Historical landmarks, such as the Klunkhardshof, the fortified Adler Tower, the thousand-year old Broemser castle and the ruins of the Ehrenfels Castle invite you to linger. Those seeking peace and tranquillity will find it in the extensive forests of the nature park Rhein-Taunus, in the natural beauty of the vineyards, or in the hidden alleyways of the town. From the vantage points of the Niederwald, the visitor can also enjoy breathtaking views of the Rhine valley with the Nahe river estuary and the beautiful uniformity of the steep vineyards. Talking of wine: enjoy the superb Ruedesheimer Riesling, together with music and dancing, in the Drosselgasse or in the numerous inns, wine bars and taverns. Eibingen (District of) More than a thousand years old, the history of this pleasant little wine- growing village is closely connected to Hildegard of Bingen, who founded a monastery here in 1165. The Catholic parish church now stands on its foundations, where her relics are still kept in a precious shrine. Named after her, the present Benedictine abbey was built at the beginning of this century and dominates the town where cosy inns, guesthouses and wine bars offer you their hospitality. Windeck (District of) Nestling among the woodlands and vineyards, “The Windeck” rises to an altitude of 250 to 300 metres, with a panoramic view over the Rheingau. Holidaymakers seeking absolute peace and quiet, who enjoy hiking in the forests and vineyards can relax in the many country inns, private rooms and apartments. The Rudesheim town centre is a half-hour away on foot. Assmannshausen / Rhine (City of) On the most romantic part of the Rhine river where the Rhine valley scenery is most impressive, lays the historical wine-growing village of Assmannshausen with its narrow streets and picturesque houses with pointed gables. Not only the mighty Rhine dominates the landscape, but also the impressive Rheinstein Castle on the opposite side, the woodlands of the Taunus range, and the hanging slopes of colourful vineyards. First mentioned in 1108, Assmannshausen has since then been primarily connected with wine-growing, and over the last two centuries has developed as a holiday resort offering a whole variety of activities. Nature-lovers feel just as much at home here as do gourmets in the quality restaurants and cosy wine taverns with romantic terraces tempt the visitor to taste the Red Burgundy of Assmannshausen, one of the most famous German red wines. Aulhausen (City of) Two kilometres inland from Assmannshausen, set among rolling fields and dense woods, is another wine-growing town named Aulhausen, an ideal starting point for the many well-signposted hiking routes through the nature park Rhein-Taunus, offering beautiful views across the vineyards and over the wooded hilltops down to the Rhine valley. With the Niederwald monument close by, families are well catered for with various leisure activities such as pony and coach riding during the day and to make it complete a visit to one of the homely inns and taverns in the evening. Presberg (City of) Twelve kilometres to the north-west is situated on a plateau 450meter above Rudesheim and is its highest suburb. Surrounded by beautiful valleys and green hills, with an unbroken view over the Taunus and Hunsrueck ranges it is a paradise for nature lovers and the well-marked nature trails invite you to discover the area. In winter the ski cross country tracks are clearly laid out. __________Sights Edit This Display all or display just: Castles Museums Parks, Gardens & Zoos general Show best rated on top | Show in alphabetical order [Add Sight] First German Scooter Museum Edit This x The first German and world-wide largest collection of scooters. It symbolizes the reestablishment of the German Empire after the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71. The main figure is Germania, holding the imperial crown in her raised right hand and the imperial sword in her left hand. The heights of the Niederwald can be reached via cable car and chairlift from Ruedesheim and Assmannshausen, respectively. The church dates from the 14th century and is said to have been built by the knight and crusader Johann Broemser. The half moon and star on the weather vane atop the church tower are a reminder of the days of the crusades. The church was almost completely destroyed in 1944, but was rebuilt of quarried brick typical of the Rhine area. Of special note are the medieval tombstones with effigies of Ruedesheim's nobility, situated in the northern aisle, as well as the Gothic tympanum above the western portal. type: general World66 rating: [rate it] Adolf Störzel Edit This x We visited the wine cellars of the above named vintner in August, 2002. We tasted some lovely german wines with a view to buying, although there was no obligaton to buy. Herr Störzel was very knowledgeable about the history of his wines, which had been a family concern for a number of decades. He spoke very good english and had a keen sense of humour to make the visit very enjoyable. I could certainly recommend this cellar as an excellent place to taste the local wines. type: Museums World66 rating: [rate it] address: Weberstrasse 4,D 65385, Rüdesheim am Rhein openinghours: Mornings and afternoons Boosenburg / Oberburg Edit This x Romanesque keep, next to the Broemserburg. The shape of the building alludes to 9th-century origins. Standing 38 meters high, the tower of the Boosenburg is the town's tallest building. Nestled into these walls, which are up to three meters thick, is a castle-like residence. The entire complex is privately owned and, unfortunately, not open to the public. type: Castles World66 rating: [rate it] Adlerturm Edit This x On Rheinstrasse, on the bank of the Rhine. Four storeys, 20.5 meters high, with an inside diameter of 5 meters and walls one meter thick, including the dungeon that was accessible only through a hole at the top of the cellar. Formerly, the tower was situated directly on the Rhine. It was from here, the Adlerturm, that a pole with a flaming basket was mounted to signal the breakup of the ice floes. However, the Broemserhof, constructed from 1542 onward, is doubtlessly the most beautiful of all the noble manors on this street. This former residence of Ruedesheim's ancient Broemser dynasty has an impressive Gothic chapel and an ancestral hall with splendid frescoes. Today, the Broemserhof houses a museum. type: general World66 rating: [rate it] Parish and pilgrimage church St. Hildegard Edit This x On the foundations of the original convent dating from 1165 are the parish and pilgrimage church of St. Hildegard as well as the restored east wing of the cloister. In 1632, during the Thirty Years' War, the Swedes destroyed the monastery of Rupertsberg by fire. Although it was partially torn down, it served as the village church until it was completely ruined by a fire in 1932. One year later it was rebuilt, incorporating some of the earlier elements of style. It houses the St. Hildegard reliquary. With these words Karl Baedecker (1801-1858) began the 17th chapter (entitled the "Niederwald") of the work for which he became famous, "A Rhine Trip from Basel to Duesseldorf." Landscaped at the end of the 18th century by the Counts of Ostein as an English-style park, complete with artificial ruins, the Niederwald became quite an attraction. They converted the old fortress into a residence in the 12th century. Originally, it was right on the bank of the Rhine, surrounded by water. Its more than two-meter-thick walls withstood all offensives. Only the southeastern portion was destroyed by the Duke of Longville. A mine path to the keep bears witness to its invincibility. After being secularized in 1803, the castle had several owners until the town of Ruedesheim purchased it in 1941.
