Shanxi is in the middle reaches of Huang He (Yellow River). Located to the west of the Taihang range of mountain, it is so named Shanxi (west of the mountain) which makes it easy to distinguish from its neighbour Shaanxi. The total area of the province is 156,000 sq km with 31.4 million in population.

Shanxi has rich cultural and historical sites. After Qin Shihuang unified Chinese states, Shanxi became one of the earliest centres of Chinese culture and civilisation, whose northern area became a defensive bulwark against marauding tribes from the north and west. During the Sui and the Tang dynasties (chao) it once developed as a financial center. Pinyao, one of the four best-preserved ancient cities in China, is the highlights of Shanxi. Mt. Wutai, one of the sacred Buddhist mountains with picturesque natural scenery is situated here. The splendid Yungang Grottoes and 1400-year-old Hanging Monastery are also the attractions in Shanxi.

One third of all China's coal reserves are in this province, which is also rich in iron, cobalt, bauxite and aluminum. The mineral and ore resources make Taiyuan, it's capital, the major industrial centre.

Located in the Wutai County, Mt. Wutai is one of the four China's well-known Buddhist shrines and the only Chinese mountain mentioned in Buddhist scriptures. The mountain is called a cool platform due to its cool and pleasant climates even in the summer. It has been regarded as an ideal place for escaping summer heat since ancient times. Construction of the temples began in the Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220) and last l,900 years. So far there remain a total of 76 temples, ranking first in China. The must-see are the Xiantong Temple, the Tayuan Temple, the Shifang Temple, the Pusading Temple, the Dailuoding Temple, the Guangji Temple, the Wanfo Pavilion, the Foguang Temple and the Nanchan Temple, etc. Each temple with different-dynasty styles has something to be recommended. The five peaks (platforms) of the mountain have outstanding natural scenery. Enclosed by them, the beautiful monastic village called Taihuai lies deep in an alpine valley, which is the center of Mt. Wutai's Buddhist Religion. With splendid wooden architectural style of the ancient China, Taihuai's 15 or so old temples and monasteries are a sampler of the many others dotting the surrounding mountainsides. The most amazing thing is the magical atmosphere surrounded the village, which is peaceful, quiet and elegant.

Pingyao

Pingyao

Knibbe
In the middle of Shanxi Province, covers an area of 2.25 sq kilometers, 90km southward from Taiyuan, the capital of the province, Pingyao Ancient Town is one of the four best-preserved ancient cities in China. Being prosperous and well developed in both Ming and Qing dynasties as a financial and business center, Pingyao was the assembly place of wealthy merchants who built the eye-catching courtyards one after the other, thus made the town the typical folk house in northern China. With more than 1700 years history, the ancient town is the birthplace of the earliest bank in China, named Piaohao, means the firm for exchanging and transferring of money.

The most brilliant spot of this ancient town is its city wall which was originally built during 827-782 B.C. Designed as a military strong-hold, it is 3-6m wide across the top, 9-12m wide at the bottom, 10m in height and 6.4km in length. The body of the wall was first built of rammed clay, and then was enhanced by bricks and stones in the early Ming Dynasty. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, the city wall was renovated 25 times to make the inner and outer city walls strongly fortified. The pattern of the whole town resembled Eight Diagrams (a combination of eight of the 64 Trigrams of the ¡°Book of Changes¡± traditionally used in divination), which is similar to the pattern on a tortoise shell. It thus called ¡°tortoise city¡±, symbolizing its longevity and solidity.

As an outstanding example of Chinese Han Nationality cities in the Ming and the Qing dynasties, Pingyao's ancient architecture fully reflects the historical flavor of those periods. The ancient town has 4 major streets, 8 lesser streets and 72 lanes form a cross shape. The shops, firms and residences were built symmetrically along a 750-meter-long street runs from north to south as the axis, and the Market Tower located in the center.

Along the central street there were over 220 banks, inns, pawn shops, Chinese herb shops, silk shops, tea stores, antique stores and restaurants at that glorious time. The most famous one was Rishengchang, the first private banking unit in China. The folk residences display the noted feature in Pingyao which are a combination of artistry and practicability.

There are many stunning temples inside and around Pingyao. Shuangling Temple (Double Tree Temple), 6km southwest from Pingyao is famous for its colorful sculpture. The Zhengguo Temple, 12km to the northeast features unique wooden structural architecture.

_________History
Edit This
It says in A Survey of Shanxi Province .Establishmental Evolution, written in the period of Chenghua of the Ming Dynasty, that Pingyao County, known in ancient times as the place of Tao, was where Emperor Yao was first enthroned. So the location of Pingyao County today belonged to Tao in the ancient times. It was under the jurisdiction of Bing Prefecture in the time of Yushun in about 2600 BC. After the conquest of the flood by Dayu (an emperor in about 2270 BC ) it belonged to the jurisdiction of Ji .It became a part of Bing Prefecture in the Western Zhou Dynasty. In the Spring and Autumn Period it belonged to Jin State and in the period of Warring States to Zhao State. In the Qin and Han Dynasties it was under the jurisdiction of Taiyuan Prefecture. In the period of Three Kingdoms it belonged to the kingdom of Wei and was under the jurisdiction of the prefecture of Xihe. It belonged to the State of Taiyuan in the Western Jin Dynasty. During the period of Taiwu in the Northern Wei Dynasty, Pingtao County ( established in the Han Dynasty and under the jurisdiction of Taiyuan State), which lied in the southwest of today’s Wenshui County, was changed to Pingyao County to avoid the name of the Emperor Tuo Batao and Pingtao City was also changed to Pingyao City along with it. Later on, because of the invasion of another ethnic group, Pingyao County moved from the southwest of today’s Wenshui County into the boundary of Jinling County, then Jinglin County was cancelled and combined with Pingyao County. Thus Pingyao City, as the seat of the county government, was located here. From then on, through the Tang Dynasty, the Five Dynasties, the Northern Song Dynasty, the Jin Dynasty, the Yuan Dynasty, the Ming Dynasty, and the Qing Dynasty to the present time(from 610 AD-nowadays),the name of Pingyao County has remained unchanged. The long history of the ancient city of Pingyao leaves relics of the ancient civilization in many places and numerous ancient buildings which reveal much about the historical time. Upon the pages of history, are recorded many historical facts that show the importance of Pingyao County in the history: Emperor Kanxi of the Qing Dynasty paid a personal visit to Pingyao on his tour to the west; Emperor Guanxv and his queen mother Cixi stayed for a night in the ancient city when they escaped to the west; President Jiang Zeming inspected the ancient city in the first year of the new century.
