Il Campanile di Sankt Moritz
St. Moritz (Sankt Moritz in tedesco, San Murezzan in romancio, San Maurizio in Italiano) è una popolare località di villeggiatura dell'Engadina, nel Canton Grigioni in Svizzera. Offre diversi impianti di risalita e piste per lo sci e diversi sentieri per escursioni in montagna. Nelle vicinanze si trova la Cresta Run, una pista per bob e slittino di fama mondiale. La popolazione è di circa 5.100 abitanti, cui si aggiungono circa 3.000 lavoratori stagionali. La ricettività alberghiera e delle case in affitto offre un totale di 13.000 posti letto.
Geografia [modifica]St. Moritz è situato in Alta Engadina, sulla sponda sinistra dell'Inn, affacciato sul lago omonimo. Dista 49 km da Chiavenna, 57 km da Tirano, 77 km da Coira e 118 km da Landeck. È servito dalla stazione ferroviaria omonima della Ferrovia retica, all'inizio delle linee dell'Albula e del Bernina. Il punto più elevato del comune è la cima del Piz Güglia (3380 m), sul confine con Silvaplana.
Gruppi linguistici [modifica]A St. Moritz il tedesco e il romancio (variante putér, cioè dell'Alta Engadina) sono le lingue ufficiali. È significativamente diffusa la lingua italiana, parlata da quasi un abitante su quattro (circa 22% della popolazione).
Le parlate di origine latina (romancio e italiano), prevalenti in passato, hanno mostrato una loro riduzione negli ultimi decenni e così negli ultimi censimenti la maggioranza della popolazione si è dichiarata appartenente al gruppo linguistico tedesco. Sport [modifica]St. Moritz è stata sede delle Olimpiadi invernali del 1928 e del 1948, oltre che ai Campionati Mondiali di sci alpino del 1934, 1974 e 2003.
