Across the river is People's Democratic Republic of Laos . This is a good base from which to explore Isaan, the North-East of Thailand, and the only place in Isaan at which you can cross the river into neighbouring Laos by using the so-called Friendship Bridge in Nong Khai town. The scenery around Nong Khai and along the Maekhong river is very beautiful and worth checking out. Outside of Nong Khai is Wat Khaek (also known as Salaa Kaew Kuu), a zany Buddhist-Hindu scupture park worth a visit. . The city is also a good place to buy handicraft of the region and neighbouring Laos. . A slightly eccentric bar in town, The Bridge Bar, has a website with information about travelling to and from Nong Khai. This temple sports a huge collection of concrete images and statues set amongst trees and shrubs - many of them quite weird and fascinating (see picture above). Set aside a few hours to wander the grounds. Pocessing sculptures some of which are up to five stories tall, it is a very strange mix of Hinduism, Buddhism and Taoism. The Maekong River is particularly beautiful in Nong Khai and there are some exceptionally nice places to stay along its banks. The Phu Pra Bat Historical Park and hour and a half away, while technically in Udorn Province, is easiest to reach from Nong Khai and many people come here especially to see the very strange rock formations there, a place that was settled more 3500 years ago. The Taa Sadej market in the centre of town is very famous, and many Thais and foreigners come here especially to see its wonderful array of things from Laos, China, Vietnam and Thailand.
