The castle is said to have been built by Heinrich dem Löwen ("Henry the Lion"), one of the most powerful princes of his time, at the end of the 12th century. Burg Lichtenberg , stategically well situated at a slope of the Lichtenberg hills amidst the woods, served as one of Heinrich's bases to defend his power against the rulers of Hildesheim and Goslar. As the city consists of separate villages, sometimes a far cry off from one another, it might take you some time to get from one quarter to the other. To Salzgitter-Lebenstedt for example, there is a train from Braunschweig about once every hour. The train station in Lebenstedt is tiny, with just one track, and has seen better days. It's roofed, so you can skate even when it is raining. Every second week, there is an "ice-disco", mostly frequented by teens. The ice rink is open from October till Easter.
