Watching the sun rise or set over the sand dunes of Merzouga may be the most spectacular experience you have on your trip to Morocco. The Erg Chebbi, the name of these sand dunes, is said to have some of the highest dunes in Morocco about 160 m alt. Indeed, the dunes and the desert wildlife are impressive. Merzouga is an excellent base from which to explore the desert and bird-watchers will be enthralled with what they see. In spring, a lake (SERJI) forms near Merzouga which attracts pink flamingos. Other rare birds stop here during spring migration. The desert is also the year round environment for many desert reptiles and mammals.

A camel trip, for a couple hours, is a great way to see the dunes. For those who are used to getting saddle-sore, or are up for the ultimate adventure, there are two to ten days desert tours on camel. You won’t have to look hard for a guide, it’s better to ask the management at your hotel for a reliable one.SAHARA is one of the best adresses to be recommanded. Guides are much more agressive in this part of Morocco. Seeing the sun set over the dunes is worth it though.

Taking an overnight excursion over the dunes is even better. You see waves and waves of sand dunes at sunset as you ride your camel.. In the morning, you watch the sunrise from Algeria border as it catches the dunes..... Campfire dinner cannot be better..

There is asphalt road to Merzouga, you go over good raod that are very well marked if you leave from Rissani.but if you leave from erfoud and planing to do some piste It’s recommended to travel in a land-rover or any other 4WD and take a very good map of the area. You can also get there from Rissani by taking a taxi .

Your jumping off point is Marrakesh. From there you can either hire a car and drive or head off to Ouazarzate by bus where you can arrange a tour or carry on your journey by public transport. Now while the public transport option is feasible, you've got to no way of knowing when you'll be arriving or coming back which is a problem if you are on a tight schedule or have hotels booked. Also, the tour or bus option means you don't get to stop off along the way to see and do what you want at your own pace. My advice - hire a car.

The journey is wonderful. Start off early more..

Air Flights to Ouarzazate and Errachadia
Edit This

There are daily flights from casablanca to Ouarzazte arriving at midnight. Best spend the night in Ouarzazate and travel 5 hours to Merzouga. Of course, this is for those who have little time- as you miss the spectacular views of the High Atlas Mountains on the way by car from Marrakech.

Great to have private transport so you can see Todra Grge and dades valley on the way after you leave Ouarzazate.

There are also weekly flights from Errachadia which is 2 hours away but then you must arrange transport as onr does not rent a car in Errachadia. There more..

The dunes of the erg Chebbi constitute the great curiosity of the area. They are real moving sculptures in the form of draperies, whose colors vary according to the intensity of the light.
They are drawn up like alive walls in the doors of the desert (40 km of the border of Algeria). Highest reach 160 m.
Superb sunset and sunrise to see from the terrasse of hotel SAHARA. It is advised to spend the night under tents (hairs of goat and dromedary) of nomads located at the midle of the dunes after about 2 hours camel riding from your hotel.
