Malawi, "the warm heart of Africa" is a small country with a diverse eco-systems, beautiful scenery, a variety of wildlife and an interesting culture. Geographically the country is dominated by Lake Malawi, the third largest freshwater lake in Africa, a trough 360 miles long and 50 miles wide formed where the western arm of the Great Rift Valley cuts into southern Africa.

Major cities are the capital Lilongwe and the commercial center Blantyre. Most tourists head for Lake Malawi with its crystal clear waters surrounded by mountains has one of the greatest selections of freshwater fish in the world (between 600 and 1,000 species of which 350 are endemic). Scuba and snorkeling are excellent, there are good sandy beaches and many activities including water sports, nature walks and drives and visits to local villages. You can also go on a ferry and go to the north of the country and travel back by bus - a popular trip for the independent traveller.

Blantyre is the business centre of the country and the biggest city of Malawi. It is only rivaled by Lilongwe in importance. It is located in the south of the country. The city is surrounded by hills and beautiful mountains. The hills which surround the city are the first layer of an echo of hills which stretch to the Kirk Range, the Zomba plateau Plateau. Blantyre's hills all have something special to offer. For Malawian standards the city of Blantyre has much to offer. There are some interesting sights to visit, for example Blantyre Mission, the church of St Michaels and All Angels, the Mandala House, and the March 3 House of former president Dr Banda. There are a few good restaurants to check out and it is a good place to start some interesting daytrips.

Mumbo Island, from Fat Monkeys, Cape Maclear

Kenneth Villadsen, Denmark
Cape Maclear is the most famous beach and very popular with the independent travellers. Cape Maclear spreads for about 5km’s along the beach. To find a place to stay it is best to get there quite early and have a look around to find a decent place to stay. Do not expect any exclusive lodge, but most places have now good & clean accommodation, along with bars, restaurants, activities and hammocks to laze in. There are also a number of good restaurants with local fare. It is no surprise that fish Barbeques and chicken are the favorites here. You can one of the local people to arrange it for you. A few hours notice is needed, and ask around for the going price.

Lilongwe is the capital of Malawi and the is loacted in the Central Region at an altitude of about 1000m. Lilongwe is some 300km north of Blantyre.

There are two distinct parts to the city – the Old Town, the original Lilongwe, which features busy African markets and many Asian shops, hotels and restaurants – and the New Town, which is less than 20 years old and hosts the main Government Buildings, Diplomatic Missions, International Aid Agencies and the Reserve Bank Headquarters which ranks amongst one of the most unique examples of architecture in Lilongwe.

There are new shopping precincts, hypermarkets, hotels and restaurants, all accessible by wide roads of a generally good standard. Traffic is not heavy (but at night-time watch out for cars driving with no lights!) and there is a relaxed atmosphere to life in Lilongwe.

Game viewing from the boat

Game viewing from the boat

Andy maganga

Liwonde National Park situated on the banks of the Shire River offers fine wildlife viewing in a lovely tropical setting. Its proximity to Lake Malawi makes it Malawi's favorite national park.

Mvuu is the only lodge/camp in the Liwonde Nation Park and is therefore able to offer exclusive boat trips and game drives both during the day and at night. Boat trips in stable handmade wooden boats are the highlight and offer the best opportunity for viewing the Park's large herds of Elephant. Night boat trips are a specialty, where with the help of spotlights, guests are able to encounter the huge Crocodiles of the Shire River up close, as well as look for two of the Park's 'special' birds, the Whitebacked Night Heron and Pel's Fishing Owl.
Walks with qualified scouts are another recommended activity, as the wildlife in the park includes large breeding herds of Elephants, plenty of Hippo and Crocodile, Sable Antelope, Impala, Reedbuck, Oribi, Leopard and Serval. Bird life is prolific and the park is justly regarded as one of the finest birding locations in south and central Africa - not just for the number of species, but for the ease with which specials can be seen.

Elephant and Sable Antelope occur in large numbers, as do Hippo, Crocodile, Impala and Waterbuck. Leopard, Serval and the rare Oribi may occasionally be seen. Black Rhino have been reintroduced from South Africa's Kruger National Park, as have Zebra, Lichtenstein's Hartebeest, and Buffalo from elsewhere within Malawi.

Birds are prolific, especially along the Shire River where African Fish Eagle, Palmnut Vulture, African Skimmer and Pel's Fishing Owl are fairly common. Böhm's Bee-eater, Lilian's Lovebird, Bat Hawk, Livingstone's Flycatcher, Whitebacked Night Heron and Brownbreasted Barbet are among the "specials".

The Mulanje (Englich: The island in the sky) Mountains provide great hiking in southern Malawi. Traversing Mulanje takes about 3 to 4 days. On the Mountain there are huts equipted with firewood and a caretaker, but facilities are going to be improved in the near future. There are no food and blankets available on the mountain.
The trip schould be started at Likhubula Forest Station. This is where accomodation has to be payed for in advance(around 5 USD per night). At Likhubula there is a variety of official guides porters who offer their services. Going without a guid is not advised but possible.

45 Minute Drive to Lake Malawi from Mzuzu

Pierre Chiwona
This is a quiet and attractive city in the Northern Region, situated on a 1000m high plain, about 370km north of Lilongwe. It has recently experienced some commercial development with the return of the Asian businessmen and a new University has just been opened. Mzuzu is a small city without many amenities. The city has an airport 10km to the north which operates flights to and from Lilongwe, Blantyre and Karonga. There is a variety of accomodation including an international standard hotel.

Nearby tourist attractions include Waterberg plateau park to the north, a cool 3000m high plateau with good game viewing, horse riding, hiking and superb views. To the northwest is Vwaza Marsh Game Reserve, a well established safari camp as is the case with Nyika. The roads to both camps can be poor, particularly in the rainy season, but Nyika is served by Air Malawi flying from Mzuzu airport, twice a week. Also to the north is the historic Livingstonia Mission and to the southeast there is Nkhata Bay on the shores of Lake Malawi where lake steamers can be boarded and where there is scuba diving and beach accomodation.

Plateau

Plateau

Lucian Fratila
Zomba plateau forms part of the Shire highlands that run from the southern end of Lake Malombe down to Thyolo escapment east of the Shire river, the outlet of Lake Malawi. The plateau forms the western horizon of Zomba town, the colonial capital of Malawi then called Nyasand before its independence. The Zomba plateau is the second highest in Malawi after the Nyika plateau and is estimated at 2087 metres above mean sea level. The plateau is so unique in that it habours some plants that are found nowhere in the world but in this plateau only. The plateau has a lot to offer like accommodation in the Ku-Chawe Inn, fishing in the magnificant Mulunguzi dam which suplies water to the Zomba town through gravity, the famous Chingwe's Hole which is believed to have been connected to the Shire river over 20km down the plateau, the view of the Mulanje mountain-the highest mountaion in Central Africa, the view of Lake Chilwa with the Phalombe plain to the East and the Zomba town itself down the plateau. All these can be seen from the point called the Queen's View where Queen Elizaberth the Queen Mother had a view of these, birds, primates and other animals can also easily be seen within the plateau. The list of interesting things is endless. Visiting Malawi without having fun and discovering more at Zomba plateau is incomplete and can be regretable.
