| Nuremberg Travel Guide Edit This The best resource for sights, hotels, restaurants, bars, what to do and see x This photo was taken in July 2001 Michael Low (Ancaster, Canada) Nuremberg (Nürnberg) (pop. 494 900) founded in 1050 is an interesting mix of the quaint and the cosmopolitan. The Altstadt (Old City) is a medieval walled city with large pedestrian walkways graced by the pretty Pegnitz River. Spend the afternoon strolling the narrow streets and alleys shopping for antiques toys crafts and jewelry. At Christmastime the city’s main market turns into the famous Christkindlmarkt an open-air Christmas Market that has spawned imitators throughout Germany. The main attractions are gluhwein (warm spiced wine) and lebkuchen (similar to gingerbread). Visit the city center's three main churches (Frauenkirche St. Lorenze Kirche and St. Sebaldus Kirche) and the Albrecht Durer House where the artist lived for 20 years. Before you leave turn the gold ring at the Gothic Schoner Brunnen (Beautiful Fountain) for good luck and taste the city’s unique spicing of bratwurst. 90 mi/150 km north-northwest of Munich. Part or or all of this text stems from the original article at: deutsch ________Sights Edit This x This photo was taken in July 2001 Michael Low (Ancaster, Canada) The historical centre of Nuremberg attracts many tourists, and for good reason. While much of the city center was reduced to rubble in World War II, the city was rebuilt in a fusion of modern and medieval styles and still contains many tall, narrow half-timbered houses. The town is still surrounded by its medieval city walls built in the 15th and 16th centuries. Some of the more impressive relics are the Gothic granary built in 1498-1502, the Nassauer Haus, a Gothic tower house from the 13th century, the Heiling-Geist-Spital, a hospital founded in 1332 and expanded in 1488-1527, and the Wine House, a half-timbered house that is one of the very few buildings in the city center to survive World War II damage.
