The Republic of Montenegro is a country in the Balkans, on the Adriatic Sea. It borders Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina to the west, Serbia and the Serbian province of Kosovo to the north, and Albania to the east. To the south of Montenegro is the Adriatic Sea, across which lies Italy.

Montenegro's tourism had suffered greatly from unrests and wars in surrounding countries in the 1990s, as Balkans had been considered generally unsafe by tourists from the west. In recent years, along with the stabilized situation in the region, tourism in Montenegro began to recover, and Montenegro is being re-discovered by tourists from around the globe.

Above Kotor

Kevin Greek
Located in the south on the Adriatic the Bay of Kotor is one of the nicest areas to visit in Montenegro. For centuries this bay was the boundary between Christianity and Islam.

Today the bay is lined with numerous beaches, several tourist resorts and a few historical sites. The most important attractions in the area are Kotor, Risan with its fortress, the Island of Flowers near Tivat and the monasteries of Petrovac.

If you can stand to drive (warning: it isn't for the nervous) then try going down to Sveti Stefan and the magical area which contains two famous hotels owned by Milocer. Sveti Stefan is contained on an island outcrop and is a former fishing village which in the 60's was a hedonistic destination for the likes of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. Please don't try staying there (way too expensive) but risk the 7 euro entry and enjoy some home made lemonade on the hotel island in a beautiful little cafe bar and dream for a while!

What ever you do DON'T travel inland to the capital or around the interior. The roads are just not up to it and you can only average 40km/h which means a short journey takes many hours. There isn't all that much to see to be honest and if you have purchased the only English guide to Monte Negro by Brandt ask yourself if the author has ever visited the place because I don't think they ever have!

This is one of Europe's final backwaters. Beautiful, rugged but somewhere you'll either love or be keen to escape back to creature comforts.

Others may disagree with this viewpoint. Take the mountain road from Kotor to Cetinje for views that you will never forget. Drive on to the Durmitor National Park and the scenery both there and en route is truly stunning! The people you can meet are unbelievably helpful.

Budva

Budva

Jason Maguire Dublin
Budva is quite a popular resort town on the coast of Montenegro. It has good beaches, beautiful walking tracks and a little inviting island (Sveti Stefan) just down the coast. Although the town was struck seriously by an earthquake in 1979, its old city core from some 2500 years ago, remained fairly intact. At present, the old stage is still used for the annual summer theatre festival and because it became the biggest open-air festival in former Yuguslavia, the city is also better known as 'the theatre city of Budva'.

Cetinje, one of main streets

Svetlana Tikhonova
For many years Cetinje was capital of Montenegro (see section History). Now Cetinje is small sleeping (somebody could say "dead") town. Many buildings looks like nobody lives there. It is still considered "the second capital" of Montenegro and the President of new state made his residence here.

Dormitor National Park

Dormitor National Park

Dormitor National park located in the north of Montenegro.

Situated about 80km north of the capital, Dormitor national park is located in Montenegro's ski resort.
There are a number of hotels in the area.

Dormitor itself is an outstanding park traversed by the Drina river which seperates Montenegro from it's Balkan neighbour through the Tara gorge.

Zabljak is located near the entrance to the park. Here there is some soviet style accommodations and a number of cheap caf?s.

Once in the park, a good meal can be had at the restaurant housed in a log-hut overlooking the 'black-lake'.

There are many lakes and walks signposted.

It's advisable to supply your own map unless you have a good knowledge of cyrillic, you may find yourself getting lost.
There have been a number of deaths in the mountains due to adverse weather conditions.

Make sure you bring your camera. The scenery is second to none, surpassing anything else available in Montenegro.

Herceg Novi

Herceg Novi

Svetlana Tikhonova
Herceg Novi is located close to the border with Bosnia Herzegovina and Croatia, some 70 km by road west of Podgorica the capital of Montenegro. Just north of the Bay of Kotor the strategical position of Herceg Novi gave the city its importance. Hardly surprising that the main sights are the city gates and some fortresses. You may also want to have a look at the church and the monastery of Savina.

During summer tourist season you can enjoy great nightlife in Herceg Novi. This town has a lot of interesting dance nightclubs, cafes and restaurants located by the sea, or placed on beautiful old fortresses.
A visit to Herceg Novi can be combined with Perast and Kotor.

Kotor's old town viewed from the mountain over it

Svetlana Tikhonova

Kotor is an ancient town in the middle of an enormous bay which will take a long time to drive around. The old town is very pretty with its city walls (with an open air cinema on top of it!), lots of churches and old buildings from Byzantine and other cultures, and a large number of places to eat and have a coffee.

Under the city walls you can find a market with all sorts of great local produce from fish over wonderful dried figs or mushrooms, to olives in all tastes. Tasty!

Along the bay there are a lot of restaurants, bars and hotels.

Perast

metoni
Possibly the most beaufitul hamlet on Kotor Bay. Perast has two islands offshore containing monastories. Nice local cafes and local boats take you to the islands. Very picture postcard and a recommended stop off but really not enough here to spend more than a couple of hours.

Nightview of Downtown
Podgorica, situated on the banks of six rivers, is developing the characteristics of a modern European city. It is the metropolitan and administrative center of Montenegro. After looking at its new buildings, a visitor may think the city has just appeared on the banks of the Moraca, Ribnica, Zeta, Sitnica, Mareza and Cijevna rivers. Behind the modern city you can easily notice the signs of a long tradition. Just walk down any street in the city center, like Bokeska, Hercegovacka or Njegoseva Street.

Two thousand years ago, at the mouth of the rivers Ribnica and Moraca, there was the Illyrian and Roman town of Birziminium. Where the Zeta river merges with the Moraca river lies the remains of beautiful Duklja, an attractive archeological excavation site. In 1326 Podgorica was named after the hill Gorica, which was settled in the north part of the city. From 1946 until 1990 it was officially called Titograd. One sees the best picture of old Podgorica while visiting the settlement of Varos. It is dominated by the high stone Sat-kula (Clock-tower), which is like a lighthouse and is another symbol of the city.

Podgorica is located at 44 meters above sea level, and only a hundred kilometers away from the famous coast resorts and the very attractive winter tourist center on Bjelasica. In only a two-hour drive, water skiing can be replaced by skiing on snow! Not far away from the city is Scadar lake, which together with the sunny Zetska valley is a real garden of heaven. The climate provides excellent wines, like Vranac and Procorden as well as the excellent rakija or grape brandy, called “water of life”.

Comfortable guest accommodations include the hotels Crna Gora”, “Podgorica”, “Ljubovic” and “Zlatica”, as well as numerous small, private hotels in and near the town. As an open trade center, Podgorica offers a large variety of first-class imported clothes, primarily from Italy. While shopping you can visit some of the restaurants in Podgorica where you can try some of the traditional meals. You can also visit one of the galleries, theaters, museums, and archives. In a city of close to 200 thousand inhabitans, a visitor can quickly feel the hospitality of this pro-European metropolis.

photo
This is the main tourist resort in Montenegro consisting of two luxury hotels and many surrounding lesser accommodations. Many English visitors stay here and once you've visited you can see why. White shingle and pebble beaches with crystal blue sea, backed by a shaded promenade with fantastic little cafes that are filled with the dodgy sound of "Balkan" Euro pop! For the first time in many years, I truly felt I could spend a weeklong beach holiday somewhere, that somewhere being Sveti Stefan.

Since 2007 the Island of Sveti Stefani has been in private hands and no longer open to visitors.

Ulcinj

Lage von Ulcinj in Montenegro Ulcinj , alb. Ulqin/Ulqini, italien. Dulcigno) ist die südlichste Stadt Montenegros und liegt an der Adria nahe der Grenze zu Albanien. In Ulcinj leben 30.000 mehrheitlich albanisch sprechende Einwohner.

Plazi i vogel / serb.

Plazhi i madh / serb.
