Forget about The Hague, forget about Rotterdam, it's Utrecht you are heading for after visiting Amsterdam.

At first sight, you may not see the charm of Utrecht. Arriving by train or car, you'll probably think that it is just one of those cities taken over by big companies. Can you be more wrong? Utrecht, Netherlands' most centrally located city, has so many faces that it will leave you flabbergasted. The city canals cleave the centre and contribute to the specific character of the inner town. Along the canals, you'll find packed terraces in the summertime (or brown cafes filled with people grown numb with cold in the wintertime).

The shopping heart beats throughout the city and especially at Hoog Catharijne, the biggest indoor shopping centre. Nearby is the museumquarter, a collective of six impressive museums. When you don't know where to start, just go to the 'Domplein'(Domsquare), take a deep breath and climb the 465 steps of the Netherlands' highest churchtower and observe Utrecht's hustle and bustle.

Be sure to visit the Maliesingel as this is the most beautiful place ever seen. Many many 30's houses there with great views, people who live there are blessed.

Utrecht is probably best known for its 112 metres high steeple, the ‘Domtoren’. Although everyone believed that the tower and Minster were booked for life, the opposite turned out to be true. In 1675, a fierce storm made the nave of the Minster collapse and the two of them were separated until this very day. On the street, the original contours were marked and one can still see the original size of the Minster. Every year, many tourists climb the old stairs to absorb the dazzling view from the top. Utrecht has several other churches that try to be as impressive as the Dom. Besides that, you can visit some interesting museums.

Finding a destination for your evening, and probably also for the rest of the night once you’ve got the hang of it, shouldn’t be brain-racking problem in Utrecht. Utrecht, città risalente all'epoca romana, ospita nel centro storico chiese, conventi medievali e le case dei ricchi mercanti del secolo d'Oro. Molto caratteristica è l'Oudegracht, l'antico canale nel centro della città. Seicento anni fa il canale fu scavato per permettere l'accesso alle cantine delle case dei mercanti. Queste cantine, che oggi vengono usate da ristoranti, caffè e magazzini, sono situati più bassi rispetto al livello delle strade, lungo l'acqua.
La storia di Utrecht
Utrecht fu fondata nel 47 dopo Cristo dai Romani, che chiamarono il 'castellum' da loro fondato Ultra Trajectum. La fortezza serviva come difesa per la frontiera settentrionale dell' Impero Romano. Nelle vicinanze del Duomo si possono ancora trovare alcuni resti romani. Nel Medioevo Utrecht fu uno dei centri religiosi più importanti dell'Europa, ne sono testimoni la torre del duomo, le chiese e i conventi della città.
Domtoren
Le tredici campane del più grande carillon dell'Europa si trovano nel campanile più alto dell'Olanda: la Domtoren di Utrecht. Quando il cielo è sereno, dal campanile, all'altezza di 112 metri, si può scorgere Amsterdam in lontananza. Il campanile gotico, costruito tra il 1321 e il 1382 faceva parte un tempo dell'edificio del Duomo di Utrecht. Nel 1647 un uragano rovinò la chiesa, ma salvò il campanile, che oggi si trova a qualche metro di distanza dal duomo di Utrecht.
Oudaen, castello e birreria
Lungo l'Oudegracht si trova il castello Oudaen, risalente al 13-esimo secolo. Dopo essere stato la dimora di cavalieri e patrizi, nel Ottocento si trasformò prima in un ospizio per anziani e dal 1984 in un caffè e ristorante. Fino al 1850 l'edificio ospitò anche una fabbrica di birra, nominata 'De Bijl'. Questa fabbrica è stata riaperta nel 1990 ed oggi qui si producono diverse birre artigianali.
