Although it is not a tourist center, this city is rapidly working at re-inventing itself as one and warrants at least a day’s visit to see its attractions. The new futuristic-looking Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, devoted to modern art, is the cornerstone of a major redevelopment project of the city’s waterfront undertaken by the Basque administration. This amazing building was designed by Frank Gehry, an architect from Los Angeles, CA and one of the best contemporary architects working on this planet today. It is almost indescribable and consists of swirls clad in titanium and great panels of glass supported by steel girders and looking like an erector set for adults gone mad. The major part of the museum is covered on the exterior by titanium sheets of 2 x 3 feet and looking somewhat like scales on a fish. Much of the interior is in stone tiles of the same size and as most of the walls are curved all these tiles were laid out and cut by computer and only fit in one space. Now that's a clever way to drive up the job cost. A beautiful, beautiful project and the reason many come to Bilbao. The visitors may also enjoy seeing the Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology (Roman prehistoric and Iberian exhibits), the Bellas Artes Museum and the Museum of sea. Other places of interest in the city are the 14th-century Gothic Church of Santiago, the Old City(Casco Viejo) and Ensanche Park. Another new architectual marvel is Bilbao's Metro (subway) designed by Norman Foster. A space age mode of rapid transit straight out of a high teck science fiction vision. A quick bus or train excursion which is very popular is to the market town of Gernika, whish has great beaches and the Basque countries only Irish owned country pub Scanlan's Tavern www.bilbaodenoche.com which has the best trad sesiuns,Guinness & whiskey in the region. .:::::::.Guernika Travel Guide Edit This The best resource for sights, hotels, restaurants, bars, what to do and see Guernika is most famous for the painting by Pablo Picasso - they have a copy of it in the local museum, the original is in Madrid- but the place is very interesting for all tourists. In this rural market town in the Basque highlands the town now boasts of having Euskadi's only Irish owned country pub and Europe's only Irish whiskey bar-Scanlan's Tavern www.bilbaodenoche.com with an infusion of Basque/Irish culture "craic" will be had .Gernika is the heart of the Basque country and a visit to their famous tree is a must.Check out the towns festival in August . ___________Nightlife and Entertainment Edit This [Add Entertainment place] Scanlan´s Tavern Gernika Edit This IRISH PUB IN THE BASQUE COUNTRY. It lies in the shelter of the Monte lgueldo, Urgull and Ulía, and the river Urumea flows through the middle of it. San Sebastian is an important beach resort, but that's not all that there's to the city. The cosmopolitanism of the modern town with its large avenues and elegant tree-lined boulevards and picturesque old quarter are two important attractions. Don't miss the fishing port where excellent typical restaurants compete for business and serve excellent "Pintxos", the local Tapas. In the same quarter you find the city's two oldest churches - the Gothic Church of San Vicente and the Baroque Church of Santa María, as well as the 16th c Convent of San Telmo, converted into a museum and worthy of a visit to see its cloister and the paintings by the great Sert which decorated it. The beach of La Concha is worthy of mention, being a magical viewing point from the city out onto the Bay of Biscay, and if we add to this the Montes Urgull and lgueldo and the Island of Santa Clara, then the final result is a bay of outstanding beauty. The Cathedral del Buen Pastor, the Municipal Casino, the Auditorium and the Congress Palace are modern structures of important addition to the urban surroundings. ::::::::::::Vitoria Travel Guide Edit This The best resource for sights, hotels, restaurants, bars, what to do and see CiberQueen CiberQueen CiberQueen Vitoria is located in the heart of the Basque Country in Spain, 66 km south of Bilbao, 114 km from San Sebastian and 351 km from Madrid.
