Timisoara is considered one of the most important cities in the Western part of Romania. Timisoara is the capital of the Timis County, a county bordering Serbia and Hungary

Timisoara is a very pleasant city and a good place to stop for some time. Its architecture resembles with that seen in Vienna, the capital of Austria. The city is full of parks and gardens. Sights include the Union Square, Liberty Square and Victory Square. River Bega crosses the city and there are many bridges across it.

The history of Timisoara is beginning to be unrevealed by new archaeological discoveries: remains of the old fortress are nowadays added to those already existing. Timisoara used to be a star-shaped fortress with ten corners, surrounded by a water canal and a deserted area of almost 1 km (to discourage enemies' attacks).

Timisoara is mainly famous for the 1989 revolution when Romanians got rid of their dictator Ceaushescu. It all started in the city and you can see in the city some memorials to the victims. Some of the buildings, especially those in the centre, still keep the tracks of the Revolution, like bullets in their walls.

The city Center, especially the Victory Square has a lot of interesting buildings: the Metropolitan Church, the Opera. The Theater of Timisoara is the only one in the countru that houses three theaters: the Romanian, the German and the Hungarian one. This is one of the indicators of the inter ethnical tolerance of this city.

Union Square is a bohemian destination prefered by high-school teenagers located nearby, students and tourists who want to enjoy the view of old buildings, feed the pigeons or even hear the bells of the Catholic Dome. In summer there are a lot of terraces where people can have a nice chat and a cocktail.

The old and the new combine in Timisoara. Modern life is one of the main concerns of the local administration. Timisoara is proud of its alignment to informational technology- on the local administration's website people can see webcasts of the formal meetings, can chat with the council's members and make proposals and comments on the forum. There are areas where anyone carrying a notebook can use the free wireless connection. Union Square and Traian Square are only two of these.

Tourists can go shopping to Iulius Mall, where they have a wide range of shops, bars, restaurants and also a swimming pool.

Numerous festivals, especially art and youth festivals, have brought Timisoara's old title back to life: "Timisoara, the small Vienna".

Another main attraction is represented by football matches taking place in Timisoara. Its representative football team, Poli Timisoara, is supported by thousands of enthusiastic fans who fill the "Dan Paltinisan" Stadium by day and by night. The representative colours of the football team are white and violet, colours that can be seen not only on the team's flag but also on the new buses of Timisoara.

The name Poli it's an abbreviation for Politehnica, which is one of the educational institution with technique profile that has a long tradition in Timisoara. Another high-studies institution is the Western University of Timisoara and there are also a few other universities.

____________Sights

Even if you don't always find them in the official brochures, there are also some things you may encounter in your way through Timisoara. They don't have written explanations, which makes it more difficult to be found by tourists. Here are some of them:

The House of Prince Eugen of Savoya- on the street with same name, where once was one of the tenth gates of the Timisoara fortress: "poarta forforosa". This Austrian nobleman was an important figure in Timisoara's history, as he eliberated the city from the occupation of Turkish Empire. In 1817 the gate was demolished and the house the survives today was built instead. Above the main entrance there's a nice bas-relief depicting the image of the gate. (Don't be discouraged that the protecting-glass is a little opaque...)

***

The Synagogue (Marasesti street, no 6)- not available for visiting, but still an impressive Jewish monument. Built between 1863 - 1865 in the central quarter Cetate (Fortress), a project of the Viennese architect Ignatz Schuhmann, in a style that reflects the old community of Spanish Jews in Timisoara. Its capacity is of almost 3.000 people. From 1865 it was used by Mosaic Jews for almost 100 years.

Museum of Banat (Huniade Square, no 1)- hosted by the Castle of Huniades, the old residence of Huniade noblemen. Since 1872 it was the main institution to display the most important artefacts in Banat region. It has four main sections: History, Archeology, Etnography and Natural Sciences and also a special conservation and restauration laboratory. Since 2006 the Art section became the Museum of Art Timisoara. Amongst its attractions: the Neolitic Sanctuary from Parta- a unique monument in Europe and a rare collection of violins that once belonged to a passionate craftsman Cornel Suboni.
visiting hours: 10 pm- 4 am every day except Monday
website: www.muzeulbanatului.ro (unfortunately there is no English version)
Tip: as this institution is very often in renovation, you may assure it is available for visiting, by contacting the museum stuff before:

The religious art collection below the Orthodox (or Metropolitan) Cathedral- located in the center of Timisoara. Everyone knows the cathedral (tip: metropolitan comes from bishop, not from metropolis ) which is the protected by the Saint John the New from Partos, whose relics can be seen here. But few know the treasure that is waiting under the cathedral: hundreds of old sacred images and books are gathered here, from all the parts of the country: 3000 rare religious books, over 800 icons and paintings, 130 church objects and so on.
Romania has a 2000 year orthodox heritage which is worth knowing, not only for the aesthetic dimension, but also for its spiritual load.

There is a cemetery- Heroes Cemetery (near Iulius Mall), where it is burried Beethoven's first love. Jeanette von Honrath from Koln (Germany) was also in love with the young composer, but unfortunately he was poor at that time. She married the Austrian captain Karl von Greth (it is said he was both rich and handsome) in 1788. LAter, when he was made general, they came to Timisoara. She died at age of 52, as the wife of the comandor of the fortress. Her grave is marked by an obelisque, but you must look for it carefully as the marble with her name is now missing.

About the Catholic Dome in Unirii Square there is an interesting legend (un-confirmed) that the bride of the man who build it died on the very stairs of the Dome, in her wedding day. This is way-it is said- there are not marriages allowed in this place.
