Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Travel Guide
Edit This The best resource for sights, hotels, restaurants, bars, what to do and see

Mecklenburg - Western Pomerania is located in northeast Germany. Although the landscape is magnificent with hills, lake country and fine sandy beaches and dunes, the northern region of Germany, Mecklenburg - Western Pomerania, is not very known by most of the tourists from abroad. Approximately 1.8 million residents live in its 23.170 square km area, making it the most thinly populated state in Germany (79 inhabitants per square km). Many inhabitants live in or around the bigger cities of Rostock, Schwerin, Stralsund and Wismar. These cities have all a history rich in tradition and charming historic town centres.

"Mecklenburg-Vorpommern" (in German) has a maritime flair. Its 1.712 km coastline, with 354 km of outer coast, is the longest of any German state. With the natural beauty of its varied coastline, its multitude of lakes, and its beautiful forests and fields, Mecklenburg - Western Pomerania will soon become one of the most attractive tourist destinations in Germany. Rugen - Germany's biggest island - was and still is a beautiful and very charming bath with sandy, mediterranean beaches and recreation resorts. All around you will find the fascinating bath architecture of the 19th century, when the island was the first summer holiday address for the German upper class.

Along the Baltic Sea coastline you will find less crowded but maybe even nicer Sea Baths like Fischland, Darss, Zingst, Warnemunde or Prerow. However, Mecklenburg is not alone a land of the sea, but also the a land of lakes. The largest lake in the state and all of Germany is the "Müritzsee" with an area of 110 square km.

With its 68 000 residents it is now the third largest city in Mecklenburg - Vorpommern.
The New Gate dates from the 15th century and its three somewhat older, red brick companions lent Neubrandenburg its sobriquet of "The City of Four Gates". The four ornate edifices are unique examples of North German Gothic brick architecture and are notable in Europe. They represent part of a mediaeval fortification consisting of well preserved city walls, turrets, watchtowers, moats and stately old oaks. For many centuries this 2300 metre long stronghold embraced the urban community which was founded in 1248 by Herbord von Raven. Legend has it that the image of an Italian city persisted in his mind's eye as he gave instructions for his plan of a circular layout with a near symmetrical grid of streets. This basic structure has been preserved to this day and only during the last three decades has Neubrandenburg outgrown this nucleus of a city. Now there are new housing estates in the hills around the city and the number of residents has increased sharply.

From a cultural point of view, Neubrandenburg has a lot to offer. Firstly, there is St. Mary's church. In addition to the four gates, St. Mary's church with its high spire is the most visible symbol of Neubrandenburg for miles around. It was ceremoniously consecrated in 1298. As a result of damage caused by wars and the passage of time, the Neustrelitz court architect, Friedrich Wilhelm Büttel, a pupil of the famous architect Schinkel, restored the church in neo-Gothic style in the middle of the 19th century.

Also the Second World War left its traces on this important historical monument. Only the outer walls and parts of the tower remained undamaged.

In 1996 the announcement of an international architectural competition was made, which planned to convert St. Mary's church into a concert hall. The winning plan of an architect from Helsinki was implemented. The concert church of Neubrandenburg was opened ceremoniously in July 2001. It is the home of the Neubrandenburg Philharmonic Orchestra. Famous national and international artists perform here. The city also supports its other cultural institutions such as the regional library, regional museum, art collection and congress center. It is also well worth attending the performances given by the Theater and Orchestra GmbH Neubrandenburg/Neustrelitz. The Neubrandenburg Theater is the oldest in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

Sport is also very important in the city besides culture. Olympic, world and European champions come from Neubrandenburg and have carried the name of their city to all corners of the earth. These include Astrid Kumbernuss, Franka Dietzsch, Andreas Dittmer, Thomas Zereske, Anja Dittmer and Stefan Uteß. Leisure time and popular sport also has its permanent place in Neubrandenburg. Over ten thousand adults, children and youth go in for sport at 65 sports clubs.
Trollenhagen Airport is significant for the development of Neubrandenburg as a major hub of the region with a number of regional authorities. It is only ten minutes by car from the city center. The city has invested in large projects as new industrial locations on about 200 hectares so that the citizens of Neubrandenburg can also find work locally. Fortunately, these areas are " almost fully taken".

Another advantage of Neubrandenburg is also its close proximity to Lake Tollense. The lake, which is eleven kilometers long and almost three kilometers wide, is nestled in an idyllic forest and hilly countryside. A lot of things have taken place on the lake where Theodor Fontäne would have had his pleasure. The poet repeatedly sought rest and relaxation on its shores. The restructured swimming areas attract swimmers and strollers alike. The 37-kilometer long cycling track around Lake Tollense is particularly popular with natives and guests, too. A passenger boat cruises over its waves in the summer. But you can also see the canoeists of the sports club training here or oarsman and surfers, who look for sporting relaxation in their leisure time.

Neubrandenburg is also a city of high technology.

Panorama of Rostock

Panorama of Rostock

Lauchi
Rostock is the largest city in Mecklenburg-West Pomerania, located in north-east Germany. With its 200.000 inhabitants the city is both an administrative and business centre and as well the centre of the holiday area among the German coastline of the Baltic Sea. The historical city centre of the former member of the Hanseatic League is dominated by old towers and fortifications, gabled houses and warehouse buildings and lovely churches and abbeys, most of them Gothic. Despite its nearly 800-year-old history the old university city of Rostock on the Baltic coast is a very modern town. The attractive seaside resort of Warnemunde also belongs to Rostock. With a lovely broad white sandy beach and everything else you need for an unforgetable holiday.

Among the sights of Rostock the St. Marien Church (Gothic basilica with some fine works of art) should not be missed. If you have some time left, have a look at the Holy Cross Abbey (Gothic Cistercian nunnery, est. 1270, now houses the Cultural History Museum), the St. Petri Church (Gothic basilica, 13th century, with 117m spire) and the Town Hall, with a magnificent Gothic facade and 7 towers.

Daytrips can be made to Bad Kreuznach, 15km west of Rostock. Worth seeing is also the magnificent cathedral and "Molli" narrow-gauge railway to Heiligendamm, Germany's oldest seaside resort. The city of Güstrow, 50km south of Rostock, houses a Renaissance palace, a cathedral and the studio of the sculptor Ernst Barlach.

Schweriner Schloss

Schweriner Schloss

Ardion Beldad
Schwerin is the second largest city in "Mecklenburg-Vorpommern" and also the old residential seat of the Grand Dukes of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. The former royal residence and present state capital lies in the middle of one of Germany’s most beautiful lake districts, the "Mecklenburger Seenplatte".

The Schwerin Chateau, lying on an island in Lake Schwerin is one of the most notable historic buildings in Germany and an irresistible tourist attraction as is the Schwerin Cathedral, a fine example of Gothic brick architecture. The representative Classicist buildings such as the Regional Museum, the Alte Palais, the Marstall, the State Theatre (widely regarded as one of the finest in Germany) and the Arsenal are all worth visiting. Further highlights are the Market Place, the Old Town, the many museums and the general cultural programme.

The excellent shopping facilities are appreciated by tourists and local people alike. Its superb setting on the southwest banks of Lake Schwerin and the surrounding countryside with its countless woods and lakes make the "city of the seven lakes and forests" well worth a visit.

Stralsund is an old Hanseatic town on the east German coast of the Baltic Sea. It's a very old town that dates back more than 750 years and has many monuments and histoirc sights. It is alos an idela base for going to Rugen. Built more than half a century ago, the Rügendamm is still the only bridge linking Stralsund and Rügen, Germanys biggest island. Also for most of the holidaymakers on the island of Hiddensee, the town on the Strelasund is point of departure and return of a pleasant day cruise by steamer.

The most beautiful view of the old town can be enjoyed from the waterfront. The skyline with the silhouettos of the Town Hall and the churches is quite impressive. As far back as in the period of the Hanseatic League, it was already the harbour of Stralsund where the towns heart beat. The harbour is is still the best starting point for a walk past the red brick houses of the old town.

Warnemunde harbour

Warnemunde harbour

Joseph Hollick
The seaside resort "Warnemünde" is known to be Rostock's leisure paradise. In fact it has been part of the city since 1323. Today Warnemundeis one of the most popular seaside resorts on the Baltic Sea.

Most of the cosy pubs and attractive shops you will find along the "Alte Strom" (old river). The lighthouse dates back to 1898, the mole is more than 500 metres long. The wide promenade along the sandy beach is very inviting - not only in summer. The Kurhaus spa centre is built in the Bauhaus style and is now used as a casino as well.

Very crowded is Warnemunde especially in early summer: the Warnemünde Week is an international sailing competition (June) and during the attached summer festival a historic "Ümgang" (parade) takes place.

Market Square

Market Square

AD Beldad
The old hanseatic town of Wismar was founded in the 13th century. Today it is the second largest port in Mecklenburg Vorpommerania with some 50,000 inhabitants. The city lies in a picturesque setting directly on the Baltic coast and its charming historic Old Town is one of the best preserved mediaeval town centres in North Germany with many fine and unusual architectonic examples. Some of the street and place names are reminders that the city was a Swedish possession between 1648 and 1803. The urban skyline is dominated by three imposing medieval brick built cathedrals.

The beauty of the city is enhanced by the old harbour and the impressive Market Square, one of the largest in North Germany. It is fringed with fine, carefully restored residences, including the oldest, the "Alte Schwede" and the "Wasserkunst", an ornate fountain. Look at the new Wismar on an interactive Aerial picture -map.

Apart from its lovely charm Wismar has a great deal to offer in its cultural programme as well as varied leisure and shopping facilities invite to visit the city
