Yunnan, on the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau in the southwest of China, is a land of natural beauty and mystery, which covers an area of 394,000 square kilometers with a population of 40,000,000. Yunnan represents the last great region to join the Chinese empire. Even today many Chinese think of it as a " frontier province " although it was Kublai and his successor, 200 years before Christopher Columbus, whose forces entered these mountainous lands that lie just below the Tibetan plateau and abut Vietnam, Laos and Burma. There are great places to visit. Kunming , the capital of this province, is a very interesting town. Most independent travellers head for Dali , once called a second Kathmandu. Other Yunnan, highlights are Lijiang, Shangri-La and Xishuang banna .

____________Getting There
Edit This
Kunming is the transportation hub of the Yunnan Province, with links to all parts of the province via road, rail and air. Kunming has become an important gateway, linking China to Southeast Asia, South Asia, as well as the pacific region. The province also has 10 national ports, 8 provincial ports and 20 highways linking neighboring countries. There are eight civil airports in Yunnan apart from Kunming - Dali, Lijiang, Baoshan, Mangshi, Zhantong, Simao, and Xishuangbanna. A new airport, Lincang airport, is now under construction. Kunming is one of the five major international airports in China. It operates 7 provincial routes and more than 40 domestic and international routes. Passengers can fly from Kunming to many major cities in China, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chengdu. They can also fly to Hong Kong, Rangoon, Bangkok, Chiang Rai, Vientiane, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.

Kunming airport is 3.9 kilometers from the city center. Ticket office telephones: (0871) 3138562 / 3164270

The railways linking Kunming constitute the southwest part of the nation's network. Yunnan has also a total of 100,000 kilometers of highway; the third-largest road network in China. These highways link Yunnan with other provinces and other countries. An expressway linking Kunming and Qujing has been put into operation.

Xishuang banna

Xishuang banna is one of the most fascinating areas in China, home to the Dai people as well as several other minorities. It's full of beautiful countryside, remarkable wildlife and interesting villages as well as the Menghai, Mengzhe and Menghan Buddhist temples.

Lijiang is a fascinating and beautifully preserved center of culture of Naxi nationality. It's not until you get into the old town-a delightful maze of cobbled streets, rickety old wooden buildings, gushing canals and the hurly-burly of market life-that you realize Lijiang is more than a boring Chinese urban sprawl in the middle of nowhere.

Shangri-La
Edit This

Shangri-La (Pinyin: Xianggelila), previously known as Zhongdian, is a small, primarily Tibetan town located 5 hours drive north of Lijiang. The Chinese part of town is typical for the area, but a recent bout of development in the old city center is creating an interesting old town to explore. Many travelers use this town as a gateway into Tibet, either travelling many days overland by Jeep to Lhasa, or by flying from the city's airport. However, the town itself is a tourist destination, primarily due to the nearby Songzanlin Monestary.

Old Town

Old Town

tomber.de

Dali is one of the most popular spots for independent China travellers and hugely popular with those working, teaching and studying in China. Thirty minutes by plane and 5 hours by bus from Kunming, Dali is the perfect place to relax.

Dali is the name of the Prefecture, the local city (aka Xiaguan) and the Dali Old Town. Travellers visit the Dali Old Town for its traditional architecture, minority cultures - mostly Bai but also with many Yi and Hui - and simply to relax. The Old Town has a population of approx. 40,000 and the entire Dali Prefecture around three million people. With the beautiful Cangshan Mountains a short distance to the West of Dali (approx 4200 metres at the peak) and Erhai Lake a few kms to the East, it has a perfect natural setting. The climate is temperate with moderate Summers and mild Winters, though it can get rather windy.

Within the old town you can visit the local Museum which has a great collection of stone steeles (for calligraphy fans) and an interesting section on Dali's role in the Taiping rebellion, People Park, the North and South Gates or just wander the streets.

The famous Tang Dynastry Three Pagodas are located 10 minutes bike ride to the North West, offering one of the best preserved Buddhist structures in China. The Central pagoda is over 1000 years old. The entry price at RMB60+ is rather steep though, but if you want good photos you will just have to fork it over.

Dali has a long and rather glorious history. In 738 the kingdom of Nanzhao was established with Dali as its capital and covered a large area of Yunnan and northern Burma. The kingdom survived almost 200 years and had 13 kings before being overthrown by DUAN, Siping in 937. The Kingdom of Dali controlled by the DUANs survived until conquered by the Mongols in the 12th century. Many local people in Dali have the surname DUAN to this day (rare in other parts of China). These historical events are immortalised in the Martial Arts literature of Taiwanese author JIN Yong (read by every Chinese school kid), giving Dali a fame nationwide.

Despite it's fame as a backpacker haven, local Chinese tourists outnumber foreigners by 100 to 1. Local toursists tend to stay in nearby Xiaguan town so Dali becomes thankfully quiet in the evenings.

Worthwhile day trips around Dali include:

- Cangshan Mountains. Take the cablecar up to Zhong He Temple (worth it as the hike up is not that great, the paths hard to find and rather painful). From Zhong He temple you have a choice of paths running North or South, with each offering equally spectacular views of the mountains, valley and lake. You can head South along good paths for up to 8 hours (with several early exit points down the mountain) and enjoy the view. Spectacular. The Northern route offers the option to head up the mountain and enjoy forest, running streams and ever a swim in the cold waters of a natural pool. Beautiful. Neither routes involve particularly difficult hiking or climbing and the quality of the path is good.

- Shaping market and Xizhou. About 30 kms north of Dali is Shaping town which offers a lively weekly market with plenty of local color. The market starts early. A great chance to see local farmers out in force and literally watch plenty of horse trading. On the way back stop in Xizhou, a town about 20kms north of Dali. Xizhou has almost 200 national heritage listed private houses dating from the Qing Dynasty. The houses are among the best examples of traditional Qing architecture in China and are exquisitely detailed. Much better than anything I have seen anywhere else in China. Chinese style with local touches. Building craftsmen from Xizhou were famous throughout SE Asia and travelled to Vietnam, Myanmar and throughout S W China to build and decorate houses. When they made their fortune, they returned to Xizhou to build their own dream home. As most of these houses are currently occupied, you will need to be on your best behaviour, knock and enter with permission. The best way to see the finest examples are with a local guide as many of the interesting houses are difficult to find. Xizhou also has two estates built in Art Deco style and open to tourists - bizarre, large but not so impressive.

- Erhai Lake and Wase market. Combine a trip to the Lake with a visit to the Wase market on the Eastern shore of the lake. Wase is a traditional and conservative Bai town with a weekly market aimed at both townpeople and nearby farmers. The market offers an interesting look at life in a quite country town. On the lake visit the Guanyin temple and several islands. Go with a group and enjoy a great day out. Boats can be easily arranged as the owners come into town to drum up business and you can see what you are getting from the photobooks they carry.

- Chicken Foot Mountain 'Jizu Shan'. Further away from Dali to the North East behind Wase is Jizu Shan, called this because the mountain and its ranges look like a chicken's foot. Actually a 2-3 day trip in its own right. This is one of the 5 major Buddhist mountains in China and the top and slopes are covered in temples - many in a state of disrepair. Some have been restored and have resident monks. This is a difficult hike with the summit at 3200 metres. Be prepared.

There is plenty else to do and see around Dali. Take you time. Talk with other travellers at one of the 100+ cafes around the old town while enjoying one of the cheapest coffees and pizzas in China. Despite its fame as a tourist town, it is easy to get away from the crowds in Dali. Turn a corner down a quiet street. Jump on a bike. Or just sit in a transquil garden courtyard in your hotel and truly relax. My favorite place in China.

In Dali, if you need to know all local information about Dali and around, you can just pop in Cyclingdali at Boai Road. The owner Lee and sometimes his sister both speak perfect English and are very helpful to suggest places to visit, arrange best money saving trips, transportation and all that I had needed plus their offering are of the lowest. I strongly suggest if you are in need of help, they are the best place you could find in Dali that can help you. They help with all travel needs include bus, train, flight ticket, internet, CD/DVD burning, 1Yuan per minute international phone call, bike rental and repair. If you are in an emergent situation due to language barrier, their translation hot line (which is local Dali Number that does not cost extra) will be of great help. Their number is +86-872-2671385. Their shop is really easy to find in Boai Road. You will see power kites on their shop roof.

Kunming, the capital of Yunnan province, is known as the spring city because of its year round mild climate. Nevertheless during the cold season it might get chilly at times. The city is located at an altitude of 1891 m in the Yunnan-Guizhou-Plateau. For a lot of travelers Kunming is the starting point for travels throughout the colourful province, the land of Chinese national minorities.

Kunming has risen out of a small provincial city to a modern place where high risers dominate the picture. In 1999 the World Horticultural Exhibition was held here with activities throughout Yunnan province. The event led to a boom in building, infrastructure and tourist facilities. Places to visit include the tranquil Cuihu Lake, the nearby Yuantong Temple, Daguan Park and the Provincial Museum with exhibits on the nationalities.

This place is amazing! Incredible views. Unfortunately it has been a bit more modernized (spray painted rocks leading you to hostels on the trail). There's also a main road leading through the bottom now. Still a wonderful destination if you're heading through Lijiang. Just search the cafes in town and you'll find maps telling how to get there and where to go. Definitely stop by the tea-horse inn it should be the first stop on the way from the lijiang side, and especially the five fingers. It was still being built when we were there about a year ago, but the people there were great! yummy walnuts and honey, and the best little old grandmother on earth.
