The Curonian Spit is the peninsula dividing the Curonian Lagoon and the Baltic Sea. The Northern part, which is the biggest part of the Curonian Spit, belongs to the Republic of Lithuania. The remaining part, which includes the settlements of Pilkopa, Rasyte, Šarkuva and several others, belongs to the Kaliningrad region of the Russian Federation. In 1923 the northern part of the Curonian Spit (the area of 52 km in length) was assigned to the Republic of Lithuania. From 1939 until 1945 the entire area of the Spit was occupied by Germany. The Northern part of the peninsula was given back to Lithuania after World War II. At present, the Lithuanian part of the Spit (800 ha) is administrated by Klaipeda City Municipality; whereas the remaining part (about 25,600 ha) is subordinate to the Municipality of Neringa City.

The path to the Dead Dunes

The path to the Dead Dunes
There are lots of sights to see, especially for a nature lover, but the most-visited and the most breath-taking of them all is for sure the Great Dune aka Parnidis Dune.

A dune, more than 60 meters high seperates the Baltic Sea and the Curotian Lagoon.

This is where sand and wind cooperated and created one of the most beautiful and perfect places in the world. A lot of legends and real event happened in these dunes. Every grain of the sand in these dunes would tell a story if it could.

One such place, for example, is the Valley of Death. This valley is the place where year 1870 used to be a German camp where French prisoners of war used to be kept. And the name of the valley tells the rest of this story.

Also a very silent dip in the middle of the dunes -- Valley of Silence.

The best experience of the dunes is wandering them on foot. I like to do it barefoot.

Although, a visitor must know that not far from the dunes to the south is the Lithuanian border with the Kaliningradas District which is part of Russian Federation. Now it's EU outter border so be careful and don't go too far.

On the top of the dune there is a sun clock. Althought after a recent hurricane it has been smashed into bits.

Parnidis (translated from Lithuanian that means "near Nida") Dune is well visible from the town so you can't miss it.

One of the Sculptures

The main tourist attraction in the town of Juodkrante (the second biggest town in Neringa, the first town you will drive into if driving from Klaipeda) is of course the Hill of Witches.

A Hill of Witches (also sometimes called Jonas (John) Hill) is a tree-covered slope of the old parabolic dunes. In 1979 an exposition of wooden sculptures of ancient Lithuanian mithological creatures was opened on this hill. Nowadays it has become very popular. It's almost as much visited as the Parnidis Dune in Nida.

The exposition starts in the main street of Juodkrante and then you take more..

The Dead Dunes (also called the Gray Dunes or the Pyramidical Dunes) are one of the most fascinating sights in Neringa National Park.

These dunes are situated in the Nagliai Nature Reserve. It is highly protected and supervised. Noone can enter this Reserve. Although there is one special route, made for tourists by the Neringa goverment. Take this route and you will see what you have never seen before. There is a viewing platform in the dunes where you can look around. The Sea and the Lagoon are both seen from there. It is also possible to take a walk around these dunes. more..

The Ferry to Neringa
The Ferry to Neringa

Getting to the Neringa National Park is possible by taking a ferry in Klaipeda. The ferry takes cars, bicycles and people. The rides takes about 10-15 minutes and costs about 10EUR per car. There is also 50 km long bicycles way to Nida resort.

Also there is an 'ecological fee' when entering the official border of National Park some 5 kilometers after the ferry.

From Kaunas city fast ferry (for peoples only) reaches Neringa in 4 hours. The travel is perfect and relaxing. It takes approx. 3 hours by Nemunas river and 1 hour by Curonian lagoon. Tickets more..

___________-Beaches
Edit This
The Sea is very important to Lithuanians. Every Lithuanian respects the Sea.

The Baltic Sea actually is very very beautiful. Sandy beaches are guaranteed. In most summer months -- big waves too. Although, wind surfing it's very popular in Lithuania. If you'd like to surf, you probably should bring your own equipment. The beach is about 50 meters wide. Behind the beach, there's everywhere a small dune which was made by humans in order to protect themselves and the forest behind from the furious sea storm which are quite frequent especially in winter and autumn.

Be aware, that there are always two and sometimes even three types of beaches in Nida and whole Neringa. That is a public beach where everyone is welcome anytime and there are 'Women Only' beaches. That means that men are not welcome and not allowed in there. Also you might find a 'Men Only' beach. There is one in Smiltyne, I think. Also there's one beach for nudists, if I remember it correctly. That's far to the east near the border line with Kaliningrad District.

These beaches are always signed with specific signs.

So you have to be attentive and look which type of beach you are going to.
