It's difficult to talk about Prince Edward Island (PEI) without mentioning the story of Anne of Green Gables.

Author Lucy Montgomery tells a wonderful tale of a girl growing up in the Green Gables area of PEI. This area, now the Island's most popular tourist attraction, is home to the Green Gables House.

The provincial capital is Charlottetown, a "must see" destination. The Confederation Centre of the Arts is well worth a visit.

The Confederation Bridge is the link between the Island and Canada's mainland (at New Brunswick). It was completed in 1997 to increase access to the province. So far it has been a huge success. The bridge is almost 13 km long and takes about 12 minutes to drive across.

Be sure to visit the superb beaches. Try Prince Edward Island mussels, an Atlantic Canadian dietary staple sought after everywhere else in the country as a great delicacy. - just add melted garlic butter!

Prince Edward Island National Park preserves a coastal area along the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The park area features sand dunes, red sandstone cliffs, and 40 kilometres of salt-water beaches. The famous Green Gables House from L.M. Montgomery's classic novel Anne of Green Gables is located in the park. For more information, and a picture tour of park features, visit Prince Edward Island National Park.

Confederation Centre of the Arts

Charlottetown is the capital of the province of Prince Edward Island. A small city of about 35,000 residents in a largely rural province, Charlottetown has an uncommonly diverse collection of resources and facilities -- shopping, dining, culture, sports -- for a city of its size. On "the Island," it is only in Charlottetown that you will find a Thai restaurant, a Taiwanese tea house, national chains' local outlets, and a national arts centre.

History

Charlottetown is extremely proud of its very special place in history as the "The Birthplace of Confederation," for it was where the first meeting of the "Fathers of Confederation" was held. These meetings led to the creation of the modern Canada in 1867; ironically, Prince Edward Island itself didn't join the new country until 1873.

The City of Charlottetown, named in honour of Queen Charlotte of England, was incorporated as a city in 1855 and celebrates its 150 anniversary in 2005.

City Layout

The four large squares included in surveyor Samuel Holland’s original late-1700s layout of Charlottetown still exist to this day: Hillsborough Square, Connaught Square, Rochford Square and Kings Square form four corners of a rectangular plan at the centre of which is Province House, the seat of the provincial Legislative Assembly, and the nominal centre of the city.

________Getting There
Edit This
By Air

Charlottetown's airport is located only 5 minutes from the centre of the city, and is served with scheduled service by Air Canada (and the regional Air Canada Jazz) and JetsGo, and chartered service by Prince Edward Air. There are are general aviation facilities.

By Road

Charlottetown is near the geographical centre of Prince Edward Island, almost equidistant (about an hour's drive) from the Confederation Bridge (from New Brunswick) and the Northumberland Ferries terminal at Wood Islands (with seasonal ferries to Nova Scotia).

Naufrage is real PEI. Quiet farm country bordered by clear oceans and red beaches.

Naufrage is a quiet peaceful bayside village on Prince Edward Island. Naufrage, an unincorporated area, is located the in Kings County portion of the Island, Northeast. of St. Peters. In the morning you can watch the seals swimming in the ocean.

The family will enjoy scenic hikes and nature trails in the park, which also has a playground. There is also a historic lighthouse, which is open to public viewing. The family will also enjoy the beach and the bay being right outside the door. The village is also close to a new preservation area, which has an incredible boardwalk.

Goose River

Home to just over sixty people, Goose River is what some would call your average community on Prince Edward Island. Located just fifteen minutes from the world famous Greenwich National Park, Goose River is also a great destination for visiting golfers. It is less than a half an hour away from seven golf courses, including the Links at Crowbush Cove, Dundarave Golf Course, Brudenell Golf Course, and for those who aren't familiar with the game, there's the Canadian Golf Academy, also just half an hour from Goose River. Goose River is also home to some breathtaking views at sunset on our beaches.
