Kathmandu valley is overwhelming. It is surrounded by a tier of green mountain wall above which tower mighty snow-capped peaks. The valley consists of three main towns of great historic, artistic and cultural interest: Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur. It is situated 4,423 ft. above sea level.

In Kathmandu itself there are many sights and the countryside around it is stunning. Wherever you look, there’s always something of interest: a small ancient temple, a small statue, a sadhu in bright saffron robes meditating or a Tibetan monk spinning his prayer wheel.

The highest concentration of attractions is within the area of Durbar Square. Just off the square is Freak Street which is well past its prime but still has a bit of the flavor it had when it was a hangout for Western hippies during the ’60s and ’70s.

The neighborhood of Thamel is somewhat of a tourist ghetto but it offers a wide range of cuisines and souvenir shopping. A plethora of cheap hotels and guest houses provides a surprisingly wide range of services (international calls, faxes and massage shops among them).

Kathmandu Valley is dotted with countless shrines, temples, palace squares, charming old bazaars and ageless sculptures. Very much the abode of Lord Shiva and Guatama Buddha, a patron saint of the Sikhs has also walked here. Not to mention the Living Goddess, Kumari, who is venerated by all. So go out and explore this great city.

The holiest of all The Pashupathinath Temple where Pashu means living beings, and Pati means master. In other words Pashupati is the master of the all living beings of the universe. This is how Lord Pashupati is eulogized in the Vedas, Upanishad and other religious books.

The Shivalinga in the Temple is differrent one from the the rest we find in other shiva temples in the world. Here you can find shivalinga with four faces of Shiva himself. I have been told all these faces transalates into different names and different dharmas. The face facing to the east more..

_________Nighlife

Kathmandu has also a pulsating tourist center with a mind-blowingly hectic nightlife. But of of course the critical situation has taken its toll. The area around the Kathmandu Guest House has mutated into quite a throbbing little quarter in the evenings, with dueling nightclub sound systems blaring across the alleyways, noisy bands of revellers looking for action, and the cops and the rikshawallahs waiting outside for closing time.
