| San Diego is the home of numerous military facilities including Navy ports
and Marine bases. It is the home port of two Navy carriers, the USS John C.
Stennis and the USS Constellation, five amphibs, and numerous smaller ships.
One of only two of the United States Marine Corps' Recruit Depots is located
here Close by is Coronado and one of the finest beaches in California,
right by the renowned Hotel Del Coronado which was famously featured in
"Some Like It Hot".
San Diego has some wonderful museums at Balboa Park, located just north of
downtown. An IMAX theater, a science center, a natural history museum, an
art museum, and an anthropology museum, among others, are all housed in
beautiful buildings, built in the Spanish colonial style.
The beaches are fantastic. but the jewel in the crown is La Jolla, a
peaceful and picturesque beach to the north of the city.

Best Beaches
Edit This
San Diego has some of the best beaches in California. Coronado beach -
located behind the Del Coronado Hotel on Coronado Island, one of my
favorites (fewer people); Mission Beach - great beach town with several
miles of sandy beaches and hundreds of thousands of tourists during the
summer, teens and families love this town located between San Diego and La
Jolla near Sea World; La Jolla beaches - there are several along the
coastline of this very upscale community, some with sand, others just rocks,
a few with seals and sea lions located just down the hill from the more..

__________ History
Edit This
Vietnam Unit Memorial Monument, located at the Naval Amphibious Base,
Coronado, California
Currently, three small boats from the "Brown Water Navy" era, which typify
"Brown Water" Naval operations in the Vietnam war provide the background for
the Memorial Wall. Although there were extensive "blue water" Navy
operations off the coast of Vietnam from 1960 to 1975, the Brown Water Navy
represented a unique chapter of the Vietnam war. These small boats are: PBR
(Patrol Boat River); a PCF (Patrol Craft Fast) and a CCB (Command
Communications Boat). These boats point towards a curved concrete wall which
is sixty feet long and eight feet high. This wall displays the names of all
Navy and Coast Guard personnel who died while supporting naval operations in
Vietnam during the period 1960-1975. The "unit" aspect of this memorial
comes from the concept that names of the casualties of the war will be
displayed in connection with the unit to which they were attached at the
time of their death.
The memorial and boat display were authorized by Commander Navy Region
Southwest in June 1999. Procurement and restoration of the boats on display
have been done by veterans from three organizations: The Swift Boat Sailors
Association (SBSA); the Gamewardens of Vietnam (GVN); and the Mobile
Riverine Force Association (MRFA). All restoration, construction of pads,
movement of the boats and maintenance have been done using only private
funds and services donated by businesses with an interest in the history of
the boats. guidance and approval for the construction of the Memorial Wall.
In December 2002, the Vietnam Unit Memorial Monument Fund (VUMMF) was
incorporated in the State of California for the purpose of providing
management, raising funds and providing continued maintenance for the
Memorial. Tax exempt status as a 501(c)(3) organization was approved by the
federal government on February 20, 2003 and by the State of California under
code section 23701d on February 24, 2003.
The Memorial was dedicated in formal ceremony 21 May 2005. More information
can be found on the Vietnam Unit Memorial Monument website: www.vummf.org.
_______Getting Around
Edit This
San Diego's Lindbergh Field airport is 3 miles (5km) northwest of the
downtown area. Municipal buses shuttle buses and taxis make the short trip
downtown an easy one. The major car rental agencies have desks at the
airport. If you plan on driving to Mexico or Las Vegas, Nevada make sure
your rental agreement allows for this.
The city bus system covers most of the metropolitan area while the North
County Transit District (NCTD) covers the north county coastal and inland
cities. It is a convenient way of getting around if you're not staying out
late at night. Two trolley lines run from the terminal near the railway
station at the western edge of the downtown grid. One heads south to the
Mexican border at San Ysidro the other heads east through the downtown area
to Santee. the trolley and bus fares are very reasonable.
A commuter rail service ( The Coaster) operates from the Santa Fe Railroad
Depot along the coast north of the city in the morning and evening rush
hours. Also there is standard railway service available through Amtrak that
can take you on longer trips to other cities or states. A ferry shuttles
between Coronado and the Broadway Pier on the extreme western edge of the
downtown area. There are great cycle routes in Pacific Beach, Mission Beach,
Mission Bay, and Coronado. MTS buses on some routes have a bike rack and
bikes can be transported without extra charge.

Highway System
Edit This
The highway system in California is very extensive and will be invaluable to
those traveling by rental car. There are many major interstate 4-lane
"freeways" that help the tourist to traverse the state more easily. Roads
numbered with an "ODD" number go north-south while "EVEN" numbers go
east-west. The traveler is advised to try and avoid the rush hour traffic in
the mornings and early evenings as this makes the trip much more time
consuming due to the heavy volume of traffic.

San Diego Argosy Harbor Excursions

Go San Diego Card
There are all kinds of things to do around San Diego. If you're downtown,
take the ferry over to Coronado and ride bikes around the area. You'll get
great views of the bay, ocean, and bridge, and be sure to stop by the famous
Hotel Del. Every visitor should spend some time walking through Balboa Park
while. At night you'll probably want to check out the gaslamp district
downtown and if you want to see amazing views of the city and water, go for
a drink at the top of the Hyatt. Show up early for sunset because the good
tables go fast. Mission Trails Regional park has some good hiking; Cowles
Mountain is a popular trip. You could also head out to Lake Murray, rent a
canoe and have a picnic.
Further north in La Jolla, get to the coast and watch the fliers do their
thing at the Torrey Pines Gliderport. The Torrey Pines trails are nice also,
and as long as you're in the area, take a walk down to the La Jolla Cove and
south to Children's Pool where the seals hang out. Definitely one of the
best pieces of coastline in the area. There are also some sea caves that can
be explored by kayak. |
