Ovaninlinna castle in August 2006

Ovaninlinna castle in August 2006

Silvia Mazzarolo- Brasil
Located in Europe's largest lake district, Savonlinna has around 30,000 inhabitants and was built on three islands joined together by bridges. Besides the scenic natural environment the main attraction is St. Olaf's Castle. This great looking fortress was founded in 1475 by Erik Axelsson Tott. The castle served to repel attacks from the east and to guarantee control of the Savo region for the Swedish Crown.

The medieval castle consists of a main castle with three towers and a bailey with an encircling wall reinforced by towers. The castle went through numerous phases of construction, first as a Swedish and from 1743 as a Russian border fortification. It has been among Finland's best-known tourist attractions since the latter 19th century. It houses a restaurant and festival halls.

It is also home of the annual Savonlinna Opera Festival, that takes place in July (www.operafestival.fi) and Savonlinna Ballet Festival every June (www.savonlinnaballet.net).

_________History
Edit This
Eerik Axel’s son Tott founded Olavinlinna castle in 1475 on the island in the Kyrönsalmi straight. The castle, which was also called the New Castle (Savonlinna is still called Nyslott in Swedish, the New Castle), was built to protect the eastern border between the Greater Sweden and Russia. Vääräsaari received the city rights in 1639, when a small group of settlers began living on the island. This was the founding of Savonlinna.

The development of the city was rapidly increased in the beginning of the 20th century, when the spa was built along with the saw mill. Also the building of the Saimaa canal and the construction of the railway system created a positive effect for the city.

In the early 1900s Savonlinna was already the centre of shipbuilding and traffic on the Saimaa. The industrialization of the city began around that time as well. In 1973 Sääminki County was joined into Savonlinna.

_______Getting There
Edit This
The distance from Helsinki to Savonlinna by road is 335 km and there are daily express coach services. An express train journey from Helsinki to Savonlinna takes less than 5 hours, whereas a flight from Helsinki takes between 40-50 minutes. In summer scheduled boat services operate from Kuopio, Punkaharju and boaters from farther afield have access to the region via the Saimaa Canal. The Savonlinna region has good public transport and well-maintained roads. You can explore the region also by touring with your own car or bike, or even by boat or on a cruise aboard a genuine steamboat.

Information on train schedules can be found from VR - www.vr.fi

__________Nightlife and Entertainment
Edit This
Savonlinna has a great nightlife compared to its size. In the busy summer months the city is extremely active with tourists from around the world.

The general price level picks up a bit for the duration of the opera festival, so the drinks might cost the 50c extra than usual (also depends on the summer).
