| Tunis Travel Guide Edit This The best resource for sights, hotels, restaurants, bars, what to do and see i_2 Tunis is a big city that has managed not to lose too much of its charm. The inner city is still the Casbah with its small winding streets that work their way up to the top of the hill where the Big Mosque and the old palace of the Bey of Tunis stand. In the souqs the shopkeepers will try to get you into their souvenir shops with perseverence. The real tourist shops do not have very interesting stuff, but you can get caSsettes with Arabic Music, nice T-shirts and herbs & spices at very reasonable prices. The French city is not bad either. Big tree-lined avenues with cafes, terraces and nice shops give you a mediterranean feeling. |

La città di Tunisi di notte Tunisi(تونس in arabo) è una città di 569.654 abitanti dell'Africa settentrionale, capitale e massimo porto della Tunisia, situata sulle rive di una laguna presso l'antica Cartagine, unita al Mar Mediterraneo da un canale navigabile di circa 10 km. La sua esistenza è già testimoniata nel IV secolo AC. I dintorni della città sono ricchi di vigneti e uliveti.

StoriaLa città fu costruita vicino alla località di Cartagine. Diventò la capitale dell'Ifriqiya (il nome arabo dell'antica provincia d'Africa) sotto la dinastia degli Hafsidi (XIII secolo) ed un importante centro di commercio con l'Europa. San Luigi morì durante un assedio della città nel 1270 ed a Cartagine fu costruita una cattedrale che porta il suo nome nel XIX secolo. Gli ottomani conquistarono la città nel 1534, ma fin dal 1591, essa era dotata di una certa indipendenza da Istanbul. Nel frattempo, Carlo V conquista la città nel 1535 ma, fu successivamente sconfitto vicino Algeri nel 1541, e dovette abbandonare i suoi possidimenti nel Magreb. La città prospera nuovamente come centro di commercio ma anche di pirateria fino allo XIX secolo. Il decreto del 30 agosto 1858 istituisce il comune di Tunisi. L'uomo che fu alla base della creazione di quest'istituzione, il generale Husseïn, diventa il primo sindaco della città fino al 1865. Fu pertanto alla base della riorganizzaione urbana della città. Nel 1881, la città passa, come il resto del paese, sotto il protettorato francese ed è oggetto di trasformazioni urbanistiche importanti. Dal novembre 1942 a maggio 1943, è brevemente occupata dalle forze dell'asse. Tunisi fu la sede della lega araba dal 1979 al 1990, dopo la firma da parte dell'Egitto dell'accordo di pace di Camp David con Israele.

Struttura urbanaLa medina fu costruita su una collina dai morbidi pendii, che scende verso la laguna di Tunisi ad est ed il sebkhet Séjoumi ad ovest. La città europea, fu costruita successivamente tra la medina e la laguna. Da allora, la metropoli si è estesa verso le colline del nord e verso la pianura del sud. La città è divisa in 19 zone:
Il territorio del comune di Tunisi include ormai i comuni di Ariana, del Bardo, di Ben Arous e di El Mourouj nell'ambito dell'agglomerazione urbana. Oggi vi sono numerosi progetti, come quello della società di studi e di promozione di Tunisi Sud, su zone occupate un tempo dalla laguna e oggi prosciugate.
