Its thick swathe of Renaissance walls, the almost entirely medieval street plan, its palaces and houses make Lucca one of my favorite cities in Italy. The most enjoyable way to get your bearings is to follow the path around the top of the walls - or even better, to rent a bike and cycle around. Lucca can be easily explored on foot (or bike), entering the medieval streets, walking along ancient house facades and doing some shoppings in one of the small and lovely shops in and around Via Fillungo makes you feel just fine. |

| If you are interested in religious art, enter the 14th-century cathedral
Duomo San Martino to see Nicola Pisano’s Descent From the Cross or have a
look at the multi-patterned columns at "San Michele", the church of the
archangel. Climbing up the Guinigi Tower, where an old oak tree grows on top
is even as romantic as entering the Piazza Anfiteatro, the ancient
amphitheatre, with its marvellous facades and balconies. Lucca is famous for its olive oil and has become a favorite spot for artists and writers. Although you can see Lucca in half a day as a day trip from either Pisa of Florence you may want to linger to soak in its tranquil atmosphere and enjoy the many fine restaurants. In July you can enjoy pop cncerts in the open air at Lucca Summer Festival (some names of recent years: Eric Clapton, Elton John, Oasis, Paul SImon, Peter Gabriel, Rod Stewart, Macy Gray, Pink, Dido). Every August Lucca hosts the Puccini Music Festival. If you have some time left, try to visit a few of the villas of lucca. _______Sights Edit This Lucca Lucca Dave Greaves Lucca is a small city, rich of sights and history. Here you still can feel the flair of all its important periods: the Roman city, the Medieval city, the Renaissance city, the nineteenth century city: traces of all of these may still be found in the urban fabric. Apart from the significant monuments, such as the sixteenth-seventeenth century Walls, Lucca stands out in its integrity and its atmosphere as a lively and vital centre. Suffice to look down from on high, from one of its towers, or to wander through the narrow, tortuous Medieval streets: the white marble of superb Romanesque churces, the orange-red or the thirteenth-fourteenth century buildings, the grey of the paving stones, the green of the vegetation peeping out all over that heightens the powerful mass of the ramparts and the surfaces of the Walls that rise, almost unreal, out of the lawns of glacis. Lucca has many beautiful attractions. The many romanesque churches, San Michele, the Duomo of San Martino and the Basilica of San Frediano should not be missed. A walk along but a section of the Walls is not to be missed. The ramparts, thirty meters wide at the base and still in their original state, cover over four kilometers. With their vegetation, they make for a highly original public park from which it is possible to enjoy views of the city and the sorrounding hills. A trip to the Torre Guinigi is highly recommended. It offers fabulous view; but it is also one of the city's symbols, it for no other reason then the odd tree planted at the top. Along the same route, a visit should be made to the ninenteenth century Piazza Anfiteatro, built on the remains of the ancient Roman Amphitheatre. Then, proceed to the house of Giacomo Puccini (now museum), and further on to Via del Battistero. This street is the world renowned for its antique dealers. The antiques market on the third Sunday of every month is also famous. For thirty years, it as drawn innumerable antique lovers to the city's plazas and streets. [Add Sight] Casa di Puccini Edit This x Giacomo Puccini was born almost opposite to this museum at Via di Poggio 30. The great hall-like interior includes paintings by Tintoretto, Ghirlandaio and Filippino Lippi. The most famous item, however, is Jacopo delle Quercia's "Tomb of Ilaria del Caretto" - unfortunately restored in a very vigorously way. Here the ring of walls built in the 1300s marked the eastern border of the medieval town. Once beyond the turreted vault of the gate of Saint Gervasio and Saint Protasio, we can see the enclosure walls of VILLA BUONVISI and catch a glimpse of the outstanding gardens of the villa, thanks to the so-called ‘finestre lucchesi’ which open onto them. The facade is crowned by a huge bronze sculpture of the Archangel Michael. When the Romans arrived they allied themselves with the Etruscans against the Ligurians who fled into the Apuane mountains. The origins of Lucca date back to 180 B.C. Before founding a city the Romans would hold sacrificial ceremonies which began with the digging of the perimeter of the city. After which, three animals (a bull, a sheep and a pig) were sacrificed to the gods Jupiter, Minerva, and Giunone whose temple was erected inside the city walls. Within and beyond the boundary of the city the land was divided up into "centurie". By means of the "centurie" the Romans would plot the circuit of the walls after which public buildings were erected and streets were traced along orthogonal axes. The main streets of the city were called the "cardo maximo" which ran in a north-southerly direction corresponding to the modern Via Fillungo, and the "decumano maximo" corresponding to the modern Via S. Croce, which ran in a east-westerly direction. The nucleus of the city was the forum which was placed at the junction of these two main roads and which corresponds to the present-day Piazza S. Michele, still referred to as S. Michele in Foro (St. Michael in Forum). The circuit of the walls was irregular owing to frequent changes in the course of the river Auserculus, (the Auserculus or Ozieri was in ancient times the main river, while the present-day Serchio was merely a minor branch). The first span of the walls built in the second century B.C. was of a rectangular shape approximately 8 to 9 metres high, built "ad opus quadratus" with blocks of travertino rock which came from local quarries. The area of the city was 39 hectares and the population was approximately 10,000; the walls were roughly 2,500 metres long, corresponding to the modern Via Mordini and Via degli Angeli (Sommella) in the north; Via Galli Tassi, Via S. Domenico, Via Cittadella up to Corso Garibaldi in the west; Corso Garibaldi in the south; and in the east, Via dell’Angelo Custode and Via della Rosa. The city had four gates along the circuit of the walls: the "decumanus" linking the east gate of S. Gervasio and the west gate of S. Donato; and The "cardo", linking the north gate of S. Frediano and the south gate of S. Pietro. In the second century A.D. the amphitheatre was erected outside the walls while the theatre was built inside the town walls. The geographical position of the city is noteworthy. Situated at the base of the Tuscan Appennines in the midst of a well-watered, fertile plain, close to the Mediterranean Sea. Lucca has always been an important thoroughfare owing to its location. The Via Clodia was built around 155 B.C. while the Via Emilia was built in 109 B.C.. The Via Cassia, linking Rome and Florence, went on to Pistoia from which one could then proceed to Bologna or turn towards Lucca. During the Municipium the most important communication routes were: Lucca-Pisa and Lucca-Luni (Camaiore, Pietrasanta), the latter, either joined Via Emilia Scaura heading towards Luni or, more likely, followed the present-day Via Sarzanese and turned left just after the S. Pietro bridge, which met up with the Aurelia and took you to Massaciuccoli. Here in Massaciuccoli, are numerous Roman villas and the remains of the Roman thermal baths. The remains of Roman thermal baths have been found in the heart of Lucca, in the subterranean section of the Basilica of S. Giovanni and S.
