Zaragoza is the capital of Aragon. It is a city full of custom and culture. Only small numbers of non-Spanish find their way to this large and lively city between Madrid and Barcelona. Three quarters of the million people population of Aragon are living in Zaragoza. Besides some outstanding historic sights and its proximity to the central Pyrenees, there are excellent restaurants serving Aragonese food.

Zaragoza offers the visitor a rich historic heritage which is the result of more than two thousand years of existence. The Iberians, Romans, Moors, Jews and Christians all left their mark here and some people call Zaragoza the "City of the Four Cultures" The most impressive building is without a doubt the Basilica de Nuestra Senora del Pilar. The giant church can be seen from far outside of the city. Besides this higlight there are quite a number of interesting buildings and monuments to be seen in this very Spanish city.

This gothic cathedral, with lateron added parts in neoclassical, baroque and plateresque styles was built in 14th century, over an older Romanesque temple. In its interior, which consists of five naves with lateral chapels, the main-altar with splendid reliefs and the Mudejar-style apse are remarkable. Among the lateral chapels, which generally are very valuable from the artistical point of view, the Capilla de Don Lope de Luna, of 14th century, is outstanding.

Palacio de la Aljafería

This splendid king's palace of 11th century is one of very few remaining Moorish buildings of the dynasty "Taifas". The mosque with its minaret and the Torre del Trovador, a fortificated tower, are left of the original construction. Some other parts with rich Mudejar-style ornaments were added in the Christian epoch. The Throne Hall in particular is remarkable.

This church is one of the most popular destinations for catholics in Spain. The building is consecrated to the "Holy Virgin of Pilar", patroness not only of Zaragoza but of all Spanish-speaking countries. Situated next to the river Ebro it is the place of the annual celebrations to the "Day of Pilar", at October 12th. The church was built in 1681. It is flanked by four towers. Some parts, as the neoclassical main-facade, were added in later periods. In its interior the wall-paintings in the cupola, works of Goya and Bayeau, are of particular interest. The ruins of the Roman fortifications, of 3rd century, are a landmark of Zaragoza. Very well conserved parts you can find close to the Tower of Zuda and to the church Iglesia de San Juan, alongside Ebro river. The remains of the Roman walls, sewage system, theatre, paving and magnificent mosaics are still preserved and show us the great importance this colony once had.

_________Festivals
Edit This
The best festival in Aragon is in honor to the Virgin of el Pilar. It always takes place around the 12th October and lasts for 9 days. The festival finds it's origin in the belief that the Virgin Mary miraculously visited the apostle Saint James in Zaragoza. The events include the multitudinous pregón (a speech proclaiming the forthcoming festival), the final fireworks in the Ebro river, a succession of street brass bands, dances, parades of giants and cabezudos (figures with an enormous head that chase after the children), concerts, exhibitions, the famous vaquillas, when everybody can run in front of young bulls in the bullring, and the well-known bullfights.

The offering of flowers (Ofrenda de Flores) to the Virgin on the 12th of October is remarkable: the flowers form an enormous mantle for the Virgin in the middle of the vast square; the crowded Mass of Infantes (child singers) occurs at dawn on the same day and the beautiful Rosario de Cristal (Crystal Rosary) can be seen in the afternoon on the 13th. The Rosario de Cristal parade is a street procession with 258 lanterns and 15 polychromatic crystal floats, with great popular participation.
