Another Wild Night At 'Babas!

Another Wild Night At 'Babas!

The Great Swantoon!
If you’re a foreigner, Tianjin a great place to live for a few years. Prices are cheap, people are overwhelmingly friendly and laid-back, and it has all the conveniences of a big city with the atmosphere of a small town (if that’s possible for a metropolis of 9m). If you’re a tourist however, Tianjin offers only minimal destinations of note, and most of these center around food. To be specific, Tianjin is most famous for four types of food:

1) Gou-buli Baozi (pork/veggie buns)

2) 18 Street Ma Hua (hard twisted churro-like sticks)

3) Er-duo (some salty/sweet ear-shaped pastries)

4) Jian-bing Guozi (breakfast burrito with oil-stick in the middle)

Other recommended sights:

Ancient Culture Street (bring your negotiation skills)

Bin Jiang Street (Tianjin’s answer to Nanjing Road)

Food Street (notice the recurring ‘street’ theme)

TV Tower (get a great view of the smog from above!)

Nankai and Tianjin University (China’s Princeton and Brown)

Italian Concession

Italian Concession

Tianjin's a great place. I recommend a walk around the Concession Areas. There's numerous districts where Europeans lived during occupation at the start of the 20th Century (approx!) - these include: British, American, Italian, French and Russian. TJ's architecture has a great European influence as a result, and a lot of the banks etc. used to be official concession buildings.

Alibabas has always been at the top of the heap for nightlife in guidebooks until this year when they over looked it thinking that it was out of business. Truth be told, the old building was demolished and Alibabas moved across from the University in a small Alley. Still same ownership and employees. Now they offer free internet access and have a "take a book / leave a book" program. Beer is still the best deal in town at 8 RMB ($1) per 600ml bottle! Food is cheap but service can be very slow. Still the most lively place in town for expats on friday and saturday nights. more..

Broadies Tavern

Broadies Tavern (formerly known as the Broadway Cafe) is now located on You Yi Lu in the Bar Street area. Great atmosphere, live music, tons of expats, pool tables, drink specials. Broadies has become a Tianjin institution. The food is great (I recommend the pizza) and drinks are average price. What really makes this place unique is the HUGE outdoor dining area and the excellent decor! Plenty of room inside and in the summer it spills over into the outdoor area. Easy to find and a great place to meet people.

The Upper Deck Sports Bar & Grill
Edit This

The Upper Deck, or TUD, is the only Sports Bar & Grill in town. Food is excellent and atmosphere is very up to date and comfortable. Offers a segregated non-smoking section (very rare in China) and a kids room. Very popular with professionals and families. Big Screen TV for sporting events. TUD also sponsors an International Golf Club with free membership! May be a little pricey for backpackers and students. Below is a blurb from their web site: The Upper Deck is Tianjin's Best Sports Bar & Grill. Not only do we provide a great atmosphere and excellent food, we also more..

Harvest Coffee & Book

Harvest Coffee is a great little SMOKE FREE coffee shop in the Hua Yuan Residential Area in Nankai District. Beautiful cozy little shop that serves up great coffee, smoothies, Belgian Waffles with strawberries and even Chicken Burritos! Staff speaks English and menu is in both English and Chinese. Fridays are billed as "College Night" and the shop gets packed with local Chinese college students and Expats. Often Friday nights also include free Chinese calligraphy lessons or other classes in the "Culture Corner". Harvest is also a book store! While the selection isn't very more..
