Molivos Harbour

Molivos Harbour

John Cotterill
Lesbos is located at a very short distance off the Turkish coast. The island is the third largest in Greece and its people traditionally made a living from fishing, farming, making cheese and growing olives, fruit and vegetables. Tourism is a comparative newcomer to the scene and accounts for only 10% of the local economy. This helps keep a traditional feel to the place.

Lesbos was the birthplace of Sappho, an ancient Greek poetess and Aesop who wrote the famed book of fables. The distinctive rocky, volcanic landscape with its plentiful oak and pine forests is dotted with thermal springs, great examples of Byzantine architecture and stunning beaches.

The capital of the island is Mytilini. The best known other resorts are Anaxos, Molyvos, and Skala Kalloni.

Mytilini is probably the most visited city on Lesbos, not in the least because this is one of the few places in the eastern part that can be reached fairly easy by public transport (both boat and bus). It's a busy coastal city with old markets, an old harbour, small cafés (where you can taste the original ouzo), cobbled streets and various museums. The museum of Theofilos gives a nice overview of the life of this popular painter. If you want to know more about Lesbos' history, a visit to the New Archeological Museum might be an idea.

Another attraction that you may not want to miss (especially if you are already interested in the New Archeological Museum) is the Mytilini castle. The castle is approximately 15-20 minutes away by foot from downtown, and with only 2 Euros ticket price, you can explore the entire castle (dungeons included). You can also get a great view of the ocean and a great view of the city from the castle.

Besides those, it's quite a modern town with a bunch of fashionable shopping centres, tourist agencies and fancy boats. Just sit at one of the ouzeries at the seafront and watch the ships come in with the Mount Karvori in the background. The resorts of Skala Kalloni are just a few miles away.

Plomari is a city/town approximately the same size as Molyvos. There are plenty of inexpensive hotels accomadating tourists enjoying their vacation on the sand beach. Bike and motorcycle rentals are also easy to find.

Ouzo enthusiasts should not miss this place as there are several ouzo facotries that allows visitors. A particularly interesting ouzo factory that still preserves the tradition way of distilling ouzo is owned by Ouzo Giovanni. His store is on the main street, but the factory is located between Plomari and nearby village Megalochori.

Kalloni is quiet market town about 40km west of Mytilini, it is on the intersection of most of the island’s bus routes and is well supplied with banks and cash machines. The beach resort of Skala Kalloni is about 3km south of the old town. The long, coarse sand beach is gently shelving and is therefore suitable for families.

The main sight is the Limonos Monastery, some 7km away which was founded by St Ignatios in 1526. The huge fortress-like structure contains more than 40 churches. Other attractions include the Temple of Aphrodite at Mesi, about 14km east of Skala Kalloni and the natural hot water springs at Polychnitos on the southern end of the Gulf of Kalloni.
