| Shandong Province Travel Guide Edit This The best resource for sights, hotels, restaurants, bars, what to do and see The Annual Qingdao Beer Festival is Asia's largest The Annual Qingdao Beer Festival is Asia's largest Paul W. Davies Shandong is often considered to be the seat of Chinese culture. Located along the East coast of China between Hebei and Jiangsu provinces it juts out into the East China Sea. If China looks like a chicken, then Shandong province looks like a vulture. There are a number of famous cities in Shadong Province. Jinan is the capitol of the province located along the primary north-south rail line along the East coast and is known for Baotou springs. Tai'an, an hour south of Jinan, is known for Taishan (Tai mountain). Qufu, an hour south of Tai'an, was the home of Confucius (K'ung Fu Tzu). Qingdao was a German treaty port and is now a beautiful coastal city with sandy beaches and German architecture. It's also home of China's best beer, Tsingtao (old spelling of Qingdao). Weifang, located on the eastern end of the province, is known for its yearly kite festival. Yantai on the Northern coast is known for its apples. Shandong is considered a seat of Chinese culture for a couple reasons. The main reason is that it was the home of Confucius. The saying of Confucius can be found in The Analects. Confucian thought was (and still is) the foundation of tradition Chinese culture and relationships. Also, Sun Tzu, author of The Art of War, lived in Shandong. Shandong is also known for its silk and porcelain. ::::::::: Qingdao Travel Guide Edit This The best resource for sights, hotels, restaurants, bars, what to do and see Qingdao beach packed with Summer visitors Qingdao beach packed with Summer visitors Paul W. Davies Located at the southwestern tip of the Shandong Peninsular, facing the Yellow Sea on the east and south, Qingdao is a beautiful coastal city with bright sea, blue-sky, cool sea breezes, cobbled streets, and there is much more waiting for you to explore…. Historically, Qingdao was once a sleepy fishing town but in 1897 Germany annexed Qingdao and the surrounding Jiazhou peninsula and introduced German style brewing. Its German legacy more or less intact, Qingdao takes pride in its Bavarian appearance-the Chinese call the town " China’s Switzerland ". In recent years, Qingdao became one of China's first "open door" cities, and it continues to produce the world-renowned Qingdao Beer. Qingdao has plenty of diversions to offer, but the main thing to do here is stroll. So you may enjoy the indolent, flirtatious waterfront, the haunt of the well-heeled inhabitants, the crowds on the esplanade, beach bums reclining elegantly on the sands and skateboarders weaving down the hills, and the beaches and old German town as well. ___________Sights Edit This [Add Sight] Qingdao Brewery Edit This Founded by Germans in 1903, Qingdao Beer has gained worldwide fame today. The beer is one of the province’s most famous exports. It is said that the secret behind this refreshing beer is the mineral water taken from nearby Mount Lao. If the fans of Qingdao Beer want to take a trip to see the brewery, you can take No.25 bus to the spot, the factory runs its own tours and English tour guides are available. Free samples are given - definite incentive to visit the brewery, including a very drinkable dark ale, but you'll have to sit through a lot of statistics first. type: Palaces World66 rating: [rate it] Lu Xun Park Edit This Lying on the south of the Laiyang Lu, Lu Xun Park is the most different park near the sea. Near to the Little Qingdao in the west, next to the No.2 beach in the east, the whole park is attractively decorated with the red riff, blue wave, green pine, quiet pass and lush hill. The park was first built in 1929 and named "Ruoyu Park'at that time. Later it was renamed twice. In 1950, the park was renamed as "Lu Xun Park" to commemorate Mr. Lu Xun, a great proletariat writer. type: general World66 rating: [rate it] Xinhao Hill Park Edit This Xinhao Hill Park means signal hill because a beacon was once on its peak. To its right, there remains one of Qingdao's most astounding pieces of German architecture. Also on this hill is the Xinhao Hill Hotel. Built in 1905 the hotel is overdone in the chunky Bavarian style. Not only it was once the home of the German governor, but also Chairman Mao did hang out here as well, also not simultaneously. type: general World66 rating: [rate it] Protestant Church Edit This The Protestant Church is somewhat a plainer building, a single structure built in 1910 with a bell tower and clock. The white clock face on the green tower is still inscribed with the manufacturer's name,"J.F. Weule, Bockenem am Harz". If you knock at the door, the Chinese priest will probably show you around and inform you that he has a congregation of 1000 people every Sunday. type: general World66 rating: [rate it] address: 15 Jiangsu Lu Catholic Church Edit This The Catholic Church is a German relic built on a hill by the Germans in 1934 and dedicated to St Emil. Regular services are held on Sunday mornings, when the church opens to the public. With its Teutonic shapes and angles - red roofs, and intricate iron balconies - this area, the old German Concession, provokes an eerie sense of dislocation. The marriage of German architecture and contemporary China has created bizarre juxtapositions, with oriental stone lions sitting in discreet European gardens and buildings with grand, pompous facades now used as little shops and laundries. type: general World66 rating: [rate it] address: Zhejiang Lu Road Little Qingdao Edit This Little Qingdao is a small peninsula covering 0.012 sq kilometers. It was originally a part of the mainland. But with the muchly erosion of the seawater, it became apart from the mainland. The most outstanding scene is the tiny white lighthouse built on its peak by German in 1900. Today it can be reached via a sandbank next to the old Soviet-made submarine. It is really a nice place to chill out in one of the cafes. type: general World66 rating: [rate it] ________Practical Information Edit This Please check Practical Information below. You can find the beer in kegs on any street in town and buy it in a bag for cheap. The brewery has an adorable tour where you get free pijou (filtered and unfiltered) and learn about the history of the beer, and China. Be sure to bring some buddies to get tipsy with you, and a few kuai for miscellaneous souvenirs in the gift shop. World66 rating: [rate it] Qingdao Museum Edit This The Qingdao Museum constructed in 1931 on Daxue Lu was originally a welfare institute, the headquarters of the benign but sinister-sounding Red Swastika Association. There's a collection of paintings from the Yuan through to Qing dynasties, and an archeological section in the courtyard which contains four large standing Buddhas dating to 500-527 AD. They are slim, striking figures with bulbous, smiling heads, one hand pointing upward to heaven, the other down to the earth. The heads were cut off in 1928 by the Japanese, and taken away to museums in Japan. They've now been more.. type: general World66 rating: [rate it] openinghours: Tues-Sun 8:00am-5:00pm ___________Beaches Edit This Qingdao is well known in China for its beaches. People come from around the country (the world?) every summer and fill them to the brim. They may not be quite like Western beaches, but they are an experience not to be missed while in town. --Qingdao China Guide Contributors August 11, 2005 new by angie p [Add Beach] Beach 2 Edit This Cleaner than beach 1, this beach is suitable for swimming as long as your standards aren't too high. It's far less crowded than beach 1. Sometimes there is an entrance fee of 2 RMB. You can rent an umbrella for 10 RMB/hour. There are changing rooms and showers, for a small fee. The beach is sandy but there are small rocky cliffs nearby, with pagodas. A sightseeing path starts here and winds down the coast. You can find a castle right next to the beach. The entrance fee is 5 RMB, but it looks better from the outside than in. more.. World66 rating: [rate it] Golden Beach Edit This This beach is actually in Hong Dao, on the other side of the bay. You can go to the port and take a ferry for 9 RMB (each way). It supposedly runs every 15 minutes, but might take a bit longer. Once you get to the other side, you can take a cab to the beach. There are a lot of people, but the water is much nicer than the Qingdao side of the bay. The beach is named for the golden sand, which was very refreshing. There's a roped-in swimming area, and lifeguards sitting on boats about 200 meters out. All in all, a great day trip. But more.. World66 rating: [rate it] Beach 1 Edit This The most popular beach in town, this beach is frequently overflowing with people. It is right near Zhongshan Park and the Aquarium. Cleanliness is questionable, so you might want to avoid swimming. There's a great boardwalk for jogging, and there's plenty of people-watching to be done here. World66 rating: [rate it] Beach 6 Edit This Right near the end of Zhongshan Lu, this beach is the nearest to downtown. It's also by far the dirtiest, with reports of trash in the water. Skip it and head straight for beaches 1 and 2. Contributors August 11, 2005 new by angie p [Add Entertainment place] The Feeling Club Edit This i This is a favorite of young Chinese in Qingdao. Located on Hong Kong Lu near Jusco (but on the other side of the road), this club has techno music all the time and a crowded hydraulic dance floor every night of the week. It's best to hold off until at least 12 to go, because you don't want to be early. Drinks are a bit pricy, but you can always buy one and make a dash for the dance floor. type: Clubs and dancing World66 rating: [rate it] Corner Jazz Club Edit This Le bang is the place to be!
