The US Virgin Islands were bought by the United States from Denmark in 1917. Islanders have US citizenship but vote their own government as well has their member of congress. The islands were named Las Virgines by Columbus who discovered them in 1493, in honour of the 10,000 virgins of. St.Ursula who died at the hands of the Huns, somewhere in 7-th century Europe. They consist of three islands. St. Thomas is the capital and is well known with cruisers. It has alluring beaches, good dining and a few historic sights. St. John is a short distance from St. Thomas and is almost completely unspoilt. Most of it has National Park status. St. Croix is further in the south, it is the biggest of the three islands and almost 30 miles long. It's terrain ranges from rain forest to dry desert.

The British Virgin Islands are also hilly, but are less built up with hotels and tourism. The BVI glore with lovely beaches and nice people.

__________Getting Around
Edit This
St Thomas' Cyril E. King Airport is located on the southern coast 3 miles (5km) west of Charlotte Amalie. Alexander Hamilton Airport is on the southern shore of St Croix 7 miles (11km) southwest of Christiansted. Buses and taxis ferry new arrivals to the islands' towns and resorts. The best way to travel between the islands is by boat. Frequent ferries depart from Charlotte Amalie and Red Hook on St Thomas for the short jaunt to St John. There are also dozens of yacht charter companies providing visitors with the opportunity to sail from island to island at their own pace. To travel between St Thomas and St Croix there's a choice of seaplane (several times a day 20 minutes) or hydrofoil (twice a day 90 minutes and a movie.).

Hiring a car jeep or scooter is a good way to get around the islands though finding a parking space in Charlotte Amalie can be troublesome. Signage around the islands is usually restricted to route numbers - make sure your map includes these and remember to drive on the left. There are decent if slow bus services on St Thomas and St Croix and a fledgling service on St John that runs between Cruz Bay and Salt Pond. Taxis are abundant on all islands. They charge a set rate based on the destination and how many passengers are carried.

_________Economy
Edit This

Economy—overview: Tourism is the primary economic activity accounting for more than 70% of GDP and 70% of employment. The islands normally host 2 million visitors a year. The number of US tourists in the first five months of 1996 was down by 55% from the same period in 1995 the lingering result of the fierce hurricanes of 1995. Unemployment rose sharply in 1996. The manufacturing sector consists of textile electronics pharmaceutical and watch assembly plants. The agricultural sector is small most food being imported. International business and financial services are a small but growing component of the economy. One of the world's largest petroleum refineries is at Saint Croix. A major economic problem at the beginning of 1997 was the more than $1 billion in governmental arrears in income tax refunds payments to vendors and overdue wages.

Curz Bay is the main, and really only, town on St. John. It is where the ferries from St. Thomas land. You can also get ferries to the British Virgin Islands from there. There a lots of restaurants and shops and the only real grocery store on the island (Starfish Market). Parking can be difficult and it can be very crowded at the high season.

The biggest of the US virgin islands is best explored from the town of Christiansted. Colonial development of the Virgin Islands is commemorated by the 18th and the 19th century structures in the heart of the capital of the former Danish West Indies on St. Croix Island

Just a few miles away is Salt River Bay. It is the only known site where members of the Columbus expedition set foot on what is now U.S. territory. The park contains the only ceremonial prehistoric ball court ever discovered in the lesser Antilles, village middens, and burial grounds. The area was a focal point of various European attempts to colonize the area during the post-Columbian period by the Spaniards, French, Dutch, English, and Danish. The site is marked by Fort Sale, a remaining earthworks fortification from the Dutch period of occupation.

Just off the coast you find one of the finest marine gardens in the Caribbean Sea, located on Buck Island. Buck Islands is the location of the only underwater national park in the country. The elkhorn coral barrier reef that surrounds two-thirds of the island has extrodinary coral formations, deep grottoes, abundant reef fishes, sea fans and gorgonians, and the occasional sea turtle. At the eastern most point of the reef is the famous underwater trail; both novice and expert snorkelers will enjoy the passages through the reef. The island, which has an overland nature trail and white coral sand beaches, is a rookery for endangered brown pelicans and a nesting area for three species of sea turtles. Seasonally Buck Island Reef supports one of the last remaining protected nesting populations of endangered hawksbill sea turtles in the eastern Caribbean. Visitors can take daily trips to the park. Once there they can enjoy the tropical island its extraordinary array of marine life and tropical flora and fauna while leasurely swimming in the crystal clear waters, or snorkeling or SCUBA diving through the fantastic reef or hiking over the island while getting a birds-eye view of the reef and sea below.

Virgin Islands National Park, renowned throughout the world for its breathtaking beauty, covers approximately 3/5 of St. John, and nearly all of Hassel Island in Charolette Amalie harbor on St. Thomas. Within its borders lie protected bays of crystal blue-green waters teeming with coral reef life, white sandy beaches shaded by seagrape trees and coconut palms, and tropical forests providing habitat for over 800 species of plants. To these amazing natural resources, add relics from the pre-Colombian Amerindian civilization, remains of the Danish colonial sugar plantations, and reminders of African slavery and the subsistence culture that followed during the 100 years after emancipation- all part of the rich cultural history of the Park and its island home.

St. Thomas is extremely beautiful. It is well known for it's shopping. This is because they tend to have high quality items for reasonable prices. Don't forget to haggle with them, they expect it. Magans Bay, which is pictured, is a small private beach with a small fee to get in, I believe it was $5 in 2001. It is well worth it. The sand is white and soft, the water is clear and blue. It is a beautiful spot to relax and start off a vacation.
