder was their administrative center until 1926, when the capital was moved to Niamey . Zinder still is the second largest city of the country and has the best market of Niger - it is a very nice place to spend a few days. Highlights of the the city include the Birnin Quarter, the Zengou Quarter - where you can find some od the best examples of Hausa architecture anywhere in the world - the Grande Mosquee and the Sultan's Palace. With a bit of luck you can arrange a visit to the Sultan and even admire his Rolls Royce - the only one in Niger - or any of the other seven cars he owns. |

| A nice place to relax in town is the Centre Cultural Franco-Nigerien (CCFN).
Even if you don't speak French you can still enjoy the newly opened art
gallery and the garden cafe. If you do speak French you can find lots of
interesting reading in the spacious library. Zinder is a good stop on the way to or from Nigeria, the main road leads you directly to Kano (the nicest city in Nigeria). The road to Agadez is not completely finished. See the Getting There section for more details. _________Sights Edit This x [Add Sight] Grande Mosquee Edit This The Grande Mosquee is a good starting point to explore the Birnin quarter. The building probably dates from the 19-th century. type: general World66 rating: [rate it] Sultan's Palace Edit This x The Sultan's Palace dates from the 19-th century and is still very much in use. People from town and neighbouring villages come here to ask (legally binding) advice on marrigae, inheritance etc. If you are in need for advice yourself, it is possible to arrange an appointment with the Sultan through the any of the guides. type: general World66 rating: [rate it] Birnin Quarter Edit This x The Birnin quarter is southeast of the modern city. It has some of the finest examples of traditional Hausa architecture, some even better than you'll find in Kano (Nigeria). There is also an old French Foreign Legion fort, and there are some quiet and peaceful gardens you can visit. type: general World66 rating: [rate it] Zengou Quarter Edit This x The Zengou Quarter does not have the architectural beauties of the Birnin, but it makes up for that in liveliness. There are a lot of things going down here between the simple mudbrick houses. type: general World66 rating: [rate it] ______Getting There Edit This x Zinder is a local transport hub, although the spokes are quite far away in this case and transport is not always readily available. Main roads take you to Niamey and Kano (Nigeria, as well as east to Chad via Nguigmi. The road north to Agadez is not very good, but there still is quite some traffic going that way. SNTN buses connect Zinder to Niamey. The trip takes about 14 hopurs ans should cost 14000 CFA. Buses to Agadez do not follow timteables. The trip takes 8 hours. Bush taxi's are somewhat faster and cheaper. Bets to try in the morning. Bush tax's also take you to the Nigerian border, and some alll the way to Kano. To go to Chad take a bush taxi to N'guigmi. |
