Koh Samui or Samui Island (in Thai language "Koh" means "Island") is in general considered as the second most beautiful tourism spot in Thailand. But those who want to enjoy the natural beauties with serene environment will be sceptic of this opinion. Koh Samui is simply the best place for them. Over the years it has attracted many foreigners, especially from Europe. It's interesting that many foreign travellers who came to Koh Samui just to pass vacation, couldn't avoid falling in love of its beauty. Eventually they settled there and this is reflected from a large number of foreign residents there.

When we first wrote about Koh Samui in the mid 1980s we predicted that the building of an airport on the island would forever change its character—and not for the better. Well Samui has its airport and though there have been some significant changes it’s still a very pleasant place to go. The only people likely to complain are those who spent time there when it was in its undeveloped state. Samui still has lovely clean beaches with magical blue-green colored water and an idyllic atmosphere—it’s just that there are now three to four times as many people enjoying it as before.

Koh Samui is at 295 mile or 475 km south of Bangkok, the capital of Thailand.

Secret Buddha Garden
Edit This

This place is worth a visit. The "Secret Buddha Garden" (some people call it "magic garden") was built in the hills of Samui in the last couple of years. It is told that only man did it. The only way to get there is through the jungle, rivers and mountains by a four-wheel-drive jeep. The journey takes about 2 hours starting at the back of the Lamai temple and is only recommended for experienced "outdoor" drivers. If you want to go the "easy" way book the trip with a travel agency on the island.

_________Getting There
Edit This
There are many ways to get to Koh Samui. The easiest but the costliest way is to fly. There are direct flights from Bangkok and Phuket to Koh Samui. The second way is to use a comfortable train journey. For this you will have to go to Hualumphong Railway Station.

To go to Hualumpong from Bangkok International Airport, you can take a taxi or can use Bus Number 29 or 39. The train journey finishes at Surat Thani. From Surat Thani you will have to go to the harbour to catch a ferry for a pleasant two-hour ride to the island.

Another way is to use an ecstatic 11-hour bus ride from Bangkok to Surat Thani. For this you will have to go to Southern Bus Station . From Hualumphong Bus number 7 goes to Southern Bus Station. At Surat Thani, you will have to go for a ferry for a two-hour ride to the island. It will worth to mention that you will forget all hassles in the journey once you are in the island.

________Day Trips
Edit This
I went to Thailand, but in relation to this section, Ko Samui with an Australian tour group. One of the day tours we did was a boat cruise in Ang Thong National Marine Park. You will stop off at 1 island, where you can have the opportunity to snorkel or kayak. Or you might also climb to where there is a great view of the water on this island- best to choose 2, and allow at least half an hour for the walk- maybe more.

We then boarded the boat and had pork, rice and vegetables for lunch with lovely watermelon.

Then on the 2nd island we went to, there was a sort of careful climb to another great sea view. It takes a bit of work to climb, but after 5-10 minutes you'll make it to the top. From here you can desend- not the way you came, to see some fish feeding off a reef. You'll also get a chance to see the emeral lake on the islands.

If you are looking for a great snorkelling experience you won't get this- as there was nothing to see on the day I went, but that was due to the fact that there had recently been storms, but even so.

Good fun, and fresh sea breezes, although in high season of tourism, the minute your boat leaves 1 island, about 30 secs later, another tourist boat will unload its passengers. That was a bit of a turn off, but the islands are clean and very scenic.

When it gets too hot out on the beach just find a hammock in the shade of a seaside grove of coconut palms and watch the fishing boats float by. Or rent a bicycle or motorcycle for touring (a paved road circles the island). Or follow one of the hiking paths that lead inland to waterfalls.

Look for the handsome Buddha attached to a temple at one end of the island. You can also dive among reefs off neighboring islands. If you visit on the weekend take the daylong cruise from the Na Thon pier to the Ang Thong National Marine Park. The park is a series of beautiful tropical isles with interesting rock formations and coral reefs.
