| Seville Travel Guide Edit This The best resource for sights, hotels, restaurants, bars, what to do and see Sevillian Balcony - Barrio Santa Cruz Sevillian Balcony - Barrio Santa Cruz Adil Ibrahim Amin - adil_amin90@hotmail.com Before you set out on your trip to Seville, here are a few fast facts about the city and some of Seville's top activities and attractions. Seville is the southernmost of the three biggest Andalusian cities. It is the fourth-largest city in Spain. "Seville" is the English spelling for "Sevilla." Seville represents all that is Andalucian: Flamenco, the horses, toros, gypsies, matadors, etc. Flamenco is an artform that combines song, dance, guitar and percussion. The city also hosts the largest Flamenco Festival in the world. Seville has a wide variety of Flamenco clubs and bars, but a few of the most popular Seville Flamenco clubs include: El Tamboril, Casa Anselma, and Los Gallos. Check out the nightlife section for more. Seville is home to one of Spain's most prestigious and well-recognized bullfighting rings -- the Maestranza. Bullfighting season runs from Easter until Late October. Holy Week (or Easter Week) in Seville lasts from Palm Sunday to Good Friday. During this time parades and festivals fill the air and wine and tapas can be found everywhere. Once a port, this is now one of the most important cultural centers of Spain. Seville is home to numerous fine arts, popular arts, contemporary art, and archaeological museums. Seville was home to a school of painting, during the 17th century, including world-famous artists such as Seville natives Bartolome Murillo and Diego Velasquez, and Francisco Pacheo. The Cathedral of Seville is the third largest cathedral in the world and the largest in Spain. It is considered a world wonder. Seville is connected to Madrid by an excellent high-speed train link (AVE, www.raileurope.com) as well as by its own airport (Seville Airport, www.seville-airport.com) and a good road system. The AVE operates on the Madrid-Cordoba-Seville route and takes passengers to/from Madrid and Seville in 2.5 hours. Here's a bonus: if your train is more than 5 minutes late you're entitled to a full refund. The Madrid-Cordoba trip takes 1 hour and 45 minutes. The 1992 World Expo has left the city with a good infrastructure while preserving the beautiful buildings and streets and quiet alleys of the old town. Seville was the choice of the first royal wedding of the current generation of Spanish royal family. Seville is 58 miles from Huelva; 75 miles from Ronda; 77 miles from Cadiz; 96 miles from Cordoba; 160 miles from Granada; 336 miles from Madrid, and roughly 635 miles from Barcelona. Strolling around the town, with its narrow streets and squares, its gorgeous gardens, and just taking part in the hustle and bustle will also very much be a part of the pleasure you take out of your Seville vacation. The historical centre of political, religious and economic power has traditionally been concentrated in a very reduced area through the passing of centuries and civilizations. This makes visiting the must-sees particularly easy. Head for the Cathedral and you will find yourself at the centre of this area. The huge Alcazar and its marvellous gardens was started by the Arabs and much transformed after the Reconquest by the Christian kings. A few steps away, the Cathedral which was built on the site of the former main mosque still retains its impressive minaret, the Giralda, today used as a bell tower, and its Moorish ablution court, the Patio de los Naranjos. On the other side of the Plaza del Triunfo, the Archives of the Indies still house today the complete collection of all documents relative to the discovery and conquest of the New World. A few hundred metres away by the riverside, the Torre del Oro (Golden Tower), nearby there is also a (less known) Torre del Plata (Silver Tower), is another witness of Arab Sevilla, while nearby the Hospital de la Caridad (Charity Hospital), which is still an old gentlemen's home, has a splendid patio and a church with a magnificent collection of pictures by Valdes Leal and Murillo. Do not leave this part of town without a visit to the famous Plaza de Toros, the bullring, certainly one of the most beautiful in Spain. Sevilla's city map is very easy to understand. The town centre lies within the boundaries of the old Arab walls on the east bank of the Guadalquivir river. These walls, which are visible in parts are symbolised by a circular Avenue, la Ronda, within which it is highly unpractical to drive a car. On the other hand, as streets are mostly still as narrow as in the Middle Ages, few buses can drive through. So we suggest you do as the locals do: walk, enjoy the hustle and bustle, and when you feel tired just hail one of the many cheap taxis. Even the sights and Sevilla activities outside the historical centre, Maria Luisa Park to the south and the Triana quarter across the river, are within walking distance, so the often crowded public transport will be of little use. If you drive, park outside the historical centre where there is usually no parking fee, but make sure to respect a strict rule: do not leave anything in the car, even in the trunk! Contributors June 01, 2008 change by mcburton [Add Local transport mode] Private Car Service in Seville Edit This During your stay in Seville, why not have a private English-speaking chauffeur at your disposal to take you around the city? You can be picked up and dropped off from your Seville hotel, the airport, or a location specified within city limits. You can customize your own chauffeur driven tour for a day. Tailor make an extended tour to have a private driver take you from town to town or around the Seville area (eg. Jerez de la Fronterra, Cordoba, Cadiz, etc..). This is a perfect choice for those seeking a stress free vacation while discovering the area. Choose from a wide more.. Airport buses have few departures. If your intention is to drive around Andalucia, you will find that Malaga (210 km away) is connected to more European cities and often has cheaper flights than Sevilla. www.sevilla-airport.com Sevilla Trip by Rail - A high-speed train (AVE), presently the only high-speed train in Spain and a legacy from Expo 92, offers a splendid service between Sevilla and Madrid in 2.30 hours. There is a departure every hour from the Santa Justa station. It is prudent to book in advance and fare is expensive but well worth the price (www.raileurope.com). On the contrary, rail connections between Sevilla and other cities, in and outside Andalucia, are usually very slow. Excellent information in English can be found at www.renfe.com. Sevilla by Bus - On all routes, within Andalucia and to most cities in Spain, bus services are usually very efficient and reliable. There are two bus stations in Sevilla, El Prado and Plaza de Armas. __________Day Trips Edit This Spending several days exploring the city's surrounding areas during your Seville vacation offers everything from wilderness parks and ancient ruins to underground lakes and old mining towns. Storia [modifica]Vista della città La tradizione afferma che la città fu fondata dalla popolazione dei
Tartessi
verso il
XIII secolo AC e successivamente occupata dai
Fenici e
dai
Cartaginesi.
