Salzgitter Travel Guide
Edit This The best resource for sights, hotels, restaurants, bars, what to do and see
Salzgitter was founded in 1942 by pooling together 29 already existing villages. Two more were added in 1974.
These 31 villages still form the quarters ("Stadtteile") of the city. The largest are Salzgitter-Lebenstedt and Salzgitter-Bad.
Even though Salzgitter's area is said to be one of the largest in Germany, the city is not much known apart from its name. Maybe wrongly, because there are some very pretty corners, that are worth while visiting. And you can get a good idea about what small town life in northern Germany is like.

Burg Lichtenberg
Edit This

If you like walks in the woods, you should not miss visiting the ruins of Burg Lichtenberg . The castle is said to have been built by Heinrich dem Löwen ("Henry the Lion"), one of the most powerful princes of his time, at the end of the 12th century. Burg Lichtenberg , stategically well situated at a slope of the Lichtenberg hills amidst the woods, served as one of Heinrich's bases to defend his power against the rulers of Hildesheim and Goslar.

What you see today is just a few relics, as the castle was destroyed in 1552 in the wars more..

Salzgitter Ice Rink - "Eissporthalle am Salzgittersee"
Edit This

"Eissporthalle am Salzgittersee":
If you happen to visit Salzgitter in winter-time, try out the ice rink at the Salzgitter-Lake.
It's roofed, so you can skate even when it is raining.
Every second week, there is an "ice-disco", mostly frequented by teens.

The ice rink is open from October till Easter.
You can look up the current operating hours at:
www.salzgitter.de/frames/sp_auto _6311.html
