Toledo is known as the City of the Three Cultures, a name that refers to the Christians, Islamic and Jewish cultures that coexist during centuries. This union of traditions is reflected on the architecture, where it can be seen the Mudejar style, a mixture of Islamic and Christian styles, which predominates in the city.

Rome conquered a stronghold of villages in 190 B.C and gave the name of Toletum. It became a very important town around the first century remaining until the present day the Greco-Latin cultural legacy. In the year 569, after the fall of the Roman Empire, the King of the Visigoths establishes his Court in Toledo and in 589 it became the political and religious capital of Hispania. In 712 the Moors conquered the city and occupied for 373 year.

In 1085, when Alfonso VI took the city, many of the Muslim inhabitants decided to stay with Christians and Jews. The harmony between the three cultures bore fruits as notable as the School of Translators of Toledo. With the crowing of Charles V 1518, Toledo became the most important city, known as the Imperial Capital.

In 1561 King Philip II decided to move the Court to Madrid, initiating a period of political decline, but without effect on religious, artistic and cultural aspects. It was right at that time when El Greco decided to settle in the city and to paint the majority of his famous works of art. In 1989 the UNESCO declared Toledo a cultural heritage of humanity city in recognition of its uniqueness, as it is almost impossible to walk without coming across an ancient mosque, a Gothic or Mudejar church, a Romanesque or Visigothic structure, a synagogue, or a Renaissance palace.

There is so much to see in Toledo that it is the best single place near Madrid to see if you want to add another place to the capital. The citadel has political connotations which may be a turn-off for some but there is plenty left.

The cathedral is of massive historical importance and combines a number of styles in such a way that you may find what you regard as architectural marvels and horrors close together. It is well worth buying a ticket for the areas where that is necessary. The El Grecos on their own woud justify it, as would the terrific wood and stone carving of the Choir.

There are only three synagogues left in Spain, one in Cordoba, and two of them are here. Santa Maria de Blanca is the older one but it strongly resembles a mosque and has served as a church for hundreds of years. El Transito has more obvious Jewish connotations including a women's gallery and has a museum attached to commemorate the life of the Jews in Toledo up to the 15th century.

There are some wonderful mudejar? and other churches and perhaps the best way is simply to wander, get lost and bump into them. The tiny ex-mosque of Santo Cristo de la Luz is worth seeking out in its own right.

EL Greco feels to be just around somewhere and there are any number of his pictures to be seen. The El Greco house and museum are well worth a visit and then you will want to see 'The Burial of the Count of Orcaz', displayed on its own in Santo Tomé.

Museums are well represented?with the Hospital de Sants Cruz?possibly having pride of place.

The first-time visitor to Toledo cannot help be struck by the city as a whole, impregnated as it is with such a weight of history and wealth of culture. The town, perched on a hill skirted by a sharp bend in the River Tagus, has remained almost unaltered since the end of the Middle Ages, surrounded by curtain walls and formed by a winding maze of alleyways and lanes that meander up and down, crisscrossing and revealing, to the visitor its historical sights and secret corners. Toledo is a city to be explored on foot, time and time again, following itineraries that lead to the more..

Even if you normally have doubts about those tourist vehicles that are meant to resemble trains but are really articulated buses, don't discard the idea unless you have several nights in Toledo. This is not dear and a slendid way of getting the famous overall view of the city.

In fact you might find it good enough to justify a second trip during the floodlit time.
