| Turku Travel Guide Edit This The best resource for sights, hotels, restaurants, bars, what to do and see Aura River - Turku Aura River - Turku MCH Turku used to be Finland’s capital but lost its position in 1812. After a devastating fire in 1828, it had to rebuilt most of its houses and gradually became the thriving city it is at present. Still considered by many of its inhabitants as the one and only capital of Finland, it’s a modern university town (Finland’s first university was founded here). This means a lot of restaurants and an exciting nightlife scene. |
|
| However, Turku is proud of its past and has several museums dedicated to its
glamorous and also tragic past. The Turku Castle and Cathedral, dating from
the 13th century, are worth a visit. Not in the least because of the
Historical Museum that is housed in the former. Turku is also known as Finland's Christmas Town. This means that every year, for several weeks, Santa rules the city, including all the festivities and events that belong to it. There is even an annual official Christmas Declaration. Due to its location, it’s only a short ride to the sea, the small seaside towns and the outstretching fields in between. _______Sights Edit This Display all or display just: Historical Sights Hotspots Museums Parks, Gardens and Zoos Show best rated on top | Show in alphabetical order [Add Sight] Aboa Vetus & Ars Nova Edit This Duo museum with the Aboa Vetus on the one hand, allowing you a closer look at medieval times and the Ars Nova on teh other hand, offering an impressive insights into 20th century art. type: Museums World66 rating: [rate it] address: Itäinen Rantakatu 4-6 tel: +358-(0)2-250 0552 Wäinö Aaltonen Museum (WAM) Edit This type: Museums World66 rating: [rate it] address: Itäinen Rantakatu 38 tel: +358-(0)2-235 5690 Sibelius Museum Edit This Museum with a collection of 300 musical instruments. type: Museums World66 rating: [rate it] address: Tue-Sun 11am-4pm openinghours: Piispankatu 17 tel: +358 (0)2 215 4494 Luostarinmäki Handicrafts Museum Edit This About 30 handicrafts shops illustrate the way of life of former generations. type: Museums World66 rating: [rate it] address: Luostarinmäki openinghours: Tues-Sun 10 am-3 pm tel: +358-(0)2-262 0350 Forum Marinum Edit This Maritime centre with exhibitions on and events relating to shipping. type: Hotspots World66 rating: [rate it] address: Linnankatu 72 openinghours: Mon-Thurs 10am-6pm, Fri-Sun 10am-4pm. tel: +358 (0)2 282 9511 Kylämäki Museum Edit This Village of living history. type: Museums World66 rating: [rate it] address: Jaanintie 45 tel: +358 (0)2 262 0420 Ett Hem Museum Edit This House of Consul Alfred Jacobsson and his wife Hélène that serves as an example of upper class life in Turku some 100 years ago. type: Museums World66 rating: [rate it] address: Piispankatu 14 openinghours: Tue-Sun 12noon-3pm tel: +358 (0)2 215 4279, 215 4396 Turku Castle Edit This Turku's grey stone castle dating from the 13th century.
