Nazca lies 450km south of Lima. Max Uhle, a German archaeologist excavated in the beginning of the twentiest century. You can see some of the mummies in a sort of scary setting, but most people come for the lines, which were from 1939 to 1998 studied by Maria Reiche, another German scientist. Even though the real purpose of these masterworks of ancient technology and art is until today not clear.

Nazca and the flights over the lines can be pretty annoying during highseason (July and August). The practice at the airport is: who pais more gets in first. So it may be, that you have a reservation for a certain time, someone else offers more money and your company tells you, that your flight has been canceled. To avoid this the best is to come not in these two month, prices fall in low season down to 25-30$ instead of 50-65$. Try to book directly at the airlines rather than a tour agency or even better book a package (transport, flight, hotel, cemetery etc.) from another town, which is often even cheaper.
Note: You should not eat derictcly before you take the flight. The pilots are very kind and want to show each passenger (on left and on the right site of the plane) the figures. Therefor the trip becomes a ride on a roller coaster. Anyhow nobody should miss this experience! The lines are stunning from above.

Out of the Grey

The Nasca Lines in the Ingenio Valley are the main reason why most people visit the town of Nasca. The famous lines were etched onto the surface of the desert, probably between 1500 and 2000 years ago. The technique was to remove large dark-colored stones and expose the lighter patches just below the surface. The lines depict not only parallels and geometrical patterns, but also animals, fish and birds, as well as more abstract figures ranging in size from about 300 ft/90 m to several miles/kilometers in length.

Because the designs can only be seen clearly from the air, the artists never had the chance to see their completed works. Getting to see the lines means flying in a small plane seating 4 to 10 persons. Unfortunately the small planes can be rather hard on the stomach, so if you have an inclination to air sickness, eat afterwards or carry your lunch in a bag home. There is also a small tower next to the Pan-American Highway, which allows views of a couple of the lines.

Also there are some very interesting pre-Columbian cemeteries close to town, which looters have dug up, looking for artifacts. The desert is strewn with bones, pottery shards and pieces of ancient ceramics. A few intact mummies can also be found there, sitting exposed in the desert.

A few kilometers away, the site of Kahuachi, the capital of the ancient Nasca culture, was similarly "excavated" by looters.

Pampas Galeras Vicuņa Reserve
Edit This

The Vicuņa National Park of Pampas Galeras is located about 90 kilometres from the city of Nasca (598 m.a.s.l), following a steep/winding road that leads high into the Andes till an elevation of 4200 m.a.s.l. This area is home of two American camels, the Vicuņas and Guanacos, which can be seen running freely through the Andean plateau. Unlike their cousins the Llamas and Alpacas, the Vicuņas and Guanacos are wild animals, they have not been domesticated and have adapted to high altitudes where drought and freezing nights are the natural rules. The Vicuņa Reserve of Pampas more..

__________Getting There
Edit This
For a lot of visitors, Nazca is where the Panamerica highway begins or ends. Arequipa somewhat in the mountains is 9 hours away. Cuzco anything from 24 to 40 hours. The other way, you could go to Ica in three hours or continue to Pisco in another hour, or sit until to Peru.

_________Museums
Edit This
When you visit the city of Nazca, we highly recommend you to visit the Museum Antonini, located just few blocks from down town. The Antonini museum displays ancient remains from the Nazca Culture found at the archaeological site of Cahuachi. For over 20 years Italian Archaeologist Giusepe Orefeci has been working at this ceremonial site and has found several interesting remains, including well preserve mummies, colorful ceramics, textiles, weapons, and many other relics, which can be seen at the museum. At the site archaeologists also have found the rest of great pyramyds and temples, which are being reconstructed today. Cahuachi is very important, as this was the ancient capital of the Nazca culture, the people who are credited for the creation of the Nazca Lines. Archaelogist are pretty sure that the key to solve the mystery of the Nazca Lines lies under the temples of Cahuachi. Don't miss this museum if you are in Nazca.

We recommend also to visit this little museum, located near the desert, where the Nazca Lines were made. This was the place that housed Dra. Maria Reiche for many years, from here she used to leave every day to the desert in order to study the Nazca Lines and figures. Maria Reiche dedicated over 50 years of her life to study, protec and measure the Nazca Lines. At the little museum you will be able to see Maria's recihe pictures , including her all maerial work she used when alive. She died in 1998, and her grave lies at the museum.
