| Lappeenranta Travel Guide Edit This The best resource for sights, hotels, restaurants, bars, what to do and see Fortress Fortress Lappeeranta Business and Tourism Services Located at the south-west point of lake Saimaa, Lappeenranta has served a important role as a bridge between the Finnish and Russian cultures for over 350 years. Nowadays, its strategic position makes it an ideal environment for hi-tech companies with an eye on the Russian market. City of Lappeenranta Lappeenranta is a friendly town of great natural beauty with 58,000 inhabitants. It is the administrative, commercial and cultural centre of South Karelia, and a hub of lakeside tourism. Lappeenranta has many nicknames, including the Town of Lindens, Cavalry Town, Gate to Lake Saimaa, Gateway to the East… Naturally, each appellation has its roots in the history of the town. For example, the first linden trees were planted in the parks of Lappeenranta in the 1780s, today nearly 2,600 lindens line the streets of the town. The centuries old cavalry tradition continues with the cavalrymen riding through the streets of the town dressed in red trousers and elaborately embroidered jackets. The Fortress, with its museums, craftsmen's shops and cafés breathes history. Every day, around ten ships depart from the harbour, heading for the labyrinth of islands on Lake Saimaa or through the Saimaa Canal. Winter in Lappeenranta is a lively and active season. A rich variety of theatre performances and concerts, excellent accommodation, fascinating museums and magnificent opportunities for outdoor activities, seasoned with Karelian hospitality, make Lappeenranta an all-year-round tourist destination. Well-kept cross country skiing tracks start from the centre of the town, with many skiing events to enliven the atmosphere in the late winter. ______History Edit This Lappeenranta has a colourful history, lying as it does on the border between two different cultures. The harbour area of Lappeenranta used to be widely known as Lapvesi market place in the seventeenth century. It was so important as a trading place that general Governor Pietari Brahe proposed that the Swedish government should grant town priviledges to Lapvesi. In 1649 Queen Christina of Sweden signed the instrument of foundation, including an emblem, a savage, for the new town. The town received its Swedish name Villmanstrand ("wild man's shore") from the savage figure in the emblem. The Swedes began the fortification of Lappeenranta after the period of the "Great Hate" in 1721. In the Battle of Lappeenranta in 1741, the fortress fell in five hours. In the Peace of Turku in 1743 after the period of the "Lesser Hate", Lappeenranta fell under Russian rule, nearly a hundred years before the rest of Finland. Later on Gustavus III tried once more to conquer back the lost territory, but did not succeed. It wasn't until the year 1811 that "old Finland" and the rest of Finland were reunited. This started a 130-year-period when Lappeenranta was no longer the scene of battles, but a peaceful inland district. In World War II Lappeenranta experienced heavy soviet bombardment. _______Getting There Edit This Lappeenranta enjoys excellent road, rail, air and waterway connections with all parts of Finland. The city lies on Highways no 6 and 13 and on the Eastern main railway line. The flight to Helsinki takes only half an hour. The Lappeenranta international airport has seven flights to Helsinki every week day, two on Saturdays and one on Sundays. The Saimaa Canal, which starts at Lappeenranta, plays a central role for water-borne transport in Eastern Finland. The Finnish parts of the 43-km long canal are entirely within Lappeenranta city territory. The canal links the Saimaa waterway system to the Baltic Sea at the Gulf of Finland. Finland´s most important inland waterway harbour, the Lappeenranta Mustola port, is located on the Saimaa. As a border town with good traffic connections Lappeenranta offers special benefits in foreign trade, particularly in Eastern trade. Lappeenranta is regarded as a Gateway to Russia for transportation of goods and tourism in Finland. Road traffic runs via Lappeenranta-Nuijamaa Border Station and rail traffic via Lappeenranta- Vainikkala Border Station.
