San Juan del Sur is not a spectacular but most definitely a charming fishing village on Nicaragua’s southern pacific coast and is well connected to Managua. The town itself offers a lighthouse nearby the William’s walker ruined fort. There are several beaches with excellent surfing possibilities. The most popular surfing beach being Playa Maderas which is about a 20 minute ride from San Juan Del Sur. Arenas Caliente is a surf shop near SJDS's enclosed mercado which offers round trip rides to Playa Maderas for US$6.00 round trip. You'll be dropped off around 10:00 am and picked up at 4:00 - 4:30 pm. There are also many taxi cabs competing for rides to the beach. Even if you're not a surfer, the beach is beautiful. Waves are high quality and a contrast to the seldom surfable waves in the bay at San Juan Del Sur. Board rentals are available at several shops in SJDS. Be sure, when out to the beaches of Marsella and Maderas, to stop in at The Empalme a Las Playas (the fork in the road to the beaches) and check out the cabanas or the howler monkeys cruising the canopy along the water course.

Besides that, you’ll have the chance to see nature at it’s best: forests, fishes and (rare) birds. San Juan is also known for its turtle refuge sanctuary and this is the place where you can spot both enormous and tiny (endangered) sea turtles.

Restaurants and bars dot the San Juan Del Sur beachfront and are all quite pleasent. The main expatriat hangout was Ricardo's on the beach. Since it's closing other spots like Iguana Bar and Rocamar Beach Bar have taken up the slack. Rocamar shows movies and concerts on the big screen while serving up authentic smoked foods right on the beach. Check the side streets for late night carne asada and pollo streetfood.

__________Practical Information
Edit This
The town of San Juan del Sur itself is relatively safe, but some of the surrounding beaches are not safe for foreigners or tourists. Be sure to ask around town about which beaches are safe to visit. The local taxi drivers, who tend to congregate around the market (one block in from the ocean, about mid way through the town), can probably tell you which areas are safest.

As of this writing, in early 2008, tourists should not visit the Remanso or Yankee beaches, as many foreigners have recently been held up at knifepoint on those beaches.
On the other hand, the Madera, Majagual, and Coco beaches have a reputation for being safe.

In the Beautifull Democratric Republic of Nicaragua there are not very well posted signs to the destinations in the country, but rather , very famous landmarks which make it some what easy to get around, and of course the good old stop and ask the frendly locals.

Easy to get lost driving in Nicaragua? NOT AT ALL. You are more likely to end up in one of the sight seen areas than away from your final destination. ( there is only a handfull of main roads that all lead to the major citys) so no worries.

Driving at night is not recomended since like more..

Take the Bus from Managua
Edit This

The cheapest way to travel from Managua to San Juan del Sur is by bus. A direct bus leaves the Managua bus depot twice daily. If you don't find the direct bus, or it's not running, take a bus to Rivas, then get on a second bus to San Juan del Sur. The total cost of the trip is less than $5 US.

_________Nightlife and Entertainment
Edit This
San Juan del Sur now has an e-magazine;sjdsnow with Old Time Radio shows(OTR) free on the internet. The locals and new comers enjoy listening to the OTR shows to help remember the "golden days". The shows are changed regularly by a local web master.
