| Larnaca Travel Guide Edit This The best resource for sights, hotels, restaurants, bars, what to do and see LARNACA LARNACA GEORGE This port city of 70.000 is the site of the main international airport and the most modern of Cyprus towns. Larnaca offers numerous sightseeing attractions but most visitors arrive and then leave quickly. If you do find yourself in Larnaca spend time on the beaches or tour the Ayia Phaneromeni Church (icons) and the 9th-century Byzantine Church of St. Lazarus which is reputed to hold the remains of the saint. In the winter the nearby Great Salt Lake is home to thousands of pink flamingos, which is situated near the international airport. Larnacas former name was Kition or Kittim (one of Noah's descendants). The name Larnaca is derived from Greek word 'larnax' (coffin), which is probably a reminder of the many ancient coffins found on Kition's grounds. Kition was one of the towns settled by the Mycaeneans in the 13th century BC. Under Ottoman and British rule, Larnaca was the main trade centre of the island. At the beginning of our century it lost its rank, first to Famagusta (1918) and later to Limassol. Larnacas seaport today seldom sees large ships - but it still caters hundrets of private yachts. It has several industrial plants, as well as a large oil refinery. Larnaca is slowly rebuilding its overseas trade now, along with Famagusta in the Turkish zone. ________Sights Edit This Holy Lazarus Church, Larnaca Holy Lazarus Church, Larnaca Gemma Sunderland [Add Sight] St. Lazarus Church Edit This Holy Lazarus Church, Larnaca Holy Lazarus Church, Larnaca photo by: Gemma Sunderland At the corner of Faneromenis and Agiou Lazarou Street is the church of Agiou Lazarou (Holy Lazarus), built in the 9th century by Byzantine Emperor Leo, on the site of St. Lazarus' tomb. According to legend, Lazarus travelled to Larnaca after his resurrection, and became the city's first bishop. His tomb is inside the church, under the main altar. The entrance is decorated with a number of icons. The church belltower was built in 1857. The church houses a small museum, containing beautiful samples of Byzantine religious art, including old wood carvings, icons and liturgical more.. type: Hotspots World66 rating: [rate it] Acropolis of ancient Kition Edit This This part of the city was once the capital of the whole island. Little remains of the old city, once rich in temples and palaces, are to be seen today: Only a few remnants of Heracles' abd Aphrodite's temples and several gold, bronze and ivory tombs of the 13th century BC. type: general World66 rating: [rate it] Kition Archaeological Site Edit This Archaelogical digs prove that Kition was founded by Mycenean traders in the 13th century BC, destroyed toward the end of that century and rebuilt by a new wave of Aegean immigrants. The Phoenicians conquered the town in the late 9th century BC and tried from here to invade the island. This is one of the most important historic sites. Five temples of the 13th and 12th century BC were unearthed, along with traces of a number of other structures. The site is open Mon - Fri from 7.30am to 2.30pm, Thu from 3-6pm. Entrance fee. type: general World66 rating: [rate it] Larnaca Castle Edit This Along the beach, near Ankara Street you will immediately see Larnaca Castle. East of the airport the beaches are quite organised, a number having been awarded Blue flags and have wavebreakers. To the west the beaches are less organised. Larnaca is characterised by the presence of a system of salt lakes in the west and the swamp like Voroklini lake in the east. They usually dry out in summer, but otherwise they can be excellent for birdwatching. For in depth more.. World66 rating: [rate it] email: phivos.ioannides@natureofcyprus.org |
