About 790,000 people inhabit this northern part of Russia. The republic is divided into 19 districts, including 13 towns, 12 settlements of urban type and 128 volosts (Provinces).

The capital of Karelia is Petrozavodsk. The total population of the city is about 290,000 people. It is the most important industrial city of the republic, an important scientific and cultural center. It is situated on the shore of the Petrozavodsk Bay of the Lake Onega, 925 km to the northwest of Moscow.

Petrozavodsk is the capital of Karelia. Petrozavodsk is located on the western coast of the Onega Lake. Even in prehistoric times the Karelian smiths were good at producing pig-iron, forge iron and steel. The beginning of Petrozavodsk was put by Peter the Great who in 1703 had ordered to construct steel mill and cannon factory named Petrovsky. A village that grew near the factory was named Petrovskaya Sloboda. In 1777 Petrovskaya Sloboda became the city Petrozavodsk. In the end of the 18th century the city become the largest metallurgical center of Russia. Alexandrovsky factory was the most technically equipped in Russia and produced cannons, art castings and steam machines.
