'De Boeg' - monument for WWII casualities in the merchant navy

'De Boeg' - monument for WWII casualities in the merchant navy

Carel Ris
This large and modern port city has risen phoenixlike from the ashes of World War II. In 1940 the Germans bombed the city to force a fast surrender of the Netherlands. Most demolition was actually done in the process of rebuilding the city to modern standards. Only three large buildings in the center have survived miraculously: the city hall, the St. Laurence church and the White House.

Today Rotterdam is the most modern city in The Netherlands, with the high rising towers of company buildings in the center. Some people think it became a playground for architects trying their theories and thus making Rotterdam one giant wind tunnel, but you can really feel things are happening here if you are interested in architecture. For quite some time it is the place to be for a perfect night out. Though Rotown has decent, though small acts and is well-known internationally, The Thalialounge is the place to see and be seen in a groovy club atmosphere, and De Doelen is a wonderful venue for classical music. Clubs like Now&Wow, Off Corso and Baja Beach Club are very popular in The Netherlands. Rotterdam has become nightlife city number one, taking over this position from Amsterdam.

Symbol of Rotterdam is the Euromast Space Tower, 605ft/184m tall that had to be extended several times to keep its leading position as highest building of the Meuse city. From this tower with its revolving sit-down elevator you have an excellent view over the city and the surrounding industrial harbour landscape. The harbour, one of the busiest in the world, is a draw in itself and still the largest one if you count by pure volume.

A city like this can’t do without Museums. A collection of painting, sculpture and design worth seeing is displayed at the Boymans-van-Beuningen Museum. A day in Rotterdam is sufficient for most, but you can also spend several days if you want to see it all. The Dutch institutes of photography and of architecture are located right near the center, and there are lots of galleries. In February there is always the International Film Festival and every other year there is a photo biennale. The Kunsthal, designed by the famous architect Rem Koolhaas, has changing exhibitions on all sorts of expressions of art and culture.

The people, though claiming to be one of the friendliest of Holland, tend to somewhat distrust foreigners. In 2004 the city laws to forbid people from poorer families to settle in the city came to be, when all other recources were depleted to stop poverty from becoming ever more popular. It is therefore no surprise Rotterdam was also the home of the right wing politician Pim Fortuyn, who became the first victim ever of political assassination in The Netherlands when he was killed on May 6th, 2002. There is a statue you can visit, which still regularly has flowers put underneath it.

Because Rotterdam is very near Brussels and The Hague and because it is a huge port, it has a huge expat community which has settled in this only Dutch metropole. Actually, near to 60% of the population is either non-Dutch or Dutch born abroad (allochtonen, in Dutch). The problem most of the expat community encounters is the bureaucratic way the municipality and government handles licenses, legal documentation etc. If you want to live in Rotterdam or The Netherlands be sure to learn the language as fast as you can, because there is a tendency of being less tolerant in The Netherlands. The Dutch can get very annoyed if you have lived there for a few years and still don't talk Dutch. For the expat community in Rotterdam there is website with all kinds of tips & tricks to get used to the Rotterdam way of life www.yourrotterdam.com. Furthermore you can always contact the municipality for information about living in Rotterdam. Most of the hassle above can be ignored by European Union citizens though, as they are exempt of most of the paperwork asked from other foreigners.

Come to Rotterdam for the architecture, the museums, the nightlife, a refreshing boattrip on the Meuse or just some shopping.

Delfshaven - Brewery De Pelgrim
Edit This

One of the most interesting sites of Rotterdam which is not very known because of it's distance to the city centre, is the neighbourhood of Delfshaven. Interesting because of two reasons: first of all in the centre of Delfshaven you will find a magnificent historical part, full of old warehouses and interesting public buildings. Main street is Voorhaven, where today you'll also find many sites for eating and dining. Don't miss brewery De Pelgrim where they still brew the Rotterdam oldest beer!

Secondly, this neighbourhood, really shows the melting pot which is more..

Euromast
Edit This

The Euromast is a 185m high reminder for the flower fair, the “Floriade” held in 1960. It’s the symbol of Rotterdams erection from the ashes of the bombardment and the modern future the city awaits. H.A. Maaskant was the name of the designer, witch translates as “Side of the Meuse”. The original tower reached 100 meter into the air. At a height of 60 meter it has a panoramic restaurant from were you have a beautiful view over Rotterdam. It was to be the tallest building in the Netherlands, but just ten years later found itself beaten by new arrivals. This is why it was more..

This museum offers an extensive collection ranging from medieval religious painting to modern Italian design. There’s a lovely collection of late nineteenth and early twentieth century furniture, some excellent glasswork and really interesting modern art of the seventies and eighties. Special interest also deserves the collection of modern photography with a work by Jeff Wall as a highlight. From the renewed pavilion by the architect Hubert Jan Henket you have a great view at the garden with sculptures.

Laurens Kerk

The St Laurence church is one of few buildings in the centre of Rotterdam that survived the WO-II bombardment. It suffered severe damage and had to be partly rebuild, but it’s still standing. This rebuilding was finished in 1968. The church dates back to the first half of the 16th century (1525) and replaces an earlier church. It’s build in a typically Dutch fashion with gothic shapes made in brick. Just the top of the 64 meters rising tower and the window and doorframing are made of stone. Chrysler C300 in Rotterdam

Chrysler C300 in Rotterdam

www.TaxiRotterdam.com
In the plans for the rebuilding of Rotterdam there's been a lot of attention for transport. Rotterdam was to be a city with separated areas for offices, industry and living. The plan therefore incorporated broad motorways, bicycle paths and pedestrian areas. Even today the centre is very accessible, though parking space is becoming more and more of a problem. There are three public transport options: trams, busses and subways. A taxicab can be hailed if the sign is not lit or at a taxistand.

Taxis are rather expensive in the Netherlands; Rotterdam is no exception.
Unlike in most other Dutch cities, where you're not supposed to hail cabs, but find yourself a taxi stand instead and call from there, in Rotterdam you can also hail one when the sign on the roof is lit.
Most cafes and restaurants will also be happy to call you a taxi when you're leaving, just ask.
Rotterdamse Taxi Centrale RTC is a former monopolist. Taxi Rotterdam is a more recent competitor and seems to be slightly cheaper.
RTC offers an Airport-Taxi Direct online calculator more..

When you are visiting Rotterdam you can also choose to travel by car, although it isn't a very fast way of traveling here. You are likely to get in a traffic jam because the roads are often busy, especially around the centre.

Within the ring road of Rotterdam you'll have to pay for parking on nearly all streets, even the smaller streets far way from city centre. The best way to travel into Rotterdam is by public transport, f.e. by train or subway.

___________Getting There
Edit This
There are many ways to reach Rotterdam.

By air
Rotterdam's airport is located just north of the city. It is mainly used by low-cost carriers and charter airlines. Bus 33 takes passengers to and from Central Station. For passengers travelling to Amsterdam, Delft and The Hague there is also a shuttle bus.

By train
Rotterdam Central Station is a major hub in the Dutch railway's network.
There are 6 direct connections to Amsterdam every hour (travel time approx. 1:00 hr), 8 to The Hague (travel time 15 minutes) , 5 to Utrecht (45 minutes) and 6 to Dordrecht/Breda/Roosendaal.

The international train from Brussels (travel time 1:50 hrs) also stops in Rotterdam twice an hour, as does the Thalys high speed train from Paris (travel time: 3:10 hrs)
For more information: www.ns.nl

By coach
The Eurolines bus stops at Kruisplein, directly in front of Central Station, across the street. the office is located in the Groothandelsgebouw, the low(er) building next to the station.

By car
Rotterdam has excellent road connections in all directions, although they do experience frequent traffic jams during rush hour.

By boat
The ferry port is located in Hook of Holland. Stena Line and P&O offer many daily connections to Harwich and Hull. The ferry terminal can be reached from CS by train.

The Schielandshuis is the Historical Museum of Rotterdam. It has permanent as well as temporary exhibitions about the history of the city. The level of the exhibitions is quite high with many pieces of art, objects from the daily life and a very broad range of themes, very much in the (extremely) open minded spirit of Rotterdam. Amazingly and despite the fact that the house build in 1662 is standing in the middle of the part of the city most heavily bombed in 1940, it is absolutely intact. The museum has also a restaurant inside, partly open on a gorgious little more..

***********Rotterdam******

ARCHITETTURA MODERNA

Numerose piste ciclabili sono state tracciate, in totale circa 15.000 chilometri.

I TOUR ORGANIZZATI

L’Olanda a piedi

É bello vivere a Maastricht
