Agios Georgios ( St.Georges Bay )

Agios Georgios ( St.Georges Bay )

Natalie Bryan

With its population of only 27,000 inhabitants Paphos is the capital of Cyprus' western region. Most of the inhabitants work as employees in various branches of tourism, because there is not much industry.

Paphos consists of two areas: the coastal resort area (Kato Paphos) and the town itself (Pano Paphos) which is slightly inland.

Paphos is very popular with tourists, and especially with English, German and Scandinavian tourists. Among its attractions are its ancient mosaic floors, its beautiful old harbour, its modern hotels and restaurants, situated along the seaside promenade.Other sights include an archaeological museum, the Byzantine castle of Paphos, the Tombs of the Kings, St. Paul’s Pillar and the Temple of Aphrodite (the goddess of love and beauty).

The climate of Cyprus makes the summer months a popular time for tourism in Paphos, when temperatures reach easilly into the mid 30 degrees celcius every day. However the cooler winter months make walking and cycling ideal activities, especially further away in the mountains.

The main shopping lane, which runs parallel to the beach promenade, is the ideal tourists' marketplace.

Paphos is one of the main tourist spots in Cyprus. The sun shines all day long in the radiant town. There are many hotels both big and small for tourists to stay in, with kindly staff who will be happy to help you with your every need.

Located in Paphos is the gorgeous Coral Bay, a beauteous beach with soft sand and deep blue water, a perfect place for water sports.

In Lower Paphos you will find a couple of sights that led you through the various ages of Cyprus' history: roman buildings, a Byzantine palace, Christian churches, a Frankish bath and Turkish castle architecture. Upper Paphos (Ktima) was once the burial grounds for New Paphos. Three small, but very interesting museums are located there (see museums)

About 2 miles northwards of the Old Harbour you will find the Tombs of the Kings. The tombs are impressive enough to be worthy of kings. They are burial caves carved into the bedrock of the hill and decorated with Doric columns and capitals; they date from the 4th century BC. You can freely walk about the place once inside, searching through the rooms of the tombs, with parts underground carved into the rock.

_________History
Edit This
New Paphos (Nea Paphos)

New Paphos is eight miles westwards of Old Paphos, which was destroyed by an earthquake in the 12th century BC, It was founded in 4th century BC. At first it was only a small village but with the decline of Salamis it became the capital of western Cyprus.

When St. Paul brought the message of Christ to Cyprus (45 AD) he was lashed and imprisoned in Paphos. The city was destroyed twice; first by a 1st century earthquake, and then in the 7th century by Arab raiders.

In the reign of the Lusignans (13th century) Paphos became a bishopric seat, but this did not prevent its people from leaving their town to seek more attractive dwellings in the neighbouring hills. Thus Ktima gradually replaced Paphos as the main regional centre.

Today Ktima is practically incorporated into Paphos itself. This is where the city administration is now located. The Leoforos Apostolou Pavlou (St. Paul) Ave. connects Ktima with New Paphos (or Lower Paphos). This is where the town's best hotels and residences, tourist beaches and archaeological sites are located.

___________Beaches
Edit This

Paphos beaches in the south coast seem quite different from those in the west. In the south they invariably have wave breakers and thus have been relatively tamed while those in the west are characterised by rougher seas. From all these beaches I would recommend Coral beach in the west as being a good all round package, well organised, wide sandy and not so rough. Kotchas is very interesting as a rougher setting and a good spot to sun bathe.

The coast of Akamas peninsula in the north west is a lot more interesting.

For in depth information on Paphos beaches, as well as other naturespots such as walking trails, dams and wetlands, etc I would invite you to explore www.natureofcyprus.org .
