Victoria slowly changed from a small pastoral area into Australia’s financial capital. Melbourne is the state’s capital and the second-largest city of Australia. It is one of those cities where you can find everything. Find out for yourself whether it is entitled to claim the title of cultural capital. Famed for the diversity of resturants and cafes in the famous Lygon St Carlton throught to the heady highs of the Melbourne Formula 1 Grand Prix held right in the city. There sure are a lot of cultural events going on and people attend more community events, such as sport games and watching groovy bands. A lot of people set off for a visit to the former goldfields or one of the nearby National Parks. The residents are known to be friendlier and more casual than in NSW. If you plan on visiting the city and need to find everything in one place, try coming in March when the F1 Grand Prix circus is in town, togther with the Moomba Festival following closely in the Melbourne Comedy Festival. If you have more time, Melbourne is famed as being able to surf in the morning, hike or browse in a winery over lunch and ski in the afternoons, it's all here. The seaside offers some excellent views of nature’s forces. You might know the Great Ocean Road, a fabulous drive along the coast that offers beaches, waves and perfect places to go walking or simply enjoy the scenery. The seascape also known as the ShipWreck Coast feature famous natural features such as the 12 Apostles and is the home of the surfing meca Bells Beach. If you want to see more of nature at its best, go to the Victorian Alps in the northeast area. The ski slopes are the best down here and the area is also offers excellent opportunities for bush-walking and horse riding. Basically, whatever you want you can find in Victoria using Melbourne as the jumpoff or base for your trips. Be it seeing the native flora and fauna at the world famous Heallsville Sactuary or Melbourne Zoo, going into anyone of the 100+ National and Satae Parks and Forests, hiking, climbing, white water rafting, hot air balloning, F1 Cars, 500cc Motor Cycle Grand Prixs, airshows, or opera, ballet and simple cultural happenings. It's all to be found here in Melbourne. Known as the Event Capital of Australia. _________National Parks Edit This The best known national parks in Victoria include the Grampians, Wilson's Promontory, and the Alpine National Park, the largest in the State. The Grampians is situated in Western Victoria and consists of a series of ragged mountain ranges, interspersed with rivers, lakes, and Hall's Gap, a township in the mountains. Wilson's Promontory is described as Victoria's best-loved national park, and is on the southern tip of mainland Australia. Camping, walking and swimming are the principal activities in this park, with the main campground Tidal River, requiring a ballot entry booking 12 months in advance during peak periods. There are also 12 outstation camping areas, all which require booking. The park is home to possibly Victoria's best beaches, including Sealer's Cove, Refuge Cove and Waterloo Bay on the eastern side, and Norman Bay and Squeaky Beach the most popular on the western side. The eastern beaches are sheltered and often deserted. The Alpine national park includes eight out of Victoria's nine 1800m peaks, the highest of which is Mt. Bogong, at 1986m. Three major ski resorts, Mt. Buller, Falls Creek and Mt. Hotham are within the boundaries of the park, and there are many ski touring opportunities. There are more than 75 national parks in Victoria, some of which are unspectacular, and others are unforgettable. Victoria's national parks are it's biggest assets. A trip down the Great Ocean Road could consist of a rather long and rushed day-trip, or a more relaxed trip over a few days. For coastal scenery, nothing beats the sights like the Twelve Apostles and Loch Ayrd Gorge close to Port Campbell. If you like lighthouses, there is a splendid one to visit at Cape Otway. Port Campbell, a popular resort, offers besides some interesting sights a good beach. Phillip Island’s south coast claims to have some of the best beaches in the country. Besides waves, you can also spot penguins, occasionally white sharks (!) and marvellous scenery. When you can’t decide yet, just go along the Great Ocean Road and stop at places such as Torquay and its famous Bells Beach.
