Church Place in Nospelt

Church Place in Nospelt

The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg with a population of only 435,700 is bordered by Belgium on the north and west, Germany on the east, and France on the south. It has an area of 2,586 sq km (998 sq mi). Until the EU expansion of May 1 2004, Luxembourg was the smallest member country in the European Union (now Malta is the smallest EU member country).
Luxembourg is often divided in two parts: the northern plateau land called Ösling and the southern Gutland. Ösling is part of the Ardennes , a rolling high plateau from the Devonian, dissected by narrow valleys. Gutland is built up of sedimentary rocks from the Triassic and Jurassic. Climate is sub-maritime in the north and somewhat more continental in the south. About a third of the country is forested, originally mainly oak and beech forest, now to a considerable degree replaced by spruce plantations.

Luxembourg is one of the world's most industrialised countries and has the highest standard of living in the EU. The GNP per capita is among the highest in the world, USD 66 727 in 2005. The Economy is based on the steel industry and on banking.

Founded in 963, Luxembourg became a Grand Duchy in 1815 and an independent state under the Netherlands. It lost more than half of its territory to Belgium in 1839, but gained a larger measure of autonomy. Full independence was attained in 1867. Overrun by Germany in both World Wars, it ended its neutrality in 1948 when it entered into the Benelux Customs Union and when it joined NATO the following year. In 1957, Luxembourg became one of the six founding countries of the European Economic Community (later the European Union) and in 1999 it joined the euro currency. The center of Luxembourg is Luxembourg city and there are a number of other beautiful small cities and villages to visit. Really worth a visit is Echternach and Vianden. All places can be easily visited in a day from the capital or neighbouring Trier.

The international air traffic is based at Findel airport, a few kilometres from the centre of Luxembourg city. Lux air is the national airline of Luxembourg. It flies from and to a considerable number of European cities. Several other main European airlines also fly to Findel. Frequent buses run from Findel to the city centre. Bus no 16 passes the railway station. However, travel from nearby countries is in many cases easier by train. There are direct trains from i.a. Brussels, Cologne and Paris.

________Economy

Economy—overview: The stable prosperous economy features moderate growth low inflation and low unemployment. Agriculture is based on small family-owned farms. The industrial sector until recently dominated by steel has become increasingly more diversified. During the past decades growth in the financial sector has more than compensated for the decline in steel. Services especially banking account for a growing proportion of the economy. Luxembourg participates in an economic union with Belgium on trade and most financial matters is also closely connected economically to the Netherlands and as a member of the EU enjoys the advantages of the open European market. :)

___________Language
Edit This
'Lëtzebuergesch' is the everyday spoken language of the people, and the symbol of the Luxembourgers national identity. This former Mosel-Frankish dialect is now recognised as the national language (since 1984), while both French and German remain the official languages. 'Lëtzebuergesch' or Luxembourgish is taught in schools and in language courses mostly addressed to the resident foreigners.

Both the German and French culture meet in Luxembourg. Franco-German bilinguism, without any language differences, is a typical aspect of the country's social structure. If both German and French are used in the press, in political and in religious life, French is nevertheless the official language of the administration, jurisdiction, parliament, education, and of some literary circles. Public offices though are held to answer -wherever possible- in the language they are addressed in. This peculiar language situation is a direct result of the size of the country, and its historic associations with both France and Germany.

Bourscheid castle is located on an isolated promontory, accessible only from the north-west, 150 meters above the level of the river Sûre and 370 meters above sea level. Even today the ruins testify of an impressive fortification covering a surface of 12.000 square meters (151 meters long, 53 meters wide) and surrounded by a massive ring wall with 11 watchtowers. Bourscheid is an excellent example of the medieval castle tradition.

The centre of the enclosure came into being around the year 1000 when a stone construction replaced an earlier wooden defense structure. Archaeological excavations have yielded traces of Ottonian, Carolingian, Merovingian end even Roman times. Initially, the little square near the tower with its "palas" and chapel was surrounded by a circular wall with at least 4 towers. Only the tower and the circular wall remain of this first construction dating from the romanesque period. The manifold building ornaments in the form of ears ("opus spicatum") are a characteristic of this part of the castle. ..

The castle

Clervaux is a medieval market town, set in thevnarrow valley of the river Klierf and surrounded by wood covered hills. The imposing castle which dates back to the 12th century is the main attraction of the town. It is the age-old witness to the prestige and power of the knights and counts whose estates stretched far across country from St. Ingbert to Vianden and Prüm.

A venerable witness to a prestigious past, Clervaux castle now houses the offices of the local government, the reception of the "Syndicat d'Initiative" (local Tourist Office), a collection of models of Luxembourg's old fortified castles, a small war museum exhibiting weapons and souvenirs from the 1944-1945 Ardennes offensive (Battle of the Bulge), and the remarkable collection of documentary art photography, the "Family of Man" by Edward Steichen.

Near the Benedictine Abbey, a historic monument in the form of a cross can be admired. It is a 12.5 metre high stone construction which was erected in 1899 to commemorate the heroic fighters at the time of the French invasion from 1795 to 1798. Two bronze bas-reliefs show scenes from the Oesling peasant's revolt against the French troops. Below a simple phrase, but one which is filled with pride and heroism, reads: "We don't know how to lie".

Several walking trails have origin and end in or near Clervaux. Maps and information are available at the tourist office (Syndicat d’initiative) in the castle. The railway company (CFL) has walking trails between the railway stations in Drauffelt and Clervaux and between Troisvierges and Clervaux. There are also special trails for Nordic walking in and around the Klierf valley.

The medieval market square in Echternach

The medieval market square in Echternach

Marc Theis
Echternach is the major town in the area known as "Little Switzerland", so called because of its craggy sandrock formations and myriad of small streams criss-crossing the region's dense forests, a genuine hikers paradise!

Luxembourg's only Saint, St Willibrord, a monk from Northumbria, built an abbey in Echternach, that was to become a major centre of Christianization. Even today, a pilgrimage to St Willibrord, the world's only "Dancing Procession" is held on Tuesday after Whitsun (cf www.luxembourg.co.uk/dancproc.html). In the Middle Ages, the abbey produced highly decorated copies of the Bible, encrusted with gems and precious stones. Facsimiles are on show in the Echternach Abbey Museum.

Although badly damaged during the Second World War, Echternach was successfully reconstructed and the small town has regained much of its former glory. The narrow streets, the medieval ramparts and old patrician houses look great in their new shape and form.

Highlights in and around Echternach include the Gorge du Loup, the Museum of Prehistory and the 7th-century basilica and Benedictine abbey. Echternach is about 30 km northeast of Luxembourg city.

Luxembourg town hall

T. Schmitz 2005
Luxembourg City is the heart of the country in cultural, political and social respect. It is not only the country's capital but also one of the three capitals of the European Community (the other two being Strassbourg and Brussels).

Moreover, Luxembourg city is a banking centre and cosmopolitan town surrounded by magnificent historical fortifications, classified as world patrimony by UNESCO. The city is very pleasantly situated overlooking the Pétrusse and Alzette Valleys. Luxembourg was founded in 963 AD on a rocky outcrop known as "the Bock", by Sigefroid, Count of Ardennes, who expanded on a roman castillium, thus laying the cornerstone of a fortress that later was to become Luxembourg City.

While in no way comparable in size to most other European capitals, Luxembourg has a lot of charm and its people are justifiably proud of their country. The nation's motto 'Mir wëlle bleiwe wat mir sin' (We want to remain what we are) underlines the uniqueness of Luxembourg.

Apart from the numerous beautiful sights, the city of Luxembourg offers quite a good nightlife with a large number of pubs, cafes and discos despite of its small population of less than 100.000 people. By the way, more than 33% of the capital's population is of foreign origin. The biggest ethnic community is actually from Portugal, rendering a special Latin touch to the city . So it is no suprise that Luxembourg is a fantastic place for eating out, especially as it boasts of more Michelin stars per square mile (or per head of population) than any other country.

Luxembourg city is an ideal starting point for excursions all over, e.g. for visiting remarkable destinations like Vianden Castle, Wiltz Festival Town or the Abbey Town of Echternach. Getting there is easy on the well-developed road network or by train and coach.

Munshausen (Luxembourgish Munzen) is a commune (Gemeng) in northern Luxembourg, bordering Clervaux to the north. Except for the old village Munshausen, mentioned already in the 9th century, the commune also includes Drauffelt, Marnach, Roder and Siebenaler. The commune is set in a typical Ardennes landscape with roling hills and steep valleys. Munshausen village has an old church from the 13th century, the patron of which is the missionary St. Hubert. In Marnach a building for cultural activities called Cube 521 has recently been erected. It has an auditorium for about 300 persons. For most tourists the major reason for going to Munshausen is the “Touristic Domain” where the Ardennes draft horse is demonstrated by knowledgeable staff as well as other features of old village life. It is a popular place, particularly for children. There are several walking trails in the area. Among them there is one that starts in Munshausen village and leads through Siebenaler and Drauffelt and back to Munshausen (9 km). There are other trails leading from Marnach or Roder into the oak and beech forests close to the German border.
