Sunset over Apapa, Lagos

Sunset over Apapa, Lagos

Y. Frommer

Lagos, in the context of geopolitical classification, is a metropolitan city. Lagos is one of the 36 federating states in Nigeria made up of 20 major towns and 24 villages.

The multi-ethnic nature of the place made it hard to get a good grip on the the place.

Most visitors who come to Lagos are here for business, and touristic infrastructure is lacking a bit. The huge city does have an interesting museum filled with replicas of some of the best African Art you can find in Europe and the US. There are good beaches nearby, and in places like Ikeja or in Bar Beach there is always something going on - even if it is just a huge "go slow".

Beaches such as Alpha in Lekki, Wispering Palms in Badagry etc, are ideal places for fun seekers.
_______Sights
Edit This
Although Lagos is a really huge city there are not many sights in the traditional sense of the word. There are interesting markets, there is one good museum but best is to just tour the city and enjoy the people.

_________Practical Information
Edit This
Lagos is a beautiful city and there's a lot of fun to be had while there. However, please be careful. Corruption is rife and bribery is common place. Often you will be expected to offer a bribe. Please be careful of the locals who ask for cash in advance of services and goods. Often it is a scam and you will never receive the services or goods. If you hear the words "guyman", "barrister", "mugu" or "maga" mentioned then be very careful! These are terms often used by the "criminal element". As long as you "play it safe" and keep your money, credit cards, travellers cheques [checks], passport and other valuables safe then you're sure to have a great time in a colourful and entertaining city.

_________Getting Around

Public Transport
Edit This

Public transport is virtually the only means for locals to get around. the majority not being able to afford a car. Considering 15 million people still try to get round the city. Still can mean 2 hours getting to/from work.

In order of cheapness.

Okada's (motorbikes)

N20 ish for a ride. Most of the drivers must be drunk or high on something. Cheap, plentiful but risky.

Yellow buses

Old VW transporters never die. They are shipped to lagos, painted yellow with two blue stripes and put to work transport more..

A day trip to Epe fish and meat market is well worth a visit. This township is on the Lekkie expressway and can take a couple of hours to get there. Be prepared to bargain hard. Another day trip is to the ancient city of Ibadan. There is a University complex there and also a very interesting zoo. This is about a one and a half to two hour drive from Lagos. Eleko Beach is in the direction of Epe. Very nice tropical beach where you can buy fresh fish, prawns etc very cheaply. Many traders visit this beach particularly on a Sunday selling anything from beads, tablecloths, furniture more..

Afrika Shrine
Edit This

Run by Femi Kuti (son of Fela), this is a great rock temple. The best night to go there is sunday. When Femi is outside of the country the place can be rather empty, however, so you might want to check if he is around. The Shrine is located in a quiet street in Ikeja.

Dreadfully load Afro-beat - great if you like that sort of thing. Your driver will know where it is, best to get there at midnight or so when you're already half drunk so you won't buy too many drinks. Just dance to the music, or hang out - you probably won't get hassled by hookers or dope dealers, unlike most other places.

Not a bad place to hang out in Lagos, however watch out for those drinks prices, could end up spending a small fortune, even for Nigerian standards.

Bar Beach
Edit This

Bar Beach is one of the best spots to go at night. The name gives a pretty accurate description of the place: there is a long row of bars along the beach. The atmosphere is nice.

It is not a nude beach, can be dangerous for swimming and I certainly would not go there at night if I was black or white. Its a rough part of town, with many area boys (hoodlums) and other gangsters.

Good place to boogie. The music on a Friday is more old school though still very good. The setting is very modern and trendy.
