Marienburg Fortress

Wurzburg (better: Würzburg), centrally situated in Germany, is surrounded by the forested hills of the Spessart, Rhön and Steigerwald.

The city straddles the River Main some 60 km north of Rothenburg and is situated about 110km north west of Nuremberg. Wuerzburg is Bavaria's fourth largest metropolis and the capital of Lower Franconia. Its 88 square kilometers are home to about 126.000 people. The Main-Franconian region lies in a basin below the wooded mountains of the Spessart which guarantees a mild climate and makes it possible to cultivate wine grapes even at this latitude. The high proportion of open land to industrialized area makes for clean air, peace and quiet. There is a network of footpaths as well as extensive bike paths throughout the region, all well-marked and clearly shown on local maps.
During the night of March 16, 1945 Wurzburg got the same treatment from Allied bombers that Nuremberg had received two month before. Huge parts of the city, amongst them some priceless historical monuments, were destroyed completely. Today Wurzburg is one of the main tourist attractions of Franconia due to its world famous “Residenz” palace, its strong connection to the German Road 899 and last but not least its wine.

The Wuerzburg cultural scene encompasses the classics and the avant garde, a fondness for local traditions and an openness to the world. Popular events such as the Mozart Festival, a world-class festival of classical music or the Africa Festival, one of Europe's major festivals of African music, attract hundreds of thousands visitors every year.

There are 600 classical concerts annually and countless performances of modern music in clubs, bistros and arenas. The culture, as well as the daily life, of the past - from the greatest of German sculptors, Tilmann Riemenschneider, back over 3000 years to classical antiquity and the ancient Egyptians - is on view at the Museum of Main-Franconia in the Marienburg Fortress and in the small but extraordinary collection of the Martin Wagner Museum , located in Würzburg's splendid archepiscopal Residence, the world-famous masterpiece of the great baroque architect Balthasar Neumann, considered by many to be the greatest baroque palace in Europe.

The world famous Wurzburg' "Residenz", built 1720-1744 according to plans of the prolific Balthasar Neumann once was the prince bishops' palace. Today it is a UNESCO-World Heritage - a main work of South German Baroque period and one of Europe's most ornate palaces. Visitors can admire the unique famed staircase with cantilever cupola and largest ceiling-painting of the world by the Venetian Tiepolo. An allegory extolling the fame of the prince-bishop in the most immodest way imaginable. The tour of the palace goes through the plain stuccoed "Weisser Saal", before plunging into more..

Cathedral with Crypt and cloister
Edit This

Wurzburg's Cathedral, consecrated to St. Kilian too, was burned out in 1945, so only the exterior is true to the original Romanesque cathedral built in 1045-1188. South of the Dom building you will find the large, picturesque cloister. You can enter from the southern transverse part of the Dom and from the so-called "Burkardushaus". In the cloister you may find numerous tombstones, most of them dating from the 15th to the 18th century. Of special interest are the tombstones of the curates of the Dom and those in memory of the clergy belonging to the former chapter of the more..

The "Stachel", mentioned in 1413 for the first time, is one of the typical courts with romantic courtyard. Next to it is the Vorderer Gressenhof, one of Würzburg’s most beautiful Renaissance courts. The Rückermainhof, built by Greising in 1715, was once the headquarter of the St. Burkard foundation.

_______History
Edit This
Wurzburg is a historic college town originally settled in the 700's. By the 1400's the city university was established and many baroque artifacts and buildings were in place by the 1600's. Wurzburg was also a seat of psychology in the western world for many years. My contribution is based on my fascination with the Allied bombing raid of 16 March 1945. My mother was a 16-year old girl when 226 Allied bombers unloaded 10's of thousands of incendiary bombs in one night and killed over 6000 of my mom's neighbors and instantly displaced 90,000 people. My mother told me that she and my grandmother ran from their apartment carrying only an old accordion while the city was under siege from the air. She said that when the wine casks in one of the churches exploded the streets were ankle-deep in wine and everything was on fire. It must have been surreal. My mother suffered a shrapnel wound to her knee; the scar she still carries to this day. Wurzburg was not a military target, but it was later admitted by the British that bombing non-military german targets had the overall effect of terror that would carry the message to at least three generations of remaining german descendants. The bomber pilots and crews were instructed that Wurzburg was "communication" center and needed to be bombed. The only actual military target was a power switching station. The city was, in effect, needlessly destroyed, and many historical artifacts and structures from the 1600's and earlier were completely and instantly vaproized. My mom still cries when she recalls the event, and remembers the "hell on earth" scenes that must fill her mind. I cannot imagine what it must have been like to have almost 300 aircraft overhead for 20 minutes raining death and destruction on such a beautiful city.

________Getting There
Edit This
by train:

The main train station is located north of the city centre. For detailed train information, check the DB webpage at www.bahn.de or call 0 18 05 - 99 66 33.

by airplane:

Wurzburg does not have an own airport - the two nearest ones are Frankfurt am Main and Nuremberg. Frankfurt International Airport is only a hour away from Würzburg. Hourly trains from Würzburg central station to Frankfurt International Airport guarantee a fast and convenient connection to the international air traffic network. Nuremberg airport is easily accessible by car in approximately one hour. Also, frequent trains running to and from the airport provide excellent connections. In the north-west of Würzburg itself landing permits are possible for private airplanes as well as for business traffic at the landing strip Schenkenfeld. Another option for landing is at Giebelstadt airfield, approx. 20 km outside Würzburg.
