kollossi castle just outside of limerssol

kollossi castle just outside of limerssol

terry lewis
Limassol (Lemessos) is situated in the south of the island and it is Cyprus“ main industrial and maritime area and also the second biggest town of the country. Its population is about 135.000 and rises during holiday times because of the tourism. Most of the tourists only pass by on their way to the more historic sites like Akrotiri or the Troodos mountains, but there is actually a lot to see in Limassol besides a busy industrial centre. Places of interest include the Berengaria Castle, the place where Richard the Lionheart married Berengaria, Kolossi Castle, the ancient city of Curium and its still functionning theatre, amathunta and many other archeological spots scattered around the city. If it is night life you are looking for, check out Yermasogea, the tourist area of Limassol, where both locals and tourists meet in the vibrant clubs and bars. The old city centre though is the place to go to. A walk will lead the visitor to a vibrant community full of shop owners crafts people, artists of all disciplines and businessmen. Because the city is relatively untouched by the streams of tourism, it has been able to maintain the traditions of Cypriote life: meze restaurants, wine and beer cellars, places to sit outside and just watch people passing by. Nevertheless, traditional old boutiques and dark inns, where the Cypriots drink the famous Brandy sour drink are rapidly changing into modern shopping centres and restaurants. Limassol is know for its famous wine festivals held in August

Helene Black at the Limassol Sculpture park
The city is much older than you think at first glance: Richard the Lionheart married Berengaria of Navarre and crowned her queen of England in 12th century. This happened inside the Limassol Castle, which surely is the main historic site in Limassol.

_________Getting There
Edit This
By sea:

Limassol is the main seaport of Cyprus. Several shipping lines reach the city from Italy, Greece and Israel. The new harbour is in the southern part out of the town. No.1 buses and the normal taxi services connect the new harbour with the town centre.

Over land:

Buses:

From all over the island you can reach Limassol by various bus lines. All buses stop at one of the three main bus stations. The KEMEK buses have their terminal at the Enoseos and Eirinis Street, north from the castle. They include the Nicosia (Levkosa) - Limassol line, the Pafos - Limassol ad the Polis - Pafos - Limassol lines.

For timetable and further information, call: 25 363 241

The Kallenos lines have their terminal at the corner of Araouzou and Hadjipavlou Streets. They travel to Larnaca and Agia Napa.

The third bus station is used by most urban buses and is on Andreas Themistokleou Street in the town centre. The urban bus network connects the centre of Limassol with its suburbs and periphery.

Taxis:

Limassol is also connected to the major island towns by a network of shared-taxi lines. They are faster and more frequent but twice as expensive as the buses.

The shared-taxis have their terminal at 49 Spyrou Araouzou Street (Kypros Co, Tel: (05) 363 979) or at 21 Thessaloniki Street (Karydas and Kyriakos Co“s, Tel: (05) 362 061)

Rent-a-car:

In the bigger cities of the island you can rent cars very easily. They are not as cheap as in other Mediterranean countries, but, especially in a group, it is a good thing to have a car, because taxidrivers sometimes refuse to transport more than 3 persons with luggage. With a rented car - you pay a daily fee and a charge for every kilometre you travel - you can discover the island and especially the mountains on your own. Take care, in Cyprus you drive on the left, like in Great Britain. The city is very crowded, its streets are narrow, parking is scarce and traffic is very slow.

The following agencies hire cars in Limassol:

Hertz, Budget and Avis are in Nicosia road. Here you will find also the A. Petsas Company.

Another Cyprian company, Andy Spyrou, with branches also in Pafos and Nicosia you will find in Omonia Ave. 38 - 40, Tel: (05) 371 441.

exellent beach on the coast
Governors Beach is located East of Limassol and from April to November is reacheble with a bus. The bus ride its self is worth the money as you get to see some of the countryside and villages. It's a quiet tranquil setting with very safe beach for young children or non swimmers. A choice of restaurants and even a few apartments.

Lady's Mile
Edit This

Lady's Mile beach is situated west of Limassol town, between the New Port and Akrotiri RAF base. The beach was named after the horse (Lady) of a previous RAF base commander who would exercise Lady on the sands. The beach has virtually no development, just a few wood construction restaurants spaced out along its 3- 4 mile length. The port end of the beach is mostly pebbles and the water becomes deep very quickly, but as you get nearer the RAF base the sand becomes whiter and the incline very shallow. There are no buses so you need a car to get there, but its a mostly unspoilt more..

Limassol beaches - Pentakomo to Pissouri
Edit This

I would divide Limassol beaches into 2 groups. Those closer to the city, which invariably have wave breakers, and are well organised, and those further away, which are relatively untouched and may have more interest for those of use looking for a more natural environment and variety.

In the east you will see beaches with dark sand and white rock formations, while in the (far) west you will see rougher seas, some of them even dangerous, pebble or pebble with sand and cliffs. A number of these beaches have few visitors even during the more..

When visiting the topless bar at the Monte Carlo nightclub (if I get the name right) right in front of the Holiday Inn at the beach road, if you have enough drinks you are informed you could take the girls out to your hotel if you buy additional xxx drinks.

This is a scam- once you get the girls to your hotel (or prior to that, since we were not interested and lucky enough to find out), they charge you additional money which the club manager does not inform you about. So if you choose not to avail of the services of the girls, you lose your money for the 'extra' more..
