Salamanca Travel Guide

Salamanca is located by the Tormes river and is one of the most spectacular Renaissance cities in Europe. It is well-known for its very old university (founded in 1218)and probably the most popular place to learn the Spanish language. This university is still what gives ambiance to the town. You can see hundreds of students passing through the streets and enjoying numerous and beautifully decorated bars until late at night.

In the city, golden sandstone has lent itself to every major architectural style from Romanesque to baroque, even the modern quarters are largely built from it. The city has been declared "City of Mankind's Heritage" by UNESCO.

The city is large enough (180.000 inhabitants) to be able to offer the advantages of a real city, but at the same time it keeps the intimacy of a village. It is very easy to meet people - just got to the Plaza Mayor, one of the finest squares in Spain and meeting point for the Spaniards and foreigners alike.

The main sights in Salamanca are all fairly close together. You will no doubt want to see the Cathedral, the University [fine on quality, disappointing on quantity] the Casa de Conchas [House of Shells] and the fantastic Plaza Mayor but here are two places that should not be missed.

1. Convento de San Esteban. The Plateresque facade and the cloisters are very fine indeed and

2.Convento de Las Dueñas - here you will see the best cloisters in the city.

Half day tour of the old quarter of Salamanca with an expert Private English-Speaking Local Guide. The city of Salamanca is a true museum of architecture, and there are examples of constructions from all the different eras and in all the different styles. The buildings of Salamanca were constructed using stone from the nearby Villamayor quarry. It was as soft as sandstone, and during the 16C was finely worked to produce the marvellous filigree work of an art that became known as Plateresque. It is a stone that is composed of iron ore which hardens and rusts in contact with the more..

The Cathedral, Zamora

The Cathedral, Zamora

davidx

There are buses throughout the day that reach Zamora in about an hour. This was known as 'The Closed One' in mediaeval times because it is high on a hill and could be completely fortified. It is historically one of the great cities and does not deserve to be downgraded now. Whereas Salamanca is one of the grandest cities in Spain, zamora is more delicate and earns the adjective 'graceful.'

The cathedral is a most impressive building, particularly the exterior and the old city seems to teem with beautiful Romanesque churches. There is one very plain one outside the walls where El Cid is said to have worshipped. Some of the streets around the delightful plaza mayor [though it is considerably less grand than that of Salamanca] have attractive Art Nouveau shops.

For those interested there is a bus several times a week into Portugal.
