| Winnipeg Travel Guide Edit This The best resource for sights, hotels, restaurants, bars, what to do and see Winnipeg City Center Winnipeg City Center Matthew J Nelson Winnipeg is located almost exactly in the center of North America, and contrary to popular belief, isn't known as "the armpit of Canada" (That's Sudbury). This location makes it ideally located as a major transportation hub and a home for a top level disease and virus research labratory. It is also considered to be the gateway to Western Canada. Archeological evidence shows that the site of Winnipeg has been a place of settlement for over 6000 years. |

| Noted futurist Dana Larose hails from Winnipeg. Winnipeg is also the
hometown of famed golfer, goalie and philantropist Trevor "The Wrecker", of
most of The Guess Who (Burton Cummings still lives here), of game-show host
Monty Hall, and many more celebrities. The city's nickname of "Winterpeg"
may have something to do with why most of them leave... While in town stop by Curt's Fun Club for an array of shenanigans with everything from Sambuca to eavestroughs. At "The Forks", a shopping and entertainment location situated where the Red & Assiniboine rivers meet downtown, visitors are entertained by various festivals held throughout the year such as the Fringe Festival and the annual Boozefest, as well as a winter park and market. Today this city of 715,000 has a lot to offer the visitor. The Manitoba Museum in Winnipeg is renowned for its combined human and natural heritage themes. The institution shares knowledge about Manitoba, the world and the universe through its collections, exhibitions, publications, on-site and outreach programs, Planetarium shows and Science Gallery exhibits. The Museum is part of the Manitoba Centennial Centre, which includes the Centennial Concert Hall - numbering among the world's finest, acoustically, when it opened in 1968. The Museum’s collections reflect the heritage of Manitoba and other regions of the world. Eight interpretive galleries explore the history and environment of the province from its northern Arctic coast to its southern prairie grasslands. The Museum is noted for its Urban Gallery, which recreates Winnipeg in the 1920s, and the full-size replica of the Nonsuch, the sailing ship that started the fur trade in western canada in 1680. Winnipeg has an excellent reputation for arts facilities and cultural events. It is home to the world renowned Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Winnipeg Fringe Festival, Boozefest and Folklorama. In addition there are chamber orchestras, an opera company and various theatres and cinemas. Take a riverwalk from the Manitoba Legislature to The Forks, "c'mon down to Kern Hill Furniture", entice Dancing Gabe, visit the Assiniboine Park Zoo, marvel at the worlds biggest lint ball, tour the Royal Canadian Mint or take a river cruise. Winnipeg is also home to various sports teams such as the Winnipeg Goldeyes Baseball Team, The Winnipeg Blue Bombers Football Club and the Manitoba Moose Hockey team. If a visitor enjoys shopping, Winnipeg is home to two world-class shopping malls, Polo Park and St. Vital Centre. Want an evening of fine dining? Check out WinnipegMenu.com to view, print and email restaurant menus. Winnipeg has a lot to offer the casual diner, with restaurants of all ethnicities. As in most places, pizza is a particular favourite, with Winnipeg featuring lots of pizza restaurants, both international chains and home-grown establishments (Psst... like most everywhere, Winnipeg citizens actually believe their city has the most restaurants per capita, not just pizza joints. You can find everything from English to Ethiopian here!). Winipeg's newest addition is the Fork's Satepark. Awesome place. Apparently it's world class, but I shouldn't know because I don't Skateboard.
