Lilongwe is the capital of Malawi and the is loacted in the Central Region at an altitude of about 1000m. Lilongwe is some 300km north of Blantyre.

There are two distinct parts to the city – the Old Town, the original Lilongwe, which features busy African markets and many Asian shops, hotels and restaurants – and the New Town, which is less than 20 years old and hosts the main Government Buildings, Diplomatic Missions, International Aid Agencies and the Reserve Bank Headquarters which ranks amongst one of the most unique examples of architecture in Lilongwe.

There are new shopping precincts, hypermarkets, hotels and restaurants, all accessible by wide roads of a generally good standard. Traffic is not heavy (but at night-time watch out for cars driving with no lights!) and there is a relaxed atmosphere to life in Lilongwe.

Korea Garden Lodge : Plumbing new depths in “executive accommodation” Three colleagues and I had the misfortune of spending some nights at the Korea Garden Lodge last week whilst working in Lilongwe, Malawi and are still talking about our dreadful experiences there. The rooms in the Executive Wing – the most expensive of all the rooms - are in dire need of refurbishment and were not particularly clean. Towels, when supplied, were threadbare, stained and distinctly unappealing – they should have been replaced long ago. Reports of a leaking toilet elicited no response whatsoever; a towel therefore had to be used to block the apparent source of the leak for the entire duration of our stay. Unlike the promises in their advertisements of “superb dining” and “fabulous restaurant”, the food, when items offered on the menu were in fact available, was neither superb nor fabulous. When we asked on our first night about what was available for desert, the response was “What would you like ?” to which we again asked what was available. After the waiter had gone to the kitchen to ask, he returned to tell us that we could have “Tea or coffee” One of my colleagues also even resorted to persuading the chef to let him fry his own eggs for breakfast in order in order to be able to eat something edible (we noted, with amusement, how several of the other guests then asked him to prepare their eggs too!) The swimming pool appeared to have algae and was a source of attraction for any number of mosquitoes. In terms of WI-FI internet access, whilst this is intermittent, do note that the strongest connection is in the corner of the restaurant near the pool table so get their early and grab the nearest table that you can. With one or two notable exceptions, staff, whilst generally friendly, do not appear to be very service-oriented. We left the hotel with no great relief and have, happily, spent additional nights at Cluny Lodge (not too far from KGL) where we received a warm welcome from our hosts, Marinus and Bev. The accommodation there is clean and comfortable, the food is good and nothing is too much trouble for either of them as far as their guests are concerned. Bev even produced dinner for us on Sunday evening – the one evening when the kitchen is officially closed – and Marinus will go out of his way to take you to the bank or wherever else you need to go in Lilongwe and will also collect you from and drop you off at the airport. Their daughter, Shannon, who lives on a farm outside Lilongwe, is also available to advise on places to visit, etc and will even make arrangements for you if you require). Truly a “one stop shop” and a home from home.
