:::::::::::Komarom Travel Guide
Edit This The best resource for sights, hotels, restaurants, bars, what to do and see
The closeness of the border and River Danube has always determined the life and the unique structure of Southern-Komarom having 20 000 inhabitants. After the Trianon peace treaty the Danube became a border river and divided the old, integrated town into Slovakian (Komarno) and Hungarian Komarom.
The parts of the town (on the Hungarian side) are: Szony (Brigetio) which used to be a strategic centre of the ancient Pannonia province, and Koppanymonostor which is famous for its natural beauty and the Benedictine Monastery destroyed in the time of Turkish occupation. The main attraction of Komarom is the medicinal water that is rich in minerals and constitutes the basis of the bathing and medicinal complex which invites guests to recover or refresh all the year round.

The most famous sight of the town is the fortification system which is unparalleled in Europe. The parts of this system in Hungary are: Star fort (1871-1877), Igmand fort (1871-1877) and Fort Monostor (1850-1871). Despite its gigantic size this fort system is uniform regarding both the architecture and the building materials. The top level of the forts has already sunk down to the ground level so it is covered with grass and wild flowers as part of the nature.
Other sights are: the memorial relic Roman Catholic Church in Szony (1774-1777), the one-time Gyurky country-seat (Selye Janos Hospital today), the Presbyterian Church (1787), the building of the granary (1770), the Collection of Ocean Shipping of dr. Ferenc Juba in the building of the town hall, the Klapka Gyorgy Museum (showing the frescos and finds of the ancient civic town Brigetio), the Small Gallery, the Presbyterian Church standing on the Jokai square and the Jesus Heart Roman Catholic Church.

The small town of Koszeg only 3km from Hungary's western border is a delight for the visitor tired of the hustle and bustle of Vienna and Budapest. It's bucolic charm is centred around the mediaeval Jurasics Ter; overlooked by the Heroes Gate and the museum based within it. looking down it's not hard to imagine the townsfolk going about their business for centuries past. The buildings around the square include the old town hall and a wonderful pharmacy museum featuring an antique druggists shop. The two churches in the middle of the square are worth a look although entrance is restricted to the rear of the churches only. The church of St. James features some wonderful old frescoes. Further to the north is Jurasics Castle which withstood a siege in 1532 helping to stem the advance of the Turks westwards. The Turkish forces withdrew at 11 a.m. , an event commemorated every day as the towns churches mark the hour. Don't miss the massively heavy castle walls curving round to the west or the sad remnents of the brick synagogue to the east along Varkor. If you have a spare hour travel out along Sziget utca northwards and scale Calvary Hill marked with the stations of the cross along the climb to get a lovely panorama of the town.

Martin Falley
Lake Balaton may not be the Mediterranean, but don't tell that to Hungarians. Somehow over the years they have managed to create their own Central European version of a Mediterranean culture along the shores of their long, shallow, milky-white lake. Throughout the long summer, swimmers, windsurfers, sailboats, kayaks, and cruisers fill the warm and silky smooth lake, Europe's largest at 48 miles (77 km) long and 9 miles (14km) wide at its broadest stretch. Around the lake's 123 miles (197km) of shoreline, vacationers cast their reels for pike; play tennis, soccer, and volleyball; ride horses; and hike in the hills.

First settled in the Iron Age, the Balaton region has been a recreation spot since at least Roman times. From the 18th century onward, the upper classes erected spas and villas along the shoreline. Not until the post-World War II Communist era did the lake open up to a wider tourist base. Some large hotels along the lake are former trade union resorts built under the previous regime. Most of these hotels in the meantime are rebuild to modern and comfortable accommodations.

Lake Balaton, it seems, has something for everyone. Teenagers, students, and young travelers tend to congregate in the hedonistic towns, like Siofók, of the south shore. Here, huge 1970s-style beachside hotels are filled to capacity all summer long, and disco music pulsates into the early morning hours. The south-shore towns are as flat as Pest; walk 10 minutes from the lake and you're deep in farm country. The air here is still and quiet; in summer, the sun hangs heavily in the sky.

Older travelers and families tend to spend more time on the hillier, more graceful north shore. There, little villages are neatly tucked away in the rolling countryside, where the grapes of the popular Balaton wines ripen in the strong southern sun. However, if you're coming from Budapest, the northern shore of the lake at first appears every bit as built up and crowded as the southern shore. Beyond Balatonfüred, this impression begins to fade. You'll discover the Tihany Peninsula, a protected area whose 12 square kilometers (4 3/4 square miles) jut out into the lake like a knob. Moving westward along the coast, passing from one lakeside settlement to the next, you can make forays inland into the rolling hills of the Balaton wine country. Stop for a swim--or the night--in a small town like Szigliget. The city of Keszthely, sitting at the lake's western edge, marks the end of its northern shore. All towns on the lake are within 1 1/2 to 4 hours from Budapest by a gyors (fast) train, but the trip takes much longer on a sebes (local) train.

Today Siofok is one of the most important tourist centre, as it is said: "Siofok is the capital of Lake Balaton." It has been made capital by its public transport of high level and its shallow shore offering safe bathing to holiday-makers. Besides the mild water of the lake visitors coming here may enjoy the organized programmes and the Hungarian hospitality as well.

The town itself is an open-air exhibition with its sculptures and monuments on public squares. (Among others one of the greatest Hungarian contemporary sculptor, Imre Varga who was born at Siófok, exhibited his sculpture of Imre Kálmán, titled "Vanishing Time". In addition to the historic buildings, some modern churches offer an exciting sight by their queer architecture. Due to the development in recent years the town has become a site of flowers and parks. An outstanding park in town is the Millenium Park in front of the railway station.

The town 106 kms far from Budapest can be easily reached by rail, road or air from every direction.
