| Teruel Travel Guide Edit This The best resource for sights, hotels, restaurants, bars, what to do and see Aqueduct/viaduct Aqueduct/viaduct davidx Teruel is capital of the province with the same name in Aragón. It is well up on the edge of the Maestrazgo mountainous area, which is shared by Aragón and Valencia. The city rises steeply from the station but take the long motor route left as a pedestrian, rtaher than going up the staircase, unless you are happy with a lot of steps. Although there are plenty of good modernist and renaissance buildings, Teruel's glory lies in its Mudejar architecture which is as good as any in Spain, not excepting Toledo. Details of the best of these and of the superb Provincial Museum and the Renaissance aqueduct based on the Roman pattern will be listed under sights. A good circuit with a mixture of scenic, architectural and cultural attractions is , starting a Valencia : train to Teruel [three a day - or bus], bus to Cantavieja [1500], bus to Morella [0545 - oh dear!]. bus to Castellón [0740*], train to Valencia [frequent]. * Some guidebooks give an incorrect impression that there are two buses a day from Morella to Castellón. Mudejar architecture, for those who don't know, is a specifically Spanish style developed by Moorish architects working for Christians after the re-conquest. Thus the Mudejar churches of Teruel were built as such, not as mosques. It seems a great pity that photos generally don't really bring out the delicate use of colour in the façades of the towers. They realy need to be seen. _______Sights Edit This i Teruel is not large for a provincial capital but its sights are not far apart and generally you will be OK on foot. Contributors May 02, 2005 new by davidx [Add Sight] Cathedral Edit This The Cathedral is in a mixture of styles - over hundreds of years. The oldest part is the tower, that's largely Mudejar, but it's the magnificent Mudejar ceiling that should be regarded as a mustsee. The entry ticket covers the Cathedral museum as well -quite cheap. Make sure you turn on the lights! type: Churches and Cathedrals World66 rating: [rate it] address: Plaza de la Catedral, El Salvador - Mudejar tower Edit This In a city of great Mudejar towers, this is possibly the best of them all. It is probably a bit more recent than the very similar tower of San Martín, but its osition over a narrow road going downhill gives a terrific view. Both San Martín and this one contain a plain tower inside of the ornate one - but it's only El Slavador that has steps between the two towers enabling ascent. type: Churches and Cathedrals World66 rating: [rate it] url: www.spain.info address: Calle del Salvador, tel: +34 978601648 San Pedro and Los Amantes Edit This The church of San Pedro is the site for the last of the four Mudejar towers, no doubt at least as photogenic as the others when not undergoing restoration. However it's two other features of the church, which make it particularly attractive to tourists. The first is the fact that it provides the mausoleum for Los Amantes [The Lovers] of Teruel. Diego was not allowed to marry Isabel beause he wasn't rich. Her father gave him five years to come back rich. He did - but hours late to hear wedding bells ringing as isabel became the wife of A.N. Other. He begged for a last more.. type: Churches and Cathedrals World66 rating: [rate it] url: www.spain.info address: Calle Matías Abad San Martín - Mudejar tower Edit This i The tower of San Martín is probably the oldest of Teruel's Mudejar towers. It closely resembles that of El Salvador, but here it's not possible to ascend the tower. It's very near the Ayuntamiento and the Cathedral and well worth seeing. type: Churches and Cathedrals World66 rating: [rate it] url: www.spain.info address: Calle de San Martín Acueducto de los Arcos Edit This The aqueduct/viaduct is from the Renaissance period, though built to look Roman. You might well consider the word 'pedestrian' should be added somewhere on the website as you would be mightily pushed to get a car onto the lower level! Even so it's a distinctive building and should be seen. type: Landmarks World66 rating: [rate it] url: www.spain.info address: Camino Bajo los Arcos _______Museums Edit This Teruel's Provincial museum does not enjoy sufficient attention in the guidebooks. It's of quite outstanding quality and its exhibits from the Iberian age [6th to 4th centruries BCE] are particularly striking. The renaissance building is excellent and it formed the first seat of the Council. There are five floors of exhibits and above that an arcaded level, where the guide will take you, certainly if you have shown any interest in photography. Looking out at hte Mudejar towers between the arches is quite something. Very warmly recommended. |
