Full Moon Party Hat Rin Beach

Full Moon Party Hat Rin Beach

mauira

Koh Phangan is north of Koh Samui. It is being developed now, but it is still more relaxed than Koh Samui or Phuket. Best things to do include a snorkeling trip to Ang Thong National Marine Park a visit to Bottle Beach - lay on the beach or hike to the waterfall.

The media portrays Koh Phangan as purely a Full Moon party island but in actual fact there are numerous resorts and fantastic beaches away from Haad Rin on the South. For example moving North from the port of Thongsala along the West Coast are beaches such as Haad Yao and Haad Son that offer excellent entertainment and views. Mae Haad beach is simply stunning.

Moving south from Thongsala are beaches such as Baan Kai and Baan Tai with amazing views of Koh Samui in the near distance. When the lightening storms highlight the bigger island it is amazing. The Eastern side of the island is more remote and the roads to reach it are hard but upon reaching your final destination there are beauties to behold. For example Thong Nai Pan Noi has been listed as one the most beautiful beaches in Asia. Than Sadet has an amazing waterfall that was visited by a past King of Thailand and has his initials burned into the rocks.

One of the quieter spots on the island is Chalok Lam Bay in the north of the island about 15 minutes from the port of Thongsala and 30 minutes from the party town of Haad Rin. Many people choose to party hard in the south and then relax in the less developed north.

So whether you are partying hard or just chilling out Koh Phangan has much to offer all.

Chalok Lam Bay is a very natural picturesque location at the Northern most tip of Koh Phangan. The shoreline stretches for some 3 kilometres and the mountains frame the bay for its entirety. This was once a fishing village where industry dominated the seafront and activity until just a few years ago when the rows of drying squid were removed from the beaches to allow tourism to flourish. There are many Thai style restaurants and some new funkier bars in the village seafront with bungalows across the bay also offering food and drink.

There is an elephant trekking camp just south of the village near the Thai (Wat Pra Sanctum) and Chinese Temples. A diving school in the village offers pursuits for the aqua challenged and there are plenty of long tail boats for hire to tour the island or simply go fishing. A cooking school is also available just outside the village.

The bay in general is much more laid back than other parts of the island and traditionally people party in the south at the full moon party and then chill out in Chalok Lam. The villagers are very friendly and there is a fantastic vibe to the place.

The accommodation is plentiful and will suit most budgets with a range of different styles of bungalow from backpacker style to much more upmarket accommodation including a new hotel on the seafront in the village. Some examples are Fantasea Resort on the eastern end of the bay which offers fantastic Disney style A frames with first class facilities - the bungalows are directly on the beach. Wattana Resort at the west side of the bay which is very spacious, cheap and offers a very quiet location. In the centre of the bay are other places such as Chalok Lam Bay Resort and many others.

There is another Thai temple in the village and ceremonies are held each day at 7.30 am with all welcome. At Wat Pra Sanctum the head monk Pra Adjan speaks very good English and is very willing to include tourists within the meditation that he leads for the Monks.
