| Póvoa de Varzim Travel Guide Edit This The best resource for sights, hotels, restaurants, bars, what to do and see photo Situated 30 km north of Oporto, Póvoa de Varzim is both a traditional fishing town and cosmopolitan summer resort for the people of northern Portugal. At one end is the port and picturesque fishermen's quarter, where the men arrange their brightly-painted boats and the womenfolk quietly sit mending their husbands' nets. The northern end of Póvoa is a lively mix of beach-side cafés, water slides, discotheques, bars, restaurants, tennis courts, quality hotels and a 1930's classy newly-renovated casino. The town's 2-km-wide expanse of sandy beach is ideal for bathing, surfing and most other kinds of water sports. What to see: A small 18th-century fort guards Póvoa de Varzim's busy harbour. The town's parish church was built between 1743 and 1757, while the peculiar church of Nossa Senhora da Lapa dates back to 1772. The best place to watch people go by, to stroll or simply relax, is 'Passeio Alegre', a beach pavement and square with dozens of entertainment areas and outdoor cafés. Here, you’ll find the casino, nightclubs, trendy pubs, cafés and bars. Nearby is 'Rua da Junqueira', a traditional shopping street. While in this busy small city, it is also one of the safest and trendiest cities in the metro areas in Portugal. Nearby: The elegant 12th-century church of São Pedro at Rates, 15 km north-east of Póvoa de Varzim, is considered one of the best-preserved examples of Romanesque architecture in Portugal. The two hills which protect Póvoa de Varzim by the east, just outside the urban area: São Félix Hill and Cividade Hill. In Cividade Hill there's the 3000 year-old hillfort city ruins known as Cividade de Terroso, origin of Póvoa de Varzim. 3 km south of Póvoa de Varzim lies the smaller and lesser-known town of Vila do Conde, a peaceful place reputed for its lace and pasteis de Santa Clara sweet cakes. ________Getting There Edit This Porto's Sá Carneiro Airport (OPO) is only about 15 minutes from the heart of the city of Póvoa de Varzim and is served by a rail line of Porto Metro that ends at the airport. Trains leave about every 20 minuties throughout the day and all head to Porto centre. To reach Póvoa, you must catch a new metro in Verdes station (just two minutes, or two stations away), and use the eastern most platform of that station and wait for a line B metro, all of them have terminus in Póvoa de Varzim station. there are four metros each hour, one of those is 'Expresso', it means it doesn't stop in several stations, meaning that a trip to Póvoa is faster. Trip from Verdes station take 32 minutes and by 'Expresso' it takes only 23. In the airport you must buy an Andante rechargeable fair (50 cents). To travel to Póvoa de Varzim you must charge it with 3 zones that will cost you just around 1 euro. By car, you can reach the city from Vigo in Spain or Porto using the toll-free A28 Motorway. The city also has other motorways linking it to other interesting near-by cities, to travel to or from Guimarães one should use the A7, to or from Braga you should use the A11. A11 and A7 have intersections in the A28. By the sea, Póvoa de Varzim is one of the Portuguese maritime borders, there's a Marina and a seaport in Póvoa. Coordinates: 41°22'N, 8°46'W There are buses that regularly link the city to/from Porto, Galicia, shuttle buses to/from Lisbon and there are also the Euroline - the European wide-bus service. All use the Central de Camionagem, the central bus station of the city, close to the beach area. And there are city mini-buses from Litoral Norte that you can catch to head to another places or you can also use another bus systems (such as Linhares) to travel around the city or the countryside. ______Museums Edit This Museums in Póvoa de Varzim [Add Museum] Museu de Etnografia e História Edit This Póvoa de Varzim ethnographic museum over the rich and unique fishing history and culture of Póvoa de Varzim in a historic noblesmen's home. To the east the historic cities of Braga and Guimaraes, to the south Porto and the Douro valley. [Add Day Trip] São Pedro de Rates - countryside with history and legends Edit This A small historic and picturesque town that belongs to Póvoa de Varzim, Rates is located 14 km from the city centre and is a great place to relax and enjoy the countryside. Consider doing its ecomuseu route along the town, get to know its legendary fountains and myths, its park and don't forget to visit the Rates Romanesque Church, for some impressive medieval stonework and get in touch with the legend surrounding it by visiting the church's museum. World66 rating: [rate it] Porto Edit This Visiting Porto from Póvoa de Varzim is as easy as buying a metro ticket and enjoying the ride to the historic centre of Porto, a world heritage site. Travel time using the express metro is about 49 minutes, but it takes about one hour on a normal one. By motorway, you should simply use the A28 motorway, it ends in Porto and it takes less than 30 minutes to reach the city located less than 28 km away. It may take some more time, if using the light metro system, but it a comfortable, cheap and useful way of travel and used by many more.. Both towns are linked by an excellent waterfront pavement, with bicycle path. Consider renting a bicycle, in the summer months it is pretty easy to do so, and enjoy the ride to the historic town centre of Vila do Conde, about 3 km from the Póvoa de Varzim city centre (5 km from some hotels). Vila do Conde town centre is a peaceful and placid riverside district dating back to the discovery age or earlier. If bicycle is not your thing, then more.. [Add Beach] Salgueira Beach Edit This Salgueira Beach is Passeio Alegre's north end beach and it is a regional classic surfing beach, near the beach there's several swimming pool complexes, restaurants, bullring, etc. In the beach you can find beach bars and Buddha nightclub. For flirting the best beaches are the quiet rocky beaches north of the city, namely Quião Beach (Praia do Quião). This quiet beach, with small grains of sand, is located just south of Estalagem de Santo André, an inn located in the Santo André Cape.
